Three Badgers were installed by the builder in my new 3-Family home 1st occupied in January 2008. They have plastic housings. Two out of three developed cracked housings near where the disposal attaches to the sink drain hole and had to be replaced by December 2010. Performance was otherwise satisfactory. I cannot recommend these units because of the high rate of housing cracks.

My wife and I bought a new In-Sink-Erator Badger 5 today to replace the one that was in our kitchen when we bought the house eleven years ago. The only hard part of the installation was removing the old waste disposal unit. Only God knows how long it had been there under that sink! And that was really only an issue of the old pipes taking some elbow grease to loosen from the old unit. The new disposal installed without a hitch. The instructions are very straightforward and simple to follow.I highly recommend the Badger 5. Yes, there are other models that are quieter, but I was pleased to find that our new Badger 5 was considerably quieter than the one it replaced.The best part was I got this In-Sink-Erator during Ace Hardware's 20% off sale today. Even without the sale, Ace's price was on par or less than the competition. Plus, my local Ace Hardware has just about the best customer service around. Choke on THAT, [@]!Bottom line: If you are looking for a quality, affordable waste disposal unit for your kitchen the Badger 5 is an excellent choice. And make sure you buy it at Ace!

Badger 5 worked for approxametly two yesrs. It clogged on small items. Ironically my neighbor and I installed the Badger 5 in our kitchens 3 months apart. Both disposals cracked and leaked after vtwo years and within 3 months of each others installations. The disposals cracked in the middle not even at a seam. Pure junk compared to other brands.

These things do NOT last. We use this disposal very sparingly and never put anything hard down it. Nevertheless, it has developed 3 vertical cracks in the housing and leaks. I found many similar complaints online. Very disappointed in this product and will not buy another.

I can attest to the plastic housing cracking and leaking, it happened to mine after a few years. Unfortunately to upgrade to metal housing means a significant price increase, so looks like I'll be taking my chances again with a plastic one when I replace it.

Get real folks. It is a [$] product with a two year warranty. If it lasts two years then you got your money's worth. I forget how long mine lasted but I know it is longer than two years. It is easy to install. So, folks, get another, install it yourself and save money over a plumber. If you want a garbage disposal that will last forever, spend more money.

We have just had our 3 year old unit fail completely.
The plastic housing is cracking and severely leaking. Of course this is not something that can be fixed by replacing a washer or something simple.
When I phoned their customer service, I was told that as it was out of the 2 year warranty, they were not interested. While I can understand this for minor problems, it is pretty bad when the unit is completely worthless such a small time after installation.
Emerson products might have been good 20 years ago, but they sure aren't now.
Unless you like doing plumbing repairs, steer clear.

my 18-year old brother installed the badger5--19 YEARS AGO! It's worked great, no problems, no trouble, and not one service call. Age and almost daily use finally got the better of it. And, after 19 years, it's the SAME PRICE!
