I really need to use a hand spreader for a variety of applications. I otherwise use a Scotts drop spreader. I've been using this little hand spreader for the last several years to lay seed, ice melter, fertilizer, and most recently some pelletized lime. The little orange crank handle broke about a year ago, but I managed to glue it back on sufficiently to work for a while. The pelletized lime was more difficult to spread and the handle came off again. Wish I could get a replacement crank handle, as the spreader is still needed. It works well when it works.

I work in the extermination industry. Have been for 15+ years. Scotts spreaders used to be made with MUCH better quality. I purchased 6 of these after i left mine at a job site by accident. Worst mistake I every made. All 6 of these spreaders jammed immediately at first day! Usually by 2nd or 3rd use. I returned 4 back to the store of purchase and voiced my concerns (went in one ear and was never addressed. That was last year that it happened. Bought another just to see if problem was corrected 3 mths ago. Still jammed@first use. This is the problem that I found...poor design with any weight in the spreader. Grass seed-works great! Fertilizer-if it is a heavy grain...forget it! We use a granular pesticide that is the same grain as sand(very fine but is heavy like sand) I figured out anything over 3/4 of a lb. jammed it up. The older spreader that was held together with screws was the best spreaderwe ever used. Mine lasted for 3yrs under heavy use. Replacing one like that...more worth the $12-$16 price tag. Replacing one that last 5 days? Really?

Large capacity, no cranking necessary

By Shareholder

Pros

  • Easy to Use

Cons

  • could be more powerful

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):

Used the Wizz for the first time yesterday with lawn bug killer. I like the large capacity for a hand held spreader. And it's balanced nicely. Would have liked it to be more powerful, but all in all it did the job effortlessly. Batteries kept strong through 2 5,000 square feet bags, not bad.

Comments about Scotts® Handy Green® Hand Held Spreader (71133):

No instructions on item itself to check. Pressing in orange button on handle only works for very short amt. of time. The "lawn treatment" became stuck quickly on the appropriate number. The more try to use, sprays out more "lawn treatment" and then comes through bottom as if there's a whole. Handle then becomes stuck again and falls off!

Ergomically, this spreader is great for relieving stress on your wrist. I had one of the originals, which was assembled with screws so you could open it and remove and or clean the gears. Now it's just junky snap together plastic, that looks and feels like a child's toy, and malfunctions frequently. Another throw away product to add to the landfill.

I bough this product yesterday, before reading any reviews. I used it for less than 15 minutes before giving up and returning it. The gears are not smooth which cause poor uniformity in spread pattern, as well as fatigue in your left wrist from the torque constantly changing. It may be ergonomically designed but is operationally an ergonomic failure. Perhaps I could have tolerated it if it at least spread product evenly.

This product is best for a tiny (200 sf) piece of turf. Not a lawn. It can only be used with your right hand, which will grow weary real quick after repeatedly turning the handle. If you have any predisposition to tendon problems, as I do, avoid this product. Also, the pesticide, if you're using this to spread one, will get all over the front of your body because the product is in your hand and therefore close to your body.

I had owned one of these years ago and was satisfied. I lost it in a move and replaced it recently with a newly purchased one from my local home supply store. Within minutes of use distributing Scotts products on my lawn the internal plastic gears stripped. Not only was this product a waste of money, I also wasted time returning to the store to buy a replacement product. I opened the case to determine why the spreader had broken and was surprised at how poorly this was designed and constructed. Clearly the soft, warped plastic internals had low quality control. Really a shameful product.

Had to return on first day of use. Could not even finish my yard and had to spread by hand because I didn't want to waste any more money on Scott's products. I will never buy anything branded with Scott's logo again. This spreader will jam and break immediately. If this product is this poorly made how could anything else made by Scott's be useful and not a waste of money.

I was only able to finish a small portion of my lawn by holding the release mechanism and sprinkling it around by waving my hand.

I purchased this today. This is battery operated and I really like it. Scotts is sending me replacement parts for my broadcast spreader. I needed something for now and figured I can still use it the areas were my broadcast spreader can't be used. It worked really well and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. Make sure the clumps are broken up. All I had to do was hold the trigger button and just walked the areas I needed to fertilize. My hands are over used because of my job and this made it so much easier on my hands/fingers. I also really liked it to get a good application around the base of my house for the bug treatment. So far I really like this product. And it has the edge guard too.

So, I started to turn the crank without any product and it seemed to kinda fix the speader. I then proceeded with the fertilizer application and the crank was almost impossible to turn! The gear mechanism is too weak for spreading fertilizer.

Scotts Handy Green II Hand-Held Spreader: The one I bought was a piece of junk. The handle turned just fine in the store, but one I put clover seed in it, it malfunctioned within 60 seconds and the crank seized. Additionally, the adjustable trigger activated gate did not close completely and small seed spilled through and I lost valuable seed. I purchased this because I had the Scotts Hand Held Spreader years ago, and it worked like a champ. It is clear that this re-engineered model has employed an inferior mechanism. DO NOT BUY IT! Look for the older model at garage sales.

The new crank mechanism is terrible. It keeps jamming. The old version of this spreader worked great. I'm trying to keep my old one going for as long as possible. I'll buy new ones if you bring back the old design.

I'm a gardener by trade. I had used the older version of the handheld spreader for years. When it wore out, I replaced it. I noticed the new one wasn't screwed together anymore. I thought it was updated and would last longer. After the first use with granular fertilizer, the crank stopped turning. I thought it might just be a one time thing. I have tried three more new ones. Each one did the same thing. By the reviews and my experience, it seems the quality in the gears has been downgraded. I liked the arm support, but I am not buying another one and waste more time.

This spreader was great when it worked, but after a while the crank became difficult to turn. I was sure to rinse it after every use, and it was always stored indoors. I'd replaced one, and then the second broke as well (the crank broke off on both). It couldn't last one season.

I had a hand spreader for a number of years, but it was starting to crack, and I decided to try to replace it with a newer model. Unfortunately, I chose this one. For about the first 20' of fertilizing with it, it worked beautifully. A bit harder to crank than expected, but otherwise was distributing well, and was easier to hold than my old one. After that, it was all downhill for it until it was pretty much useless. Pros: Good hopper size. Carries a good amount of fertilizer. Wrist/forearm support does a decent job of helping distribute the weight of a full hopper without tiring your hand out. Cons: The wrist/forearm support forces your hand into an awkward position to hold the handle and manipulate the trigger. It covers the top of your hand and causes you to have to pronate your wrist down a bit, which makes manipulating the trigger with your index finger (even in combination with other fingers) difficult. The spinner handle, shaft, and gears are apparently made of plastic. They are not up to the torque required to spin the distribution plate. The spinner handle itself is too short, and it requires a very high effort to get the plate to spin, and the effort itself causes the shaft to warp and twist, which in turns elevates the effort required, up to the point where the gears will begin to strip. This could probably be fixed by re-gearing the system, and using a stronger shaft. Some of the distribution plate problems are because the fertilizer can get under and around the baseplate. In my case, I was using Scott's Summergard, which despite it's large granule size, managed to work it's way down between the spinner and the baseplate, and I'm guessing even down to the shaft/gear area underneath. This causes the spinning plate to bind against the baseplate, making it again difficult to distribute the fertilizer. Overall, this was not worth the money spent on it, and I am very disappointed with it. It is a potentially good design, that was apparently never tested properly, or has suffered through poor manufacturing, or manufacturing cutbacks. I should have just resorted to carrying the bag of fertilizer and spreading it by hand for as much good as the hand spreader was. I can't give it any lower ratings than what is listed. About the only thing that could have made it worse would have been if it hadn't worked at all.

The Scotts Handy Green II looked like a good replacement for a handheld spreader I had used for 10+ years. And Scotts products have a good reputation. BUT, the crank mechanism on this unit is weak, weak, weak! The first time I used it I thought it might have longevity issues. It's ok for fine grass seed and very fine fertilizer granules. But ice melt and coarser fertilizer granules...forget it. Even coarser grass seed! Regardless of recommended settings, the crank mechanism tends to require considerable effort and jams, requiring dumping contents and trying to free the mechanism. After using this a few times, the handle twisted off. It has a nice ergonomic handle, but a weak and poorly designed crank mechanism. Pass on this spreader unless you use it for fine seed only!

I used your Max Green fertilizer and started the yard. This product is easy to use, spreads evenly and never once did it jam. The yard looks great and I would recommend any of your products. Best of all my husband was impressed with the yard and me!
