Don't waste your money...spend a few dollars more for accuracy. This item is not useful and should be used on a very limited basis!

Comments about Stanley® Magnetic Stud Finder (47-400):
This litte trinket did not find one nail behind my wall...I am able to see one of my studs behind my wall since there is one whole in it where I placed a conduit. I ran this product up and down that stud with no reaction from the stud finder. I'm pretty sure my drywall wasn't superglued to the stud!!

Comments about Stanley® Magnetic Stud Finder (47-400):
My home was built in the 20s with plaster on wood lath. For me, it helps to have a general idea where a stud is before I try and use any stud finder tools. I try knocking on the wall (deep/hollow sounds mean no stud) and measuring out from doors/corners/outlets (studs should be every ~16"). Once I have a good guess, I use a finder to precisely identify studs/nail heads.
For plaster, I found my electronic stud finder fairly useless (Zircon i65, which supposedly scans "thicker" walls). So, I decided to give both the Stanley and C.H. Hanson magnetic finders a try. I bought the Stanley locally and ended up finishing my project while waiting for the C.H. Hanson finder to be delivered.
Now that I have the Hanson, it clearly has a stronger magnet. This makes it easy to find studs quickly with no prior guessing involved. But, I do not feel it is very precise. I find it ambiguous to about 1/4".
The Stanley finder takes a bit more time to locate nails, but by design you know exactly where the nail is. I use it to locate a few nails and then approximate the stud location. This works best when the finder is held completely level such that the slightest force can cause the magnet to move from one side to another. Basically, you're trying to get the nail to pull the magnet in an unexpected direction.
The Stanley level is great. The C.H. Hanson might save some time and work better on extremely thick walls. But, you will probably want the Stanley for precision anyway. You can buy both for less than most electronics stud finders!

Comments about Stanley® Magnetic Stud Finder (47-400):
Barely works in my house. Only detects nails/screws that are backing out of studs making a visible bump. It is just as accurate to knock on the wall and listen for a change in sound to find the stud.
