For the price you could buy one of these and not feel too bad in a year or two when it dies and you throw it out. Easy to use right out of the box. Wet grass and weeds seem to stick on the inside of the shield, but that didnt seem to affect the performance.

As some of the other commenters have mentioned, you'll burn through a bunch of .065 line. The bump feeder tends to catch the line way too much and you'll end up having to manually pop it open and feed the line more than you really should. When the bump feeder portion is working optimally, you'll do great trimming for light grass, but anything marginally thick will laugh at you. You don't have the option of replacing the head with something better either. You're stuck with what you have.

And, if you tough it out like me, you'll discover that while the bump spool can be found everywhere, the bump cover that hold everything in place, and will break first due to the large amount of use, doesn't exist anywhere but online for about $10 or more.

Skip this product in favor of something with thicker line.

Comments about Black & Decker® Electric Trimmer (ST4500):

    Jeremy's review is accurate.
Since the first day of owning this thing the bump line feed has been a struggle. It works 1 time out of 3. The other two times you have to release the bump cap, free the spool, and manually feed out some line.
Now that the bump cap has disintegrated and I find a replacement with shipping will be about half the cost of a new machine, I am giving up the struggle. I really hate to throw away working machines, but this is just a misery to use.

I HAVE HAD TWO EACH OF THIS PRODUCT THE LAST TWO YEARS. THEY BOTH WERE GREAT FOR 4-5 MONTHS THEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED. THE LINE I HAD TO STOP TAKE THE TOP OF PULL THE LINE AND WEED AND THEN REPEAT OVER AND OVER. THEN IT STARTED WORKING AND THEN NOT. STOP. WORK THEN NOT. IF I POINTED THE BOTTOM UP IN THE AIR IT WOULD START WORKING THEN AS SOON AS I POINTED IT BACK TO THE GROUND IT WOULD STOP AGAIN. WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER BLACK & DECKER PRODUCT.

Comments about Black & Decker® Electric Trimmer (ST4500):

Bought it last year on sale and it worked great for about the first 6 times....THEN the line started jamming every 4 minutes! Had to pop off the cap and manually feed the line and put the cap back on = incredible waste of time and energy and line! Tall grass? What is tall? Anything over 8 inches puts a heavy strain on this machine and you will have to make several swipes in increments to cut it!

NOW, it automatically feeds itself and wastes long sections of line, and the spool locks up! The stores no longer sell the cap for this model, necessitating buying it online or from a distant B&D store! Store employees tell me the B&D rep does their restocking and no longer includes this cap! I guess they are trying to sell out of this undesirable product and will not even stock the cap for it! ...and to top it off, they censored my review and I had to change my wording!

SAVE YOURSELF TIME, $, AND GRIEF and upgrade to an AUTOMATIC FEED WEED EATER! It will cost less in the long run...and maybe even a different brand.....

Comments about Black & Decker® Electric Trimmer (ST4500):

I had a similar trimmer for about 20 years. Worked like a champ so I bought a similar one. Had it a bit over 1 year. I have several acres and used it mostly for weed eating and it worked great when it worked. Line use was great, no complaints. Biggest complaint is it won't feed. Today in less than 1 hr of use I had to manually undo the housing and release more line at least 4 times. Spool was stuck every time. It has been like this the last couple of months. Now it is also having some issue maybe with the switch. When you press it, it won't turn on. Just keep trying it will after a few times. I usually never write anything but this has me a bit frustrated and I'm heading over to get another trimmer. I've had it.

Comments about Black & Decker® Electric Trimmer (ST4500):

This product won out over a few others simply because of the low price tag. I had not done much in the way of landscaping before I purchased this product so I overlooked some flaws that I should not have overlooked. By far the biggest flaw with this product is the fact that the maximum recommended line diameter is .065 which is much too thin. The result is that you spend as much (or more) time feeding and changing line as you do actual yard work. The frustration caused by this poor design and the money you spend on replacement line far exceeds the savings over buying a better weedeater to begin with.

Bought this one year ago and used it throughout last summer and fall, and the beginning of this year. Worked great last year, but in one week this spring, the guard fell off, the orange cap holding the string cartridge blew apart, and the little lever inside the hub that both propels the string and retards it fell off somewhere in the tall grass. [...]. Think next time I will spring the extra money and get something sturdier.

Have had the trimmer for 1 year and have used it, maybe 5 times. It would only take about 15 min to edge my yard if everything worked well. Have gone through 1+ spools of line. Line constantly breaks or cuts its self just outside the spool. Have to rethread several times. The 15 min job takes about 45 min. Yesterday, after putting in a NEW factory wound spool, the line broke 4 times before it jamed and cannot be removed. If it costs more than $5 to fix, it will have a new home in the local land fill!
