About Mail Posts

When choosing a mailbox post, durability is key since they typically stand exposed to weather and traffic near the side of a road. Beyond durability, there are a few other factors to consider including your preferred style, U.S. Postal Service guidelines and installation.

You can find steel, plastic, aluminum and even cedar mailbox posts. And while many are designed with clean lines other, more ornate, options exist. You may want to hold off on choosing the style until you determine how you would prefer installing your mailbox post.

Standard installation includes working with the U.S. Post Office to determine both the required height of your post-mounted mailbox and its curbside distance. Then, dig a hole with a post-hole digger and anchor the post in poured concrete.

In recent years, however, manufacturers have released other installation options. Today, you can purchase options with drive-in anchors requiring no digging or concrete.
