Comments about PROTECH Yard Butler 18in Roto Auger (REA-4):

As with all tools, works better w/experience and under specific conditions. Thus I got much better at using this tool even as it started to wear.

My application is boring 8"-12" holes for fertilizing trees around the yard (I have 32 @5-7 holes/tree) And the soil (if I can call it that) is rocky clay-like (the worst, which is also why I need to fertilize).

The auger shaft is straight and round, probably keeping it cheap and easy to manufacture. I found that filing three flat areas on the end helps to keep it from slipping/turning in my drill chuck. This was probably optional, especially after I learned how to better use the auger (read below).

For my soil conditions the most important thing I found was to ONLY use this tool after the ground is soft from a good soaking, it is literally 10X more effective then. At first I tried boring holes in the dry ground which took me 20 fustrating minutes to fertilize just one tree. The auger simply wouldn't bore easily and the slightest rock ground my progress to a halt. Then I read where someone suggested water, so I poured water into the hole as I augered, this helped a little but rocks were still a problem and it got a little muddy/messy. I was almost ready to give up on the auger but since it rained slow and steady all the next day anyway, I gave it a rest.

2-days later I decided to try again, this time to my surprise, boring was so easy that it took me only 2-minutes to do each tree! Rocks and roots no longer posed a problem, boring in moist/soft ground was now like a hot knife through butter, when compared to before. It was also a lot less messier than the mud I made from directly adding water.

The auger tip is pretty worn after about my first 160+ holes and the spiral flights are starting to wear as well. But bearing the lesson in mind about augering only in soft moist soil conditions I estimate another 2 years before I have to replace it. That's not bad considering the service it's put to, which is to repeatedly bore through rocky clay soil.

I actually give it 3.5 stars.

Comments about PROTECH Yard Butler 18in Roto Auger (REA-4):

I've been looking for an auger to drill holes in my garden/yard for over a year. I use it to make (up to) a 12 inch deep hole. Just the right size to install an 8 foot garden stake. It works GREAT.
