Keeping Up With The Latest Trends
Home is definitely where the heart is - a pride piece and
investment ... a reflection of oneself. But whatever the season, there's always work to be done around the house. The
do-it-yourself (DIY) industry has skyrocketed in recent years, as more and more people are tackling the work themselves
- and actually enjoying it!
Just 10 years ago, the home improvement marketplace was estimated to be a $135 billion industry. That number has now
grown to $185 billion.
Why the substantial increase? The answer is twofold: New home construction has boomed and with it has come a renewed
passion for DIY projects.
Who's doing the work? Research shows it's clearly not a man's domain any more. Move over handyman - here come the
handyma'ams! In fact, it's been estimated that women drive 75% of the home improvement purchasing decisions in a
household.
Regardless of how much the stock market or economy fluctuates - home improvement, especially in the DIY category, is
somewhat "recession proof." Things always will break in homes and need repair. And quick, inexpensive DIY projects can
not only fix the problem, but enhance the beauty of a home. Take painting, for example. You can easily give a room a
fresh look by applying a new coat of paint - a project that is not only simple, but also relatively inexpensive.
| Women drive home improvement: 70% say that the woman of the house assumes some (44%) or all (26%) of the
responsibility for making up and managing the household DIY "to do" list.* |
| Fewer than half of Americans feel that their storage areas are well organized. Two out of three (63%) expect to
reorganize storage areas in the next six months.* |
| Nearly three out of four people (72%) say they will research how to do it or ask for help when unsure about a
home project or repair.* |
