Not much derails a paint job like a spill on your floor, carpeting or furniture. And it’s been said the best paint jobs begin with thorough preparation. One important piece of prep to save you from cleaning up spills and ruining fabric is laying down drop cloths in the room you’ll be working.
Plastic drop cloths, also known as painter’s plastic, can be purchased in different weighted material. Lighter weight drop cloths can be draped over your furniture or used to cover doorways and windows, while heavier drop cloths work well on the floor or highly trafficked areas like carpeted stairways. If you’ll be painting several rooms, canvas drop cloths are a good option as they can be used over and over again.
Remember to secure your drop cloths with painter’s tape to avoid slipping. For suggestions on the other painting supplies you’ll need, check out our painting materials guide in our Paint Tips section.
