Does *not* shrink, but helps a lot

Comments about 3M® Outdoor Window Insulator Kit (2170 W-6):

i live in a rental property with replacement windows which don't work very well - several panes have lost their insulative value (moisture leaked between the panes) and the weatherstripping on the windows is worn or missing in places. I can't do anything which puts holes in the moldings or siding, so can only use adhesive-film mounts for storm windows. Last year I used the internal film to reduce drafts; it worked, but the windows still were cold, since leaky windows allowed outside air at the inside film. This year i'm using the outside film as well.

i was disappointed to find that the film is *not* shrink film. They tell you to stretch it to remove wrinkles - this is virtually impossible on large windows - at least with only one person doing the installation. When it's wrinkled and loose, it still stops drafts, but doesn't produce a reliable insulative air barrier. That said, it's still clear - wrinkles and all - and you can see through it, which is not the case with most heavier films (I used the leftover tape and a heavier translucent film on a couple of windows).

I put it up before putting on the indoor film. If your windows leak, as mine do, then moisture-laden air will leak out from inside, and you still get condensation and frost on the film, which both impairs its clarity and reduces the effectiveness of the air barrier (moist air conducts heat much better than dry air) - but it shows it's working! I could feel the difference immediately; I expect that the exterior film plus the interior film will cut my heating bills 30-40% this year.

Put it up on a quiet day; the film is lightweight and blows around. Best results require two people; after attaching the top, pull from both sides and work down together. As with all adhesives, the surface must be clean - I wash it, dry it, then wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. If you've waited too late to put it up (the tape requires 50°F temps), I've read that you can use a heat gun - after cleaning but before applying the tape, and after pressing the film onto the tape - to bring the temperatures up to where the tape will bond properly. I'll try that on the windows which are not done yet.

Comments about 3M® Outdoor Window Insulator Kit (2170 W-6):

The temperature must be 50 degrees F or above for the tape to work as designed. Also having a clean and smooth surface for the tape to adhere to is a must; no gritty surfaces like grout or brick. Alternatively, and cheaper is to use 'rope caulk'. I use both. On my windows, the rope caulk blocks the air leakage and the film creates a void between the window and outside air. Eventually I plan to get new windows, but until then this seems to do a decent job. -- A few of my windows do not have this film because the distance between the molding and the pane is too small, the film ends up resting against the pane making it ineffective. If two people apply the film carefully, it would be possible to make the film taut enough to create a good void even for these difficult windows. Instead I just use the indoor window film on these windows.

Comments about 3M® Outdoor Window Insulator Kit (2170 W-6):

In TC's review he criticizes it for not shrinking when a blow dryer is used on it. The package directions clearly state that that does not work on this outdoor product. (It does work on their indoor products.)

Comments about 3M® Outdoor Window Insulator Kit (2170 W-6):

The advertising for this "Outdoor Window Plastic" says you can shrink it with a blow dryer. The truth is, it doesn't and when you put it up that's it.
