I was jealous of friends vegetable gardens and wanted one of my own but where to put it? In the front of our house! I got free bricks and built my own raised bed with three tiers on a small patch of dirt. Filled it with Miracle Grow and planted. Top row was tomatoes, middle row was herbs and bottom row was lettuce. A few weeks went by and all of a sudden you could practically watch the plants growing in real time! I had never seen a 6 foot tall tomato plant. Not only was it huge but had so much fruit that I made enough pasta sauce to last the winter! My Basil also grew enormously! I was happy I had planted the tomatoes in the back! This year I added more soil but left the lettuce to pots I can store overnight as I had some bandits eating at my organic salad bar!

I'm not sure what has happened to this product because the wife and I purchased it off last year's reviews. We purchased 14 bags from Lowes to fill our raised garden beds and were taken back with its contents. Soil? Where was the soil? All 14 bags were dirt colored twig and fibrous mulch, not to mention several pieces of plastic we had to pick out. We decided to fill the beds anyway thinking we were just crazy only to find freshly grown mushrooms days later. We have no mushrooms anywhere else in our entire backyard; we only have mushrooms inside the Miracle-Gro Garden "Soil" filled raised garden beds. Its upsetting because we've already planted the tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers & canteloupe and they aren't doing very well. About 3 weeks ago we decided to transplant a zucchini in the dirt beside the garden bed as a comparison. The results are staggering! The zucchini leaves in our yard soil are deep green and approximately 3-4 larger. The garden bed zucchini is smaller and has a yellow-green color in contrast. “Grows plants twice as big versus unfed plants.? Not from our experience with this product, in fact it was the reciprocal effect. We've heard of the good name of Miracle-Gro when growing up so we decided to try it. We want to give the products a second chance but are hesitant with this experience.

    Tons of Weeds

    By chardon

Comments about MIRACLE GRO Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables (73451300):

I wish I had read these reviews prior to purchasing. While I did not have any issue with my plants growing, they were taken over by a weed that this product introduced to my garden. The weed was only where I used the Miracle Grow Garden Soil. It ruined my garden because if I pulled the weeds it would pull out my plants too. Horrible product that I will never purchase again. I wish I had saved my receipts and packaging. I would have tried to get my money back. However, even a refund would not have reversed the damage done to my garden. I don't know if I will ever get rid of this weed.

Comments about MIRACLE GRO Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables (73451300):

Sure wish I had read these reviews before purchasing eleven+ 2 cu. feet bags of garden soil and several bags of potting mix from both Wal-Mart and Home Depot. I have always trusted Miracle Gro products but after the mess I've experienced this season I won't ever buy it again. I've mixed the garden soil and potting mix to use in large containers and beds. When I opened the bags I noticed a white fungus (?) in some of the bags and the soil was more wood chips than soil. Since the name on the bag said "Miracle-Gro" I decided to go ahead and use the soil. These are the problems I've experienced in my gardens this year: seeds won't sprout or, if they do, don't grow soil is inundated with grubs sprouting mushrooms soil smells sour I live on a very limited budget and rely heavily on my garden to produce fresh vegetables for my family. This kind of failure is absolutely not acceptable and has been a major drain on my pocketbook. I am so disappointed in this product and am embarrassed that I even referred it to friends who are having the same problem.

I did not read the fine print they say. I put the soil into a container and they said I shouldn't. Nice try! I took some plants and put them in containers and others into the garden, both groups of plants turned yellow, the leaves curled up and some fell off. The plants where I did not use this soil are growing fine. I have used Miricale grow plant food for years and I like it. This soil stuff is bad! This doesnt work in containers or in the garden.

I have been gardening most of my 60+ years and always used Miracle Grow products. But imagine my surprise when my plants all either died or were stunted when I used your Miracle Grow Garden Soil last year! Stupid me tries it again this year because I can't believe that its my soil (your product) that's spoiling my every attempt to grow in certain areas. I have actually been testing various strengths of it and low and behold nothing will grow in your stink which incidentally is just what it smells like. What is it really ? 100% cow manure? Ruined my production again this year. Never again Miracle Grow and I'm telling all my gardening friends too. Beware!

I have been a miracle grow customer for years and have been mostly happy customer. This year, as usual picked about 20 bags of 2 cubic feet garden soil for my vegetable garden and mail box area. The soil looked anything but soil but did a mistake of not returning it and used it. Two months later, marigold which should have been beaming with flowers are all dead and my peppers and okra which should have been fruiting are 2-3 inches tall. So there goes my 2014 growing season.. What a waste of money, time, precious water and back breaking garden work!! Looks like I am not the only one... Never again Miracle grow, never again..

Purchased Miracle grow garden soil for flowers and vegetables for the first time this year. Caught it on sale and purchased 50 bags. Have always heard it was good stuff. I had seedlings already started in plain dirt that were ready to be transplanted into raised beds at the beginning of the season. As soon as I planted them in the beds containing this soil they began dyeing. Plants planted in other beds without this soil did well. Couldn't figure it out till I cut a leaf off and looked at it under magnification. SPIDER MITES were infesting every box with this soil in it. Did not want to blame the soil so opened a new bad and check it sure enough the new bag had it inside as well. Every bag was infested. Very disappointed will never buy this product again.

I have made extensive use of Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for over ten years in my large garden. I buy over 60 bags at the start of each spring season. Used to be happy with the quality and the results for my plants. But this year, about 60% of the bags have obvious visible problems -- plastic debris, big chunks of wood, bad smell, clumpy texture, and/or excessive wood chips/bark. You can open two bags purchased on same day and they have nothing in common by physical appearance or texture. I tried screening out the obvious debris and using the remainder of the soil. But my raised beds have suffered as a result. About half of my plants/plots are performing decently and the other half are a dead zone. What has gone wrong with your company's quality control process?

We bought 10 bags of Miracle Gro Garden Soil for our butterfly garden. I am hugely disappointed in this Miracle Gro product. The "soil" dries out quickly and is mainly bits and pieces of wood chips and some type of dry fibrous material. Instead of the healthy plants we expected to get after using this soil, the plants look stunted and sickly. Not what we expected from Miracle Gro.

I have used Miracle-Gro products for years and have been very happy. When I needed a little more soil for my vegetable beds, I purchased a few bags of the Garden Soil. The bags were laying in the sun before I opened them and I could smell an odor coming from them. When I opened them up, there was a VERY STRONG odor, kind of like used motor oil. I'm supposed to use this in my vegetable bed? This really scares me. I think Miracle-Gro has lost control of its quality monitoring. I will never buy again!

I did contact the company, however I'm not sure what their explanation will be...

The plastic and rubber not to mention the wires were simply beyond acceptable. Very disappointed!

I am very disappointed in the product. I have been gardening for about 1/2 a century and never been this disappointed in a gardening product. The appearance is much like that of last year's leftover or unsold bark mulch that has just been re-bagged with a handful fertilizer pellets. There were even 3/4" and 1/2" stones in the mix! Granted, they say on the back of the bag in tiny print that the purchaser is partnering with Scotts in 'one of the world's largest recycling efforts' reusing 'billions of pounds of materials from yards, farms ' and other sources. If they are doing so, they need to alert the purchaser in BIG letters on the FRONT of the bag that these materials are reclaimed. The materials should also be better composted (maybe another year or two?) and screened for stones - believe me, my garden in NH has quite enough stones without importing any!

They look light colored and frail. We bought five bags of Miracle Grow garden soil as always. These bags had so much plastic and wood chips and hard clumps. My fault for not returning them for a refund. It's not like Miracle Grow to be like this. It has always been of great quality. Not this year. Thanks, Now I will probably have to buy my veggies this year.

I have always had good results with Miracle-Gro products & felt like I could buy any of the products with confidence but I am so disappointed in this garden soil. We bought 43 bags for our new raised garden beds. When we opened them we were very surprised to find sticks, wood material, etc & not a lot of soil. We went ahead with our plans with the thought that Miracle-Gro products are good stuff. We filled all of our raised beds & planted several different vegetables. This is the worst vegetable garden we have ever had. The plants are not growing & developing like they should & we have had several different plants die. All the work & money spent on our beds & plants it was a waste!! I will NEVER buy this product again!!!!

I have been using this product for years and typically rave about how wonderful it is. This year has been a great let down. I purchased 8 bags, so far, for raised garden beds I have built for my mother. I am not sure if the product I am buying in central NY is manufactured differently than that I purchase in Boise, ID. However, there is a great difference in quality. The NY product smelled heavily of manure. I expect a small smell and then the smell of dirt. You could smell nothing but manure. There is a lot of sticks and wood with manure and the consistency is off. Even throughout the bags, it is off. I hope this is a fluke and the quality is back in check for the next batch.

This product contained rocks, sticks, roots, bark, shredded plastic, hard bits of metal, plastic bottle pieces and other unidentified matter. Unfortunately, I had opened and dumped 4 bags of it into my raised garden, before I realized how bad it was. What a disaster! I can't believe the time that I wasted picking through this mess. Never again.

I bought 25 bags of Miracle-Grow Garden Soil to fill a new raised bed. I choose this brand because I expected a high quality product, i.e. a rich humus based soil. Instead it is a lightweight amendment, seemingly primarily wood fibers and peat-like materials. Although disappointed I decided not to go through the hassle of returning it. It was easy to apply and spread but it's volume was significantly less than stated on the bags, i.e. what the bag label stated was 1 cubic foot was actually about 2/3 of a cubic foot. Overall this was a bad value and a bad purchase, which I will not repeat.

My biggest complaint about this product is the fact that it had pieces of plastic all throughout the bag. I found thick plastic straw like pieces. I even found a piece of an old Mattel toy from 2009. I could read this on the hunk of plastic I found in my soil among many other plastic pieces. One plastic is not biodegradable so it does not make any sense to be in a garden product and two plastic is terrible for the environment because of the fact that it is not biodegradable. Is it even legal to mix plastics in soil like this? Just because you think people won't notice among all the rocks and twigs and minimal soil does not make it okay. The fact that there is plastic all through out this product is unacceptable. I don't know who in your company thought this was a good idea but they deserve to be fired. I will never by Miracle Grow soil again. Very disappointed.

Thought it was a great bargain at $2 /bag. Biggest mistake I ever made. I worked the soil into my existing ground very thoroughly. It contains large chunks of rock hard material. The top inch or so of the soil dries hard andccracks, but the ground underneath is soaking wet. My plants rotted off. The onea that havw survived are being watered everyday with miracle grow because they are so stunted and nutrient deprived. This soil is nothing but muck.My mother had the same issue with this soil, but her plants faired much better than mine, because her ground was pure sand which allowed for better drainage, in spite of this garden soil. She has alsovhad to water with miracle grow daily. Some of the bags even smelled like pure sewagewhen opened.

I had trouble keeping my plants watered since the "garden soil" kept drying out. I only ended up using 1 bag and will find another product to use on my garden bed.

There was an odor in the car driving home from the store. Once we arrived home and unloaded our garden supplies we searched for source of odor. Upon opening the Miracal Grow bags we were over come by a strong smell of diesel fuel in all three bags. This was to be used for vegetable garden. We will never purchase this product again. I have used miracle grow products for years and have never experienced a problem. This is unacceptable and poor quality control.

Last week we decided to "splurge" and buy some so called high quality soil to add to our flower beds, and bought a dozen bags of this. The first bag we opened was fair once we removed the big chunks of wood. The remaining bags had a mixture of dirt, wood, glass, plastic bags, and huge pieces of metal(possibly aluminum siding). After spending the afternoon CLEANING DIRT, we made the decision to change to another less expensive brand that turned out to be of far better quality. NEVER AGAIN!!! We have always had good luck with all of the Miracle Grow brand fertilizers and potting soils, so we expected the same quality in this product. after it rained, we were able to collect more garbage from our beds after the soil had washed away from it.

We purchased 10 large bags of the flower and vegetable soil to enhance our garden. We rented a rotto tiller and thought our soil was lovely and ready for vegetable plants. It took about 2 weeks before grass and weeds began to grow along with the peppers and tomatoes. We wish we had put the soil on the few bare spots we have in our front yard. We have used Miracle Grow Products for years and are shocked at this development! Lots of lovely grass and weeds. Yuck! The weeding begins!

To fill a new raised bed area I made, To be watered with Ollas. I found the product in good condition. I think the mix was correct and I am sure all the new veggie plants will enjoy their lives there. I saw the other reviews with their problems, But I felt I should let folks know I did not have any issues with this product.

The soil contained so much wood we checked the bags to see if we accidently picked up mulch. After the rain the little bit of soil that was in with the wood chips settled leaving our lawn covered with wood chips that we had to rake up and dispose of.

Also, has a sour odor and molds very fast. I wouldn't buy this again or recommend it to anyone.

What happened..to make matters worse 3/4 of the bag had a thick mold in it. Amazing...my special needs daughter and I had so much planting to do and now this...and being both highly allergic to mold we both became ill...please stop making this and please your customers again.

I bought a 2 cu ft. bag of MG Garden Soil at WalMart in Ardmore, OK. It has some soil in it, but is by far mostly wood chips. It's awful. Even a 50-50 mix with GOOD soil would need constant watering because water would just run through it with all those wood chips in it. I know WalMart would give me a refund but I ripped the bag open & I'd have to scrape it all up and take it 16 miles round trip for a refund. I took a photo but you wouldn't take 480 pixels.
