This is a pretty decent light duty pruner / saw. It seems ideally suited for the suburban dweller with a few trees that need occasional trimming / pruning. The shaft and saw blade are fairly flexible, which makes it difficult to cut through large branches, but it is certainly possible with some perseverance. The pruner works well on very small branches, but I would certainly not expect the rope to survive very long (it is very flexible) - however it does not look like it is very difficult to replace the rope with something a bit heavier duty in the same gauge.
The tool was setup to use the pruner right out of the package - just unwind the cord and pull. The saw attaches with a single thumb screw and a pin that's riveted in place. It doesn't get much easier to use than this, although it does get fatiguing after a lot of use - no matter how light the whole mechanism is, supporting something that extends out 12 feet takes a decent bit of effort. If you need something to cut more than a few branches - especially if many of them are thick, it definitely seems like a powered unit makes more sense.

This is a pretty flimsy pruner. When telescoped, the pole bends and the rope stretches when you try to close the jaws. Unless you have 6’ arms, you’ll have to figure out a way to get a second grip on the rope, without losing the position of the first pull. (NOT and easy thing to do) The saw blade has ‘odd’ holes that most replacement blades don’t have. The ACE replacement blade costs $17.49 (9/08). This is a very light duty, occasional use tool. Expect more and you will be disappointed.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
With the pole fully extended, there was to much flex in the pole as well as the saw blade. Blade would often come out of the cut that was started. Also, blade seemed to stick often.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
Flawed and cheap metallurgy; the blade snapped on about the 20th cut and left me stranded mid-project. I was not cutting substantial branches at that. There was an obvious metal flaw seen in the break. On the bright side, it's still usable with the saw feature, or I could re-purpose the extension pole to wash windows or something.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
I bought this to trim small branches in an oak tree. The lopping blade worked fine; pulling hard on the rope made the pole bend, but it cut the branch off without breaking the pole or rope. For larger branches I needed the saw blade, but the attachment holes in it were so much larger than the peg and the bolt that it had an inch or more of free play at the end of it. So when I pushed, it bent one way and came of out the cut, and when I pulled, it bent the other way and came out. It was very hard to cut with it. I plan to attach it permanently with epoxy so it will be rigid. For others I suggest buying a different pruner.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
I have bushes in front of my house that have grown over the years into sturdy trees covering the front of the house and extending over the gutter line. I called a few landscapers but none ever showed up. After waiting all day a few weeks ago for a local landscaper who promised he'd be buy, I went to my local Ace for this tool. I'd never used a tool like this before, but found it easy to figure out right away. I trimmed several of the trees down to bush size again. I am delighted with the tool! The saw part is great for sawing right through the trunk, while I use the cutting blades for smaller branches. Thanks to Ace, I don't have to wonder if a landscaper will show up or not, I can do it myself. Here's my project halfway done.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
Rope broke in about an hour. It is a small nylon rope inside a sheath of nylon. Terrible. Needs a woven wire setup. Only cuts very small branches and the saw blade is only good on large sturdy branches. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. I will know better next type to closely inspect the trimmer before purchasing.

Lopper blade broke the first day I used this. My problem is that there is no replacement blade for the lopper. I would have to buy another tool if I needed that function.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
Replacement inevitable, since repair parts, replacement blades not withstanding, are apparently unavailable and creative "blacksmithing" on my part was necessary to extend the Ace® Tree Pruner's useful lifetime. Also I had to remember to retighten moving parts often during heavy usage or risk losing some in the underbrush, which I finally did. Parachute shroud line also was a good replacement for the snapped ropes and a beefed up locknut backup on the blade prevented its tendency to loosen frequently, in hard-to-get-to places

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
I got about 8 hours of work out of this pole trimmer when the rope snapped at one of the pulleys because the cheap pulley had deteriorated and cut the rope. Impossible to fix so I have to buy another trimmer but not this one.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Tree Pruner:
I checked around looking for a good tree pruner that would not cost a lot but had the features and quality construction I wanted. After checking on-line and looking at other pruners at other hardware stores I settled on this one at Ace Harware. It price was in the range I wanted to spend and it looked like it was well put together.
When I got it home I found it easy to use right out of the pack and went to work trimming the high branches I couldn't reach before. The pruner, surprisingly, cuts surprisingly through thick branches with ease and the extension mechanism seems to lock into place well with not slippage.
This was definitely a good purchase has already paid for itself when you consider how much a gardner charges for prunning and clean-up.
