I split about a cord before the head flew off. The 6lb maul works great until it falls apart. Now I have more junk to haul off to the dump, do not by this maul.

Terrible design. The handle assembly began to crack next to the head within 20 strokes. I am a fairly skilled user of these types of tools and this was by far the worst substitute to a traditional hickory handle that I have ever used.

One positive note, the cast steel head was robust! It held its good sharp edge until the end.

This tool lasted me a solid 3 weeks before the head assembly broke. I am trying to find a wooden handle to fit the head.

                      Comments about Collins® 6lb Splitting Maul (TJ-6FD-C):

The 8 pound Collins splitting maul did not last one year of light use. The handle cracked about 3/4 through at the letter "E" in AXE on the handle. Wouldn't take another one if it was free. Made in Mexico. The handle is plastic not fiberglass as advertised. From the other reviews this is a common problem. I am going to recommend that Ace Hardware not sell this product as it is a piece of junk.

The head flew off this maul on the second tree I used it with no warning. The exact same problem as everyone else. I should have checked the reviews before I bought this at the local ace hardware. The last maul I had was my grandfathers and its still up to the task...

Bought this maul expecting it to last for years. Broke on the second outting. Head came off. Handle only extends 1" into the head. No way that will hold up to the abuse a maul gets. Never wore the sticker off the head. Never used a wedge. Buyer beware.

This maul was bought to replace a very old and very heavy maul. The new fiberlass maul broke before a full cord of oak had been split.
The sturdy appearing handle is merely butted against the 6lb. maul head and connected with a fiberglass/plastic dowel. All of the energy is absorbed by this dowel of approximately 1". The design gives the false appearance that the entire size of the handle goes through the maul head just as the traditional wood handle does. This gave no warning when it separated.
