I really need to use a hand spreader for a variety of applications. I otherwise use a Scotts drop spreader. I've been using this little hand spreader for the last several years to lay seed, ice melter, fertilizer, and most recently some pelletized lime. The little orange crank handle broke about a year ago, but I managed to glue it back on sufficiently to work for a while. The pelletized lime was more difficult to spread and the handle came off again. Wish I could get a replacement crank handle, as the spreader is still needed. It works well when it works.

I work in the extermination industry. Have been for 15+ years. Scotts spreaders used to be made with MUCH better quality. I purchased 6 of these after i left mine at a job site by accident. Worst mistake I every made. All 6 of these spreaders jammed immediately at first day! Usually by 2nd or 3rd use. I returned 4 back to the store of purchase and voiced my concerns (went in one ear and was never addressed. That was last year that it happened. Bought another just to see if problem was corrected 3 mths ago. Still jammed@first use. This is the problem that I found...poor design with any weight in the spreader. Grass seed-works great! Fertilizer-if it is a heavy grain...forget it! We use a granular pesticide that is the same grain as sand(very fine but is heavy like sand) I figured out anything over 3/4 of a lb. jammed it up. The older spreader that was held together with screws was the best spreaderwe ever used. Mine lasted for 3yrs under heavy use. Replacing one like that...more worth the $12-$16 price tag. Replacing one that last 5 days? Really?

The ergonomic "wrap around" handle design of this spreader makes it much less fatiguing to use than other competitive brands. It is easy to see where the seed is being spread. I use mine for spreading seed for deer food plots- everything from soybeans to clover is easy to spread with this product.

I thought buy this product would be easy to use but it wasn't. It would not spread evenly and kept getting stuck. Every time I used it my grass would have diss colored patched days later. I would waste my money. I would spend a little more money on the walk behind one before buying this product.

This hand held spreader is a must for anyone that wants to have a good lawn you pin point ever spot that you want to attack with any product that that you choose to use I use it for spot fertilizing, for crabgrass spots in early spring it is the only way to seed a lawn, and in the summer months when you get the brown spots then I fill it up with Scotts fungus Control. If you check your PH in your soil and you just need to adjust a small part than this is the tool

After about going through half of the hopper it becomes very hard to crank. Wish I still had my receipt to return to Home Depot. I would be embarrassed to have this in my product line. Better not to sell anything than to sell junk. Should have read the reviews first. I am will to pay more money for a product that works than to waste my time buying a product, taking it home and finding out it doesn't work as advertised.

I bought this due to the Scott's name and quality that they are suppose to have. I put some seed in this thing and made two turn and it doesn't work. If I empty the unit it works sometimes. Need to start using metal gears again and get rid of the plastic. I will not tell anyone to buy this product.

I bought this for spreading fertilizer around our lawn. I saw this same product at multiple lawn & garden/home improvement stores so I though it must be a good product. I was wrong. I don’t know if it is the dust from the fertilizer or if small pellets of fertilizer get stuck in the gears but after spreading about half of what the unit can hold it is almost impossible to turn the crank. The only way I can get the crank turning again is if I spay it out with water and put some water in the holding area and turn the crank until it loosens up. It works fine for about another half and then I have to do the same thing all over again. I also let my neighbor give it a try and the same thing happened to him. But when he tried turning it after it started to lock up his hand slipped and he cut a gash in his thumb. Not worth the time. Not worth the effort. Don’t buy this.

My spreader was 2 years old, and I use it yearly to apply products to less than 750 sq ft. of lawn. It first started acting up last fall when the agitator fell off. Today, it froze up and the handle broke off. I went to the store today to buy a replacement and found several on the shelf that would not turn freely without any product in them. Something is wrong with the design or quality control with the spreader. My old red Ortho hand held spreader that this one replaced, lasted me 30 years before it broke.

The first Scotts® HandyGreen® II Hand-Held Spreader stripped its gears. Threw it away. Thought it was just bad luck and bought another one. The second one is junk as well. Jams, is hard to turn crank and just freezes up. This was on the first 10 minutes of use. Advice: don't buy it.

Bought this last year. My townhouse lawn is only 270 S.F. During the third use, the handle broke off. Constantly jammed. I rate this a COMPLETE PIECE OF JUNK!!!!

This new version locked up right out-of-the-box and I used an older version of this product for years without a problem. I am amazed that Scotts has been selling this version for several years now and received so many complaints on it yet do nothing to rectify the problem. I see in most of the responses from Scotts that they say they will alert their Quality Control Department of the situation. It's been years now and it looks like that department is ignoring them. I am familiar with importing products from overseas and have received products that were not built as specified and the quality was very poor. I took my loss's and did not try to push it onto the public as Scotts is doing. Please bring back the old version of this tool!

During use of the equipment for the second time, the handle froze so as to make it virtually unusable. As I was using the spreader, I was concerned that I might twist the handle and snap it off. When I was in the store to buy this hand held spreader, I had to try several in order to get one to crank effortlessly. When I found this one,, it has left me totally unsatisfied. Apparently all of the plastic gears inside do not mesh properly. I'm disappointed the company would put its name on this product.

The new design is not smooth and it gets so hard to crank after one hopper fill you have to stop. Please go back to old design with using the same materials.

I have never had any of the problems I have read here. Or any problems not mentioned here. I think the product is Excellent with minor care given to it. And if mine should ever fail to perform I would definately run out and buy another.

The crank/gear mechanism constantly clogged to the point it was difficult to turn. I do not recommend this product.

I had ordered it and when I picked it up at the store, it was not the same as the picture. Do not waste your time or money on this hand spreader for fertilizer or any granular product, because it will gum up the gears and the handle will break off if forced. It will work great to broadcast seed.

What ever happened to the idea you buy one piece of equipment and keep it for years? I certainly won't be buying anything similar to it in the future

I've use the hand spreader for 2-3 yrs. It is stamped 11164 TC2 so I don't know if it's the latest model. I rate this unit only as fair in seed/fertilizer distribution. Seed/ fertilizer flow through the bowl is good when the unit is full, but distribution becomes erratic and eventually stops when the bowl is nearly empty as material forms a cone with nothing flowing to the bowl center. If the fertilizer has picked up any moisture, then flow is really a problem. The bowl needs to be made deeper or have more angled sides so material flows to the distribution hole without having to shake the unit to keep material over the hole, or the spinner over the distribution hole needs to be made bigger and include an auger on the underside to move the material down.

There are times when the crank will stop turning and needs to be forced. Also the door that lets the contents flow does not close 100% of the time when the trigger is released.
