I use this grate in my small fireplace at home and LOVE it! It is great at getting a fire going and keeping it going. I have another grate that has large spaces and couldn't get a fire to keep going with that one. Yes, you have to push the ash through, but the fact that this grate seems to keep a fire going longer and hotter far outweighs that itty bitty downside in my opinion!

Comments about Vestal Cast Iron Grate (J18):
This is the best grate that I have found for my small manufactured fireplace. It's great that free shipping is offered to my local Ace Hardware store. It is far superior to the grate that came with my original fireplace. I have been using the Vestal Mfg J-18 grate for several years & they really do a great job & it is really tough & long lasting. I don't think there is a better product on the market.

Comments about Vestal Cast Iron Grate (J18):
It's hard to find a grate with shorter legs, that hover over the gas flames just right, plus I have a smaller fireplace. This grate is perfect, and the price is half of what the "fireplace" stores charge for grates. I love the option of buying online, having the item shipped to the store for pickup with NO shipping charge! And less time than having it shipped to my house!

Comments about Vestal Cast Iron Grate (J18):
This grating is heavy duty, great quality. We have purchased several gratings in the past and none would hold up to high heat very long, they pretty much melted down. Give me about a year of use and then I will be glad to comment further and/or increase the rating status on this particular grating. The pricing was reasonable as well.

I have a 1980's heatilator fireplace in my townhouse. The big box stores do not have a good grate. I ordered the grate from my local Ace on a monday and the grate was in by friday morning. The grate that this replaced was half the weight and had a 6 inch hole in the center. I burn only hardwood, and a little hard coal. I have built 2 "HOT" fires, Hot enough to make the entire grate GLOW, no problems no deforming.
