I used the Scott's system for years but it just stopped working for me. A 30 yr old lawn, 3/4 of a acre essentially died mostly weeds. Top soil is essentially all washed away. So this is what you do if you 'got nothing left'. I decided to separate the killing of weeds from fertilizing process. And I have a pull along thatcher so I thatched it to get the junk out of the lawn. Mowed it low and sucked it all up. This is what I did: And it worked beautiful!
1. 1st step (4/10): used a large spray tank pulling with my John Deere and sprayed 'Weed B Gone with Crabgrass killer' following instructions.
2. 2nd Step (2 wks later 4/24): sprayed 'Weed B Gone'again. Want all weeds out of the lawn. More than 50% looked like dirt. It looked like I was going to have to spend thousands to plant a new lawn and hire professional help.
3. 3rd Step (1 wk later 5/1) I applied this product 'Ace Lawn Fertilizer' following instructions.
4. 4th Step (1 wk later 5/8) I Aerated the lawn with a plug type. Very important especially if your lawn is old. And I put 10 bags of Granular Lime on the lawn.
5. 5th Step (1 wk later 5/15) I put 'Ace Starter Fertilizer' on the whole lawn. It took 3 1/2 bags.
COMPLETE SUCCESS! The lawn filled in. The bald dirt areas grew new baby grass. I did not cut the lawn all that time. It was very high. Every blade of grass grew seeds. I wanted the seeds to ripen a bit more. So I put the deck all the way up not even on a number and quick cut real high maybe 5". I did not lower the deck at all. Waited 3 week and cut it at 3 1/2 inches. (I always cut at 3 1/2" all season), I did not collect the grass clippings, I was seeding the lawn with this, I wanted these seeds to seed the lawn. Seeds are expensive and I wanted every seed to count. Everything filled in completely except a very few small areas, very little planting needed. I might wait and see if the seeds take more before doing anything at all. I will now apply the MAX 'Bug B Gone' I find that keeping chemicals and applications separate they work better. I could never understand how you can weed the the lawn and feed the lawn at the same time. One is an acid and one is an alkaline, they neutralize each other, don't they? Well that might work for a while but at some point when lawns get older it might stop working. Its like living on fast food. Its OK when you're young but when you get older, things change.

Never apply any fertilizer at high sun ! It is best to apply after 5pm and water in evening. The grass will start to look greener in a few days.

The only thing this fertilizer does is make the grass itself grow with no root growth. Weed killers do that because it the weeds by choking the plant. Not sure why you would want this fertilizer because it will not be good for the grass. Might look good but without root growth you are asking for trouble.
