    CATASTROPHIC FAILURE

Comments about CONTROLLED ENERY CORP Ariston® Electric Mini Tank Water Heater (GL2.5):

For the first two years of the 4 years of use, I had to clean the screens of faucet and showers at least once a month. A black sand-like to small berry-size substance kept clogging the screens. Yesterday, the tank itself experienced a catastrophic failure. It literally burst and was spewing water out all sides but primarily out the back openings. Thankfully, unlike the Red Face Manager's experience, I installed the tank in the crawlspace where little damage to property occured.

Comments about CONTROLLED ENERY CORP Ariston® Electric Mini Tank Water Heater (GL2.5):

We have had our unit for three years. It has worked well in that time however we came to work one day this week to a flood. The unit had a catastrophic structural failure that resulted in hundreds (maybe thousands) of gallons of water spilled in the second floor bathroom that leaked down to a first floor equipment storage room. FUN WOW!

This was not a pressure relief valve release. The tank blew apart inside.

The cost of the unit is inconsequential relative to the damage it can cause if it fails. The unit is rated for 150 psi. Our water is about 130 psi in this location. For the replacement we are regulating it back to 50 psi and locating it so as to have minimal fallout if failure occurs again.

I understand that catastrophic failure is a risk with any hot water appliance. However with the three year lifespan (about half the six year warranty); and the severity of the failure; and the fact that the unit was operated within it's design specifications, are reasons to give pause. Maybe hot water tanks should be in the basement near a drain. If you want instant hot water, a circulator with a thermostatic crossover valve might be a better way to go.

Comments about CONTROLLED ENERY CORP Ariston® Electric Mini Tank Water Heater (GL2.5):

Simple installation (although I have taken a risk and did not connect the pressure relief valve to drain yet), as one other reviewer said, an hours work and two flexible faucet hoses was all it took. I installed this in my kitchen which has high hot water use. My hot water heater is way at the other of the house and it used to take about a minute (more in winter) of running water to drain before we got any hot water. Now it is instant. I added a tee in the hot water outlet of the unit to supply my dishwasher. I agree with other reviewer that setting thermostat would be slightly troublesome but why bother? The factory setting seems to be just about perfect.

Comments about CONTROLLED ENERY CORP Ariston® Electric Mini Tank Water Heater (GL2.5):

Great concept - poor execution. To change thermostat setting, you have to remove 3 screws and three plastic covers. There are no calibration marks on the thermostat. Trial an error method to find the proper temperature. The rating of the heating element is misleading. Mine draws 9A @ 120 V - less than 30% of the nameplate rating. However, even at 1100 Watts, the heater worked well.

Comments about CONTROLLED ENERY CORP Ariston® Electric Mini Tank Water Heater (GL2.5):

As a retiree the family is very cost aware. We have these little tanks at every sink, kitchen & bath room. They work great and supply enough for dishes and toothbrushing. They are very inexpensive to operate.
It took 1 hour and 2 water supply lines to install under the sink. An additional 45 minutes took to wire in an outlet under the sink to supply the HWH. Works fine on 15 amp circuit.
