I am review number 3 and I just wanted to lat you know that the first 2 reviews are correct. To the person that said that it is great and they have had it for years is correct. If you look in the picture, (as of Jan 2010) the spreader has a screw holding the handle on. There is also 3 screws in the bottom (you cannot see). This spreader did last forever. Scott's has since changed their design to save on manufacturing cost and they have left us with a horrible spreader. Review # 2 is correct. You will use it one time and crud gets into the gears and you cannot turn the handle and you end up ripping the handle off. The more recent spreader that is no good has no screws holding it together.

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):
I owned this spreader for one spring/summer season. It jammed and clogged almost every time I used it.
This spring It jammed, and the cheep gears stripped. This is a very undependable and fragile piece of junk.
Looking for a dependable hand held spreader to replace it.

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):
I loved using the older model. It operated very smoothly, spread products evenly, and lasted an average of three years before wearing out...even after heavy use. The new model is useless. I bought four of them and returned the same four within a week. All of them jammed and became unuseable on their first or second use. I exchanged the broken ones for new ones hoping I had just gotten some lemons. The four new ones broke as well. You screwed up Scotts. Im shopping for a dependable replacement.

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):
Like everybody else said, this product used to be awesome. This newer "version" is the biggest waste of money you'll ever find. Very disappointing. Save your money and get something else. I gave it one star because that's the minimum allowed, otherwise I'd give it 0 for sure!

the original handy green was a great unit! scotts got greedy and wanted to save 10 cents and created landfill!!!like any of their products are reasonably priced to begin with. if you can find one that's put together with screws, you've got the original and it is fantastic!

The original Handy Green is awesome. We have bought over 20 of the Handy Green II and they are all trash! Do not buy this product until they go back to their original product.

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):
I have not had any issues with the gears or rotating mechanism but I have been disappointed with the agitator for use with fertilizer. I actually modified mine with stainless wire to cause more breakup of clumped fertilizer. Previously I would have to press through the hopper to break up clumps by hand, not a good practice mind you.

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):
What you are trying to spread will get jammed under the plastic dispersal plate making the spreader unusable. I tossed mine after one (frustrating) use.

The scott's handspreader used to be the benchmark of quality. However, they got cheap in thier newest version of the model. Thier newest incarnation is the biggest piece of trash I've ever had the misfortune to purchase. You can bet I'll never buy another product from scott's again until I'm assured that they are returning to the previous design.

fertilizer will jam in the spreader and the gears wear out - very cheaply made. Maybe it would work better for grass seed. For fertilizer - don't even try it.
