Bought this mower after a good day of online comps.
My Ace Hardware filled the oil, gas, test ran and showed me a quick how to.
The mower starts easily with the first pull. It simply needs a quick prime and you are ready to go.
I found that it is light and easy to use on a sloped back yard.
The grass was a little tall due to my existing rider biting the bullet. But this mower cut right through with no bogging down. The big rear wheels help tremendously with maneuverability on an uneven back yard.
Overall this mower highly exceeds my expectations.

How do you describe something that gives up, fails or just doesn't run on its third use (1.5 months)....yes: you get what you pay for (so I guess I am responsible and should have thought better for my .43acre suburban lot covered in mostly beds).

Out the box, this mower ran fine to bag leaves; though the bag is small and filled fast *(run with height set high). Second time, runs fine, but note that it just doesnt seem to cut simple weeds **(almost as if blade is dull, knocks over dandelions doesnt cut'em so keep double passing) Third time...well run 2 minutes shut down, wait, crank;run 5 minutes, shut down, on and on for next hour. ***(how frustrating on top of the growing knowledge from use that this really is a flimsy machine.)

Oil good, Gas (non-ethanol) check, Plug good, filter cleaned...mower now has approximately 4 hours use and I feel "had". It was cleaned between use, etc.

Maybe maybe it was something I did; Maybe that 2week old gas was it...OR maybe craftmen isn't the company of old. how sad.
I worked on golf courses and did landscaping as a young adult so I have some experience running equipment. Dang I fell for low price.

Lastly, I should have realized not having a seperate throttle would drive me insane. Contrary to the brochure claims of being set for optimum performance at factory, this cheap way around is asinine.

I bought this in March 2017. Used it twice, each time it was hard to start. I've let it set for 2 months while I was out of town and now it won't start at all. I've had a lot of Craftsman products over the years with good quality, this just isn't one of them. I'll see if small engine repair thinks it is worth fixing.

Comments about Craftsman 5.0 Engine Torque Rear Bag Push Mower (7137430):

I bought this lawn mower 1 year ago. I had the 6.0 version of this motor for years and never had a problem...just finally went out after old age. I have had trouble starting this mower ever since I bought it. At first it took about 10 pulls; during use it started okay, unless I took a break, and then I would have to go through the 10 pull routine again. Each time that I used the mower, it took more and more pulls to make the initial start. I have 1/3 acre, 1800 sq. ft. of which is my house. I live in Arizona, and my yard only requires a light cut every 2 weeks. At the start of spring this year, it took me about 100 pulls (e.g. 20 pulls with no start & let it rest, come back in 10 minutes and do the same with no luck, etc). Right now, I am in the midst of another 100 pull episode. If you want a hernia, this mower might work for you...if you have a bad back and want it to get worse, this might work for you, too. I have been told that this mower is no longer made in the USA; maybe that i the problem, i.e. no quality control. I obviously cannot recommend this mower.

I bought this mower 5 yrs ago. I have been mowing 2 acres on Hawaii Island every 2 weeks. After 5 yrs, the only problem is the paint is coming off in places. No big deal. I got my money's worth out of this machine and it's still going. Keep it clean, use non alcohol gas and change the oil, keep the blades sharp and you'll get your money's worth also. I bought the extended warranty and never used it. I think a lot people think craftsman mowers are junk because they get one used from an owner like me who has used it to the max.

Being a base model, you don't have a lot of frills of self-propelled, etc. I've had this mower over a year and it has had 0 problems. It cuts evenly, starts EASILY on the first pull, and the large rear wheels really do make a difference from older mowers that I've used. I suspect people with problems on this may have bad (old gas) if it's been stored a winter or maybe they flooded the carb by over priming or having had the mower tipped or something with the oil/gas having a problem. It's a pretty common engine and I'm surprised by the reviews of some premature problems with them. I've had none. I'd definitely recommend this mower to anyone with a smaller city type lawn. If you have a huge lawn, then definitely go for more features/ruggedness. This one does well on my small city corner property.

Got this lawn mower last summer after our old 15-year-old mower finally gave up the ghost. It worked reasonably well for the first half dozen times I used it. By fall, it was requiring 3 or 4 pulls of the cord to start, which worried me.

Now, after being stored in the shed over the winter, I cannot get it to start at all. After 3 hours attempting to get the mower to start, I am lucky not to have blown out my shoulder. At age almost 51, I can't afford to be going to war every week with a lawn mower. A huge disappointment, and I wish I had simply gone with an electric mower last summer when I was in the market for one.

GREAT price at ACE. Mower came assembled, and ACE even added oil, gas and test started. Used first time yesterday. Easy to adjust height. Mower is a bit underpowered, so if you have long or wet grass, or want to mulch, you may want to upgrade the torque to 6.75 or more. Bagger worked fine, and easy on off. Starts first pull, mows evenly. I hope it lasts as long as other Briggs/Stratton engines I have owned.
