Pay $100+ for a utility pump that requires electricity (something that makes me nervous when dealing with standing pools of water) that needs regular maintenance, can't handle dirty water, and will probably break anyway OR just get this. It really does work like a charm. I imagine more hardware stores don't keep this in stock because its too simple and they'd probably rather sell you an electric pump every two to three years. The pump is powered by fundamental laws of physics that will quickly remove water. It doesn't care how dirty the water is or how much trash you ask it to consume since there are no moving parts. It's a cheap, powerful pump that you can leave in your basement for years and pull it out whenever needed. Just don't expect to find it in stock in your local hardware store.

My water softner salt container ~25 gallon size container had a fine dirt/algea build up. I wanted to clean it out, but could not scoop it becuase it was too fine. This was the cheepest solution so I tried it. My water supply hose outlet was close by so I had a good pressure on my hose and it really worked. It pumped water almost three feet vertical with the included pipe. I was shocked with how good this thing works!!
The extension pipe it comes with is convienient for storage, but seems a bit flimsy. Definatly not a leave out in the sun type of thing. But it works GREAT!! (if you have decent hose pressure)
The directions mention a 1" PVC extension tube no longer then 4` I want to try it now just to see if it will work. You know a tool that is good enough to play with is good enough to own...
