This wonderful KitchenAid® attachment has changed the way we view ground meat products. From the very first time I purchased an inexpensive roast, asked the butcher for a half pound of beef fat, went home and ground our own home made ground beef, we decided we would never buy store or factory ground beef again. There is no comparison. After the "pink sludge" scare a few years ago, everyone wants better ground meat products and this simple device makes it not only possible but easy and affordable.

I also grind pork butt and make our own sausage patties by simply adding a bit of sage and you can too. I also grind the beef, pork and veal to make the best meatballs ever.

If you have ever considered this attachment, quit thinking and go get it. You will be so glad you did.

Thanks, Mark from Sacramento, CA

I came here to report large cracking in the FGA and assumed since Kitchenaid stands for quality that it would be covered by a warranty. At a retail price of over $60 this shouldn't break so easily. It's a few years old however it has been used how many times?? maybe 7 ??

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I purchased 4 pounds of chuck steak to make hamburger. I cut out the gristle and saved a bit of fat. The grinder worked just great. I just had so much waste ending up with 2 pounds of meat.

Cracked and Shattered Housing

By Darren

from Marin County, CA

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

As others have described, I used the unit only a few times before noticing hairline cracks in the housing. The hairline cracks then opened up over time and created even larger cracks. While making cranberry chutney for Thanksgiving today, the housing completely shattered and dropped pieces of the grinder housing all over me and the food. This occurred at only the first speed setting grinding cranberries and oranges. I would say the unit has been used approximately five times. I love Kitchenaid but this unit is a safety concern. Prior to the failure, the unit worked well. My only design complaint is that the two dyes are extremely fine and extremely course, something in the middle would be a welcome addition.

Very good value for the price.

By John the Cook

from Crossville, TN

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I use this attachment all the time. I make my own dog food, and often the cheapest meat is pork butt. For two years, I ground it using this attachment. Was it as fast as a commercial grinder? Certainly not. However the attachment only costs me a bit over $50, and a commercial grinder would be many hundreds of dollars. Furthermore, it would take up a lot of storage space. AND, the cleanup is so easy compared to that of dedicated machines.

Two years, using it for a pound of meat per day (usually in 20 pound batches) and the only thing I had to do was sharpen the little cutting blade windmill on a stone (once) when it seemed to be jamming a bit.

This is a plastic attachment, so, you know, it's not meant for heavy duty. However, I've been very happy with it. I've saved about a dollar a pound by grinding my own meat, and that adds up to almost $800 just in the last few years. Furthermore, the homemade Italian sausage I made (Emeril's recipe) from the same cheap pork butt was outstanding!

Cracks make it unusable.

By Joyce L

from Brookfield, IL

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I have used this grinder maybe 5 or 6 times, and only for grinding sirloin to make fresh burger, to avoid the widespread contamination they have found in ground meats everywhere. Now I notice cracks in the plastic, near where the metal post goes into the mixer hub. This will harbor bacteria, making it unusable for grinding clean ground meat. There is a design flaw here...if only in the choice to make it of plastic! Expensive garbage. If I still had my receipt, I would return it.

meat grinding

By Frustrated

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I bought this grinder about 10 years ago. It has a grey in color supposedly food safe grease in the works somewhere. It colors everything. Ever had grey parmesan cheese? I swear it changed the taste also. When I contacted Kitchen aid about this problem they declined to do anything other than telling me it was safe to eat. It also gets clogged easily. What a waste of money!

great for arthritic cooks

By gary

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I like to make foods like sausage cheese balls but mixing and grating ingredients is painful with arthritic hands. The grinder attachment ground and grated the moist ingredients easily. Using the dough hook made mixing and kneading the dry ingredients with the moist. This was the first time I made sausage cheese ball without having to pause because of the arthritis in my hands. I've also found that the whisk makes Quinoa Bisquik very easy.

Dissapointed

By johnzee123

from Atl, GA

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I've used this attachment for grinding chuck, only. I've had it for about 6 months and have ground about 15 pounds of beef. With the first use, there has been a black viscous substance that comes out with/on the meat. I think it is lubricant from inside the shaft of the feeder screw. I end up have to pick threw the ground beef and remove what I can. This is kind of gross.
I can only hope it is a food grade lubricant.

Not Dishwasher Safe!

By Mike

from Bozeman, MT

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

Received this as a gift and used it grind venison, elk, and bacon with the coarse plate on our first use. Did a pretty good job, only had some leaking from the screw on guard that secures the grinding plate and cutting knife.

Following the manual, we washed the hopper as well as the screw shaft in the dishwasher. The attachment point where the grinder and stand mixer meet has now discolored to a dark gray and has residue that comes off when it is touched. The end of the screw shaft where the cutting blade mounts is also showing signs of rust. I would not expect for such things to occur with dishwasher safe components!

Very disappointed and not sure where to go from this point. Liked using the grinder, but I am very concerned with how it could further contaminate food in the future. Hoping that Kitchenaid is willing to stand by their product so we're not stuck with something that can't be used. Will be reading the user reviews prior to purchasing any other attachments!

Waste of Money

By HK

from Virgina

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I bought the meat grinder attachment about a year ago for processing deer meat during the hunting season. What a pain in the behind and waste of money!! I read several of the reviews on this site and saw that other consumers are having issues with the grinder clogging up, fat and tendon wrapping up around the worm gear. Heat generated from the friction of the blades and worm gear against the meat results in gray looking meat coming out. I have tried different motor speeds as well as cutting meat into one inch square pieces. Nothing seemed to improve the performance. A pound of meat takes about 6-7 minutes to grind that's if the meat is very lean. Other wise it can take up to 15 minutes if I don't have to pull the grinder apart and clean it. Wish I could return the grinder kit for ap refund or manufacture credit towards another accessory. I stuck the grinder in the cabinet never to be used again. Will probably donate it to Goodwill. As for the sound level the grinder is quite but the mixer is loud. I take that with a grain of salt.
I love the Kitchen Aid mixer and the vegetable slicer and grater accessory kit that we have!!

Fantastic! (Tip, Meat must be chilled!)

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

Fantastic attachment, highly recommend it. Make own burgers, chili, meatballs etc.
Use chuck, sirloin and even ribeye (though not necessary).
Tip is to have meat cut into 1" cubes and must be chilled!
I put about 30 min in freezer (not frozen though) and leave cubes on stainless bowl on top of ice.
Awesome (and healthier too!)

Not a meat grinder!!

By Hibiscus47

from Myrtle Beach

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

This was a birthday gift. The only purpose was to grind my own meats. All it does is mash meat and stop after a minute because of the build up of fat, muscle and grizzle. Have to take it apart to pry off glop just to have to do it again and again. Tried with beef and then pork with same results. There are grey pieces of meat dispersed among ground meat Very disappointed with this, even though have 2 mixers that are are by far the best I have used. One mixer was my mom's dating back from 1958 and still runs like a top and my newest is 20 years old in excellent condition.

Works . . . but

By Woodrat

from Poway, CA

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I like grinding my own meat for chili and sausage, but now I'm concerned. Blood spatters everywhere, but I can adjust for that. I can second every complaint - grease and black bits in the food (I just picked them out but hadn't thought about heavy metals!); grey dust on the metal parts after washing it in the dishwasher; sinew wrapping around the spindle; and I can add another - the plastic housing is cracking at the bottom where it attaches to the mixer. I always think of the mixer as the top of the line, but the attachments and accessories leave me tepid.

Would be a fine grinder if not for the metal particles

By Jordan

from Michigan

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

The grinder gets the job done, which is all you can ask of an appliance. However, there is a design flaw in which metal particles from the inside of the machine get siphoned in via the corkscrew action. This makes the product unusable due to the health risk of consuming heavy metals. When grinding an unseasoned meat such as ground beef, you can clearly see the metal deposits as you grind. It's a shame, because this is an otherwise adequate tool.

Leaks grease into you food

By Julie

from Michigan

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I LOVE my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. I use it all the time for baking and cooking. For that purpose it works great. However, I have purchased the meat/food grinder attachement. My intention was to make homemade ground beef pattys for burgers. The machine will not grind the steak or roast to burger. It gets clogged right away. Even worse that the few bits of ground burger that make it out are coated in black greese from the axle. This machine is not cut out for use as a food grinder. I'm very unhappy with this aspect. More so disappointed. Much of my reason to invest in Kitchen Aid was because of the various accessories compatable with the machine.

Does the job as long as it lasts

By MedicCook

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

This is the second FGA I've had in the last 15 years..first one was used maybe 10 times in 5 years or so and then the housing split apart. Tossed it and then bought a new one, have had it for about a year now and it gets used maybe twice a month and where the set screw for where it attaches to the mixer has basically drilled out. Now the set screw is biting into the drive shaft. Trying to decide if I want to buy another one of these or buy a completely separate one..

not dishwasher-safe!

By HS

from Austria

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

The meat grinder works fine, if you're only using it once in a while and for small quantities of meat - for larger chunks of meat it simply lacks power and stability, also a good deal of meat will get stuck in the ring and wrapped around the blade.
Apart from that, I find the casing material to be a major flaw.
Since it is processising raw meat, all parts of the grinder should be dishwasher safe, yet the grinder body includes aluminium parts (the end you connect to the stand mixer), that will corrode when exposed to salt in your dishwasher.
The manual explicitly declares the body dishwasher-safe, yet after washing it in the dishwasher, you will have to clean your fingers and everything else that has come into contact with the alumium of the grinder, for grey corrosive dust will rub off of the metal on touch.
The same goes for the whisk of the stand-mixer: Come on Kitchen-aid! Your stuff comes at a steep price-tag, why don't you manage to produce a whisk made of stainless steel or coated aluminum, making it dishwasher -safe? Is a pain in an explicitely implicit body part to be forced to clean the whisk with all its little wires by hand, this is design flaw other manufacturers like Kenwood don't bother their customers with - please fix this!

Poor quality

By Kari

from Los Angeles, ca

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I received this about 10 years ago as a wedding gift. I was looking forward to grinding my own meat at home without purchasing a whole other appliance to do so. Well I only used it a a dozen of times, if that, over the past decade the housing cracked. It's made of thin plastic which just can't hold up to the stresses of grinding meat. Overall it was easy to use and clean, just disappointed in the quality.

Black meat and sludge

By AG

from Houston, Texas

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I bought the meat grinder along with the shredder and the citrus juicer probably about a year and a half ago and am just now getting around to trying out the meat grinder. I'm very frustrated that I spent so much money on it because after about a minute of grinding, black pieces of meat starting coming out. I took it apart to find that a meat had compacted at the back of the grinder and had turned black. I cleaned all of the pieces and used paper towels to dry it and wipe off the black inside the tube at the back of the housing where the end of grinding worm feeds through to fit into the mixer. After doing some research on the internet, I found that many people were having the same issue. Some had different strategies to deal with it, including using cooking oil to lubricate. Others are just assuming it's food safe machine oil. I tried lubricating with mineral oil and the same thing happened. I cleaned everything again and had my husband lubricate it, since he's far more familiar with mechanical things than I am. I thought maybe I was putting it in the wrong place. I tried to grind some more meat. That's when I got the black ooze coming out around where the blade and plate connect. I took it apart and found that there was black liquid at the back of the housing and inside the tube again. I've had this black liquid when I juice, but I thought it was from juice going back into the mixer housing. Juicing is messy and the juice goes everywhere. Now I'm concerned that it's getting into my juice before I notice that it's there. I'll also be checking my shredder. I haven't noticed any black cheese, but certainly don't want to be ingesting this.

Comments about KitchenAid® Meat Grinder Stand Mixer Attachment (Fga):

I was hesitant to buy this based on the reviews I read but I'm glad it was the only one available. I attached my grinder to the kitchen aide and lo and behold got exactly what I'd read...meat squishing out all over the place. It just didn't make sense to me so I took the time to look at the pamphlet and realized the attachment has both grinding attachments attached and screwed on when you take it out of the box. Hmmmm...so I unscrewed the connection and took out one of the two grinding plates; reattached it and it works like a charm. Already ground fresh burger and marinated pork to make egg rolls. Recommend you put a note in there to check and remove one of the grinder plates!
