About Me Casual Do-It-Yourselfer

Pros

  • More workable than tube glazing

Cons

  • Seems really dry

Best Uses

Comments about Dap 33 Glazing Compound (12120):

Bought this because I was low on funds and couldn't afford the glazing in the caulk tube.

When I opened the tub, I was expecting something the consistency of what comes out of a tube; this seemed pretty dry, as if it had been open to the air for a few hours. Still, it was pliable and workable, and applied much more neatly and easily than the tube glazing. However, when I drew the knife across it with some pressure to make my seams neat, it separated on the edges and pulled out of the crevice, just as I would expect for a compound that was old and dried out. We will see. Glad I have a lot of push points in place, in case this stuff doesn't hold.

We have trouble with the glazing getting mildew on it. This is even after we have primed with oil and finish coated with high-quality acrylic paint . Can you tell me why this is happening.

Good product need patients to do a good job

Comments about Dap 33 Glazing Compound (12120):

At first when I was trying to figure how to use this product I got easily frustrated and didn't want to do the job anymore. Although I kept on going and was able finish 10 windows in 3 days. I found it easier to use the putty with latex gloves on because the putty doesn't stick to your hands and it helps you smooth it out. At first I was using a wide putty knife but that didn't work good because it was hard to work in the corners and places like that so I bought the tiniest one they had probably 5cm wide and went to work and it turned out great by the end in my opinion for a first time user. I found when I left the putty in the sun it made it stickier and easier to smooth out. Dry time on the container says 7 to 14 days so you have to be patient with this product. After 3 days of sun about 20 - 28 degrees celius its has a harder top layer but is still soft.Overall I liked this product.

On line instructions and tips to use product would be nice. Print on tub is difficult to read being both small and blurred.

Comments about Dap 33 Glazing Compound (12120):

I am restoring 39 windows in my 1936 colonial. Way too cost prohibitive to hire out. I've been at it for 2 years; my only experience, I am a lawyer by trade, is with my own windows. I have found DAP 33 "easy" to use and there is a uniform consistency from can to can. Simply work it in your hand, apply and cut it with whatever knife you can work with. I keep a little linseed oil on hand and occasionally lightly coat my knife if I find it dragging. It took a couple windows to improve my technique, but I can do a 6 over 6 in an hour or so. I tried Sher Wms glazing (I use their paint), but too sticky and much harder to work with. Bottom line, if you have some experience, this product works as advertised.

Window glazing with DAP 33 takes some finesse, but if you practice your technique, you should have very nice results. My only "complaint" is that I don't like the long wait time before I can paint.

Comments about Dap 33 Glazing Compound (12120):

Had a difficult time applying it, possibly it was "old stock" the consistency was like flour and water and did not adhere well to the glass or oil base primer. I installed to 10 X 32' panes in a door with it. Comes back off very easy regardless of the pressure I used to apply it and it is very soft. I am in my 70's and have done this many times but possibly I missed something. It did get the job done but took three times as long as normal. I hope it sets up a little so I can paint it before the cold weather comes.
