Look its a plan old fashion splitter, that's what it was designed to be and that's what it is. I bought this item about a week ago to split wood and it work (grandpa had a nearly identical one that went through at minimum 4 handles in 40+ years, I think my aunt has it now), I just finished splitting about a cord or so... on seeing how I did it my girlfriend decided she wanted to try it, she got through maybe 1/8 of a cord with little trouble once she had the basic technique down! As for the handle yes it is wood and therefore it will break eventually, but the same basic rules apply here as do any wood handle (make sure it's in good condition, don't leave it outside, and the grand goes down the handle).

I bought this maul and split maybe 6 logs before the handle broke. I have split tons of wood and never broken a handle with other mauls. Ace took it on return and oredered another but seeing that someone else had the same problem. I will probably look for another brand.

I bought maul and split maybe a rick of wood with it until the handle broke...I did not hit handle on wood. But with the helpful people at ace my maul was exchanged.

I really like the feel of the wood handle but it will eventually break.replace it with a 3'by 1" steel pipe. have it welded on. these things work great, but the 8lbs version dose split a little bit easier.I heat my home with wood and use it a lot.
