FALL WEBWORM
Description: There are two types of webworms, those with black heads and those with redheads. The black-headed ones are light yellow in color, while the red-headed ones are tan in color. Both are about an inch in length and have spiky hairs on their body.
Habitat: Fall webworms feed on a number of trees including pecan, elm and various fruit trees.
Damage, Symptoms: The most visible sign of damage to trees is the silken nests created by the webworms in the limbs of the trees. The nests are created to enclose the leaves they feed on.
Tree/Shrub: Spray with acephate, carbaryl, malathion or Bacillus thuringiensis when first webs appear; clip off and destroy infested branches or burn out webs.
FLEA
Description: Narrow-bodied, 1/16 inch long, dark brown, and spiny with well-developed jumping legs.
Habitat: Adults feed on the blood of man, cats, dogs and many other animals. Immature stages develop off the host in organic matter.
Damage, Symptoms: Bites aren't usually felt immediately, but become increasingly irritating for several days to a week.
Chemical: Replace flea collars on pets about every 3 months. Some pets are allergic. Dust pets directly as needed. Dust areas inside and outside the home where pets rest. For infestations in the home, spray edges of carpets and rugs and floors where fleas are observed. Follow label directions. Vacuum rugs and upholstered furniture thoroughly approximately 30 minutes after spraying.
Nonchemical: Frequently launder pet bedding and rugs where pets frequent with hot soapy water. Vacuum thoroughly to remove lint and dust around baseboards and cracks where flea eggs and larvae accumulate. Eliminate vegetation that will serve as a harborage for the native mammal population (carriers of fleas). Prevent pets from resting under the house and exclude mammals by screening attic and eave entrances. Thoroughly clean furniture in areas pets tend to frequent.
FLOUR BEETLE
Description: 1/8" long with brownish red bodies and short antennae close to the head.
Habitat: Commonly infest grain and flour products that are often found in kitchen cabinet areas.
Damage, Symptoms: Even if you can't see them in the food, they produce a foul odor and taste in the food they infest.
Chemical: Force spray (ready to use propoxur, chlorpyrifos or pyrethroid) into cracks and crevices; allow to dry; cover shelves with clean, fresh paper. Do not contaminate food or utensils with insecticides.
Nonchemical: Discard infested packages. Thoroughly clean and vacuum food cabinets and shelves. Keep dry food in tightly sealed containers. Keeping nonhuman food at 32° F for 3 to 4 days will kill eggs and larvae.
GRAIN BEETLE
Description: Slender, flat, brown bodies and very small (2-3 mm).
Habitat: Commonly infest grain and flour products that are often found in kitchen cabinet areas.
Damage, Symptoms: Both the adults and their larvae attack almost any dry food and infest it.
GREEN-STRIPED MAPLEWORM
Description: About 2" long with a red head and pale green body. Dark green or black stripes also run the length of the body.
Habitat: Lives off of trees such as oak or boxelder, but is especially fond of maple trees.
Damage, Symptoms: Feeds off of leaves which defoliates the tree.
Tree/Shrub: Spray foliage with acephate, carbaryl, malathion or Bacillus thuringiensis when feeding or worms are first noticed in spring.
