I don't know who I like the least, the manufacturer of this unit or our cheap builder. We replaced all the units one month after moving into our brand new home four years ago because of constant false alarms.
removing batteries and eventually ripping down all the units at 2am and throwing in trunk of car had not deterred the posessed equipment. Battery life seems short and when I do have excess smoke in kithen from pizza etc they never go off. now four months of unexplained intermittent false alarms no pattern. can't see the flashing and solid lights very well. Where they are located according to instructions ,they are impossible to reach and I think somebody must be playing a joke and really having a good laugh Don't even consider purchasing these and tell your builder you'll pay to upgrade.

Comments about FIRST ALERT BRK Smoke Alarm (9120B-12ST):

You've read the other reviews and now you're here, let me tell you, it's not that hard.

False alarms? Chirping? Change the batteries, in all of the detectors you have. Yes, all of them. What does the fire department say? Change your batteries every year! When I set my clocks back in the Fall, all my batteries get changed.

Is the battery door finicky? Well, yes. The battery will go in either way, but only one way will make proper contact and stop the chirping. TIP: If the battery door won't close, take the battery out, flip it over and put it back in (you had it upside down) Still won't go in? Give the alarm a 1/4 turn to detach it from the base, pull the connector out and, voila!, you can see what you're doing. Put the battery in (the right way) close the door, reattach the connector and replace the alarm in the base.

Are there other, more expensive, alarms out there? Sure! You can spend a ton of money on alarms, but before you do, you should know this: those 'awesome' First Alert alarms? They're made by BRK Electronics and use the same battery doors.

How hard can it be to design a fire detector with a battery it doesn't take a major in engineering to change? I DO have a major in engineering, and I was about to give up on this one. Seriously, 50% of their sales must be to people breaking their old one while trying to change battery.

Comments about FIRST ALERT BRK Smoke Alarm (9120B-12ST):

I replaced the 15 yr old smoke alarms in my bedrooms with this smoke detector. The included wiring adapters did not fit my existing kiddie connectors, but the included wired connector and a few wire nuts did the job. The battery door on this model is different than others: they designed for it to be accesible with out removing the detector from the wall or ceiling. However, you have to put the battery in at weird angle and it just doesn't quite work unless you take it down. My only complaint is that when wall mounted, there is no way you can see the indicator light.

Comments about FIRST ALERT BRK Smoke Alarm (9120B-12ST):

Electrician installed these units during a remodel (10 units)and now we need to remove them or we will loose serious sleep. They beep randomly when batteries are good and the sensor is free from dust and not blocked. Very hard to tell which one is bad because they are all interconnected and beeping at all times of the morning which never fails. I suspect that contractors must get kickbacks or get these things for very cheap and that is why there are so many very poor reviews of this BRK smoke alarm.

Comments about FIRST ALERT BRK Smoke Alarm (9120B-12ST):

I am a professional fire alarm installer and have used BRK commercial products for years, they are excellent products. This consumer detector is poorly designed, which I can't understand from a company like BRK. The battery door is a joke, you install the battery and to work the door must push the battery onto the contact points inside, only problem is the door latch is a defective and doesn't latch properly. You even wonder if it is making contact because their is not positive feedback of any type to indicate it's latched. Then the LED or light is another problem. if you mount this on a wall, of course leaving the 6 inch dead zone gap from the ceiling, you can't see the LED unless your on a ladder. Bad, bad design.

The alarms go off randomly with no cause all the time. I have changed the batteries in all of them but they keep going off. I finally pulled them off one at a time until the others stopped going off. That has stopped the problem so far. In order to replace all of them I am going to have to replace the electrical connector as well as the ceiling base. I just wish the contractors would use a decent product instead of going cheap. We would have paid for the upgrade!

We are gettinhg false alarms in the middle of the night and don't know which unit is malfunctioning since we're told that any one of the ten can malfunction and set off any other one. In addition the battery is extremely difficult to replace.

As a developer, my electrical contractor used these alarms in four houses I built. They are wired alarms with battery back-up. The battery insertion is a little tricky, but nothing that difficult--you just have to insert it correctly, and when it is latched up, the contacts are made automatically. I thought the sound level was quite adequate--on a par with any others I have used. I will continue to use it.

The battry is practically impossible to install and then, when it is installed, the locking pin does NOT lock the battery door.
I tested it will smoke and it really takes A LOT of smoke to cause the quite LOW alarm. The alarm just beeps three times and then stops and then beeps three times again, and so on. Not powerful enough to warm of danger.
