Have been grilling/smoking appx. 5 days a week year around for the last 3 years, Cowboy Lump Charcoal is the best I have used.
Matchlight, Generics, nothing is quicker or easier, weather it is used with lighter fluid, or in a chimney, it is ready to use in 15 mins. and the stuff burns HOT! a little goes a long way, and the taste of the food is AMAZING! A definite must have for beginners and "charcoal commandos".

Not A Particularly Quality Lump Charcoal
Cannot recommend. I'll rate it 5 on a scale of 1-10 for 3 Stars.
I have never had much of any positive experiences using this particular brand lump charcoal.
Cannot recommend. I'll rate it 5 on a scale of 1-10 for 3 Stars.
I have never had much of any positive experiences using this particular brand lump charcoal.
A good lump charcoal should not have a significant amount of small pieces (less than approx. 1 1/4 inches in diameter) nor, particularly large pieces (greater than approx. 3 1/2 inches).
Lots of smaller pieces and I've had a few larger than the size of my fist. Some of this can be expected of coarse but not to the extent of roughly combined 45 percent very small and very large pieces.
The brand typically has considerable small pieces (about 35% on average), a few large pieces (approximently 10% on average) with the balance 55% optimum usable product (size).
This product snaps and pops more than any lump charcoal that I have used, particularly during initial stages of burn.
The burn time is average. And, could be improved with better size pieces provided during production. Wood used and the production process implemented are the primary contributing factors attributed to burn time.
Occasionally you will find a rock or two in these bags. I have also found tree limb pieces that are only slightly chared. Once I discovered a piece of plywood. You do not want plywood glue as part of your cooking experiences.
"New" bags now advertise "Now, Lasts Longer". My experiences, lighting well and good heat production are it's only favorable attributes. Same average burn times here.
Gave Cowboy another shot and again was proven to be an inferior product for barbecuing and smoking use. Same size and burning irregularities, quite a bit of dust.
Though it is reasonably priced, I do not consider Cowboy brand a bargain and would be willing to spend three or four more dollars more for a quality product available for use.
Useful for grilling in a pinch I suppose. There are better alternatives out there superior to this brand of charcoal.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Cowboy Charcoal 8.8lbs:
If you want a natural charcoal that burns clean and extremely hot, this is the product for you. Beware however, once you use this product, you will never want to use petrolium based charcoal again. It will leave you food with a nice hint of a campfire smokey taste that you just can't get with propain and compressed square charcoal. Certainly worth the extra cost if you take pride in your burgers, brats, chicken, and steak!

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Cowboy Charcoal 8.8lbs:
I see a lot of down reviews for this brand, but I must have bought a good bag because almost all of the charcoal in the bag was usable. I used to use charcoal briquettes but when I saw this on sale at [@], I figured I'd try it. It was fast to light and very hot and cooks very well, just like over an open campfire like the cowboys used to (without the flames). When my steaks and burgers came off the grill, you could taste a difference. No chemical aftertaste, a mild smokey flavor. It was one of the finest pieces of meat I have ever served! I will certainly be buying this again!

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Cowboy Charcoal 8.8lbs:
Cowboy is a good value for the money. It lights easy and cooks as well as any other lump charcoal.
My only complaints are there are too many (very) small pieces in a bag, and not enough large chunks. And, it tend to pop and spark a lot when you first start it.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Cowboy Charcoal 8.8lbs:
Cowboy Charcoal seems to have a long reputation of bad reviews. I tried it because that's all I could find locally in February. I got a Kamado Joe for by birthday, and could not wait to try it out. cowboy charcoal is very easy to light, and burns real hot. In fact I got my Kamado joe up to 800 degrees in 15 minutes. Wow!
My first cook was Pork chops, and the flavor was great, but....after all the bad reviews I figured I owed it to myself to buy some premium name lump hardwood charcoal. The premium lump was more dense, and burned longer. The bad side: dense lump takes longer to start. It does burn longer, and I would want this ability for long smokes or cooks. Bad side: no flovor. I was totally disappointed with the lack of good flavor. So after trying 3 brands, I went back and bought a 20 lb bag of Cowboy Charcoal. I cooked last night, and Ohhh Doggie! The flavor was back.
Maybe Cowboy has changed their quality control. All of my bags contained good lump with no scraps. American wood I might add. Take a good look at allot o the premium brands. Their wood comes from South America, and has NO flavor.
Do yourself a favor, and ignore the bad reviews. Try it and decide for yourself! Cowboy is a great American sourced Charcoal.

I have to agree with the great reviews. The Cowboy lump charcoal has provided many a good smoke in the Big Green Egg. Burns clean and noticeably less ash than briquettes.
Often, I can find the larger bags on sale and it's an awesome bargain.

I had to order of in-store pick up because they didn't have any in stock. That should say a lot about the quality. Very little byproduct left behind. CLEAN EVEN BURNING! I wouldn't recommend using for direct grilling purposes but great for indirect smoking.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Cowboy Charcoal 8.8lbs:
We have used Cowboy Charcoal for about 3 years now on our grill. In that we have no source locally, we had to use one of the 'leading brands' of charcoal and found that it (the leading brand) had a noticed taste of a definate coal taste. NO MORE 'leading brand' charcoal for us. We see that we always have on hand Cowboy Charcoal for the best of the best in terms of taste!

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Cowboy Charcoal 8.8lbs:
This lump is excellent for searing steaks or slo cooking a pork shoulder for 12 hours. Burns hot and clean with little ash to clean up. This lump has a light flavor to it which makes it excellent for adding wood logs for long smoking sessions. They have an excellent web-site which tells of the history of Cowboy Coal. Wood comes from Tennessee not some South American wood. Get some and you will love it. Ace has the best price in town!!
