Comments about LAMSON Carlon PVC 1 Gang Old Work Outlet Box with Retainer Arms (B114R-UPC):
This Carlon outlet box is the type that has two small "wings" on the back that will flip open and extend behind the drywall as you tighten the facing screws. So this is the box to use when you want an outlet in a location without a nearby stud. I was a bit skeptical of mounting a box in what was basically a small hole in drywall, but this box really gripped the drywall and stayed put. I was able to do my wiring without any hint of box wiggle. Now ideally I would want my box to be attached to a stud, but with some remodeling projects you just can't always have it that way. I highly recommend this Carlon box for those situations. By the way, ACE also sells a variety of other Carlon box sizes that work in the same way.
