I bought this iron a year ago to replace an old Black and Decker that had served me well for a long time. On the old iron you could manually turn the steam on or off. With the steam on it would create a nice even flow of steam. The new iron is incredibly frustrating to use. I believe the box advertised it as having smart steam. It does not. You could not make the steam on this thing worse if you tried. In fact, the only way I can imagine the steam being this bad is if Black and Decker hired the world's best and foremost steam engineers to calculate the proper amount of steam and then did exactly the opposite. Here's how it goes: I fill up the reservoir and turn on the iron. A minute later it begins to steam just sitting on my ironing board so I begin to press a shirt. Front panel - good steam. Flip to the back and halfway through ironing the steam is just pouring out. So much steam that little drops of water are splattering on the fabric. Slide to a new section and the steam cuts off completely. No steam. I sit and wait for 20-30 seconds and it starts steaming again. Maybe it's a lot of steam, maybe a little, no way to know. Aha! you're thinking that maybe the steam cooled it down too much and now you need to wait for more heat? Nope. If you hit the manual puff-of-steam button you get steam all day. That's right folks, the iron decides how much steam you get and it's a little drunk. Do you want to iron on a patch or anything else that requires high heat and no steam? You get to open up the fill spout and try to shake all the water out. You see, the heat and steam control is one knob. You can't have one without the other. I'm going to throw it away and buy something else. I will not give it away because there is no one I hate that much.

Electrical internals - Planned obsolescence?

By Jaco

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I actually like wrinkles, but my wife insisted I fix this thing anyway. It's her "nice" one apparently. No heat, no power indicator light when plugged it. I opened it up and saw the problem immediately. The power cable wires land at this terribly low quality press-fit brass terminal connection on top of the cord reel assembly. The mating connectors don't even seem like they're supposed to go together. One of them had popped right off it's mate, and the other one was about to do the same.

My expectations for the quality of a product like this are pretty low, but nevertheless I was surprised at the lack of effort put into the design of the electrical connection. It's very fragile. A hard knock could easily break them loose. A soft knock even.

Anyway, for lack of suitable replacement terminals I just decided to solder the wires back to their posts and secure things a little better with a hot glue gun. It's a better mechanical connection, but if you end up doing the same as me try to find high-temp solder. The wires power the heater, and there's a chance the normal stuff could melt and the wire come loose again. I used typical solder, and I've been running this one at max for a half hour and it's still going, but long term who knows.
A right angle crimp connector would be preferable and probably easier to buy locally if you have some pliers and strong hands to crimp it.

(3 x T10 torx screws in the base. Pry off the rubber pads for access. Pull the cord out halfway to get easier access to the hard to reach one. It's through a hole on the handle side of the base, way up in there past the cord retraction button).

Less than one year old!

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I bought this item in February thinking Black and Decker was a trusted brand. Today as I was in the middle of ironing, it stopped heating. The light is on indicating it is getting power, but it will not heat up. I tried changing outlets, cleaning the iron, unplugging and plugging it back in. But no luck! Looked online for help and found many similar reviews of this product. Very disappointed.

We moved to the USA from England 3 months ago and got this iron. We have used it for 3 months, once a week and now exactly as everyone says the light comes on but the iron does not heat up. I am shocked - my iron in England was 10 years old!!! What a piece of junk this is.

I got this iron but it stops working after 5 minutes. I have to unplug it and then plug it back in for it to work...and then many times that still doesnt help. Do not buy this iron, as you will have to spend ten times the amount of time you wanted on ironing your clothing.

Ruined several of my work shirts

By ChrisV

from New York

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I've never written a product review before, but was so disappointed in this product that I had to write one. I don't know if this is a common problem or not, but my iron constantly develops this black residue on the surface almost every time we iron. Sometimes during ironing this residue would start to build up, and it has ruined several of my work dress shirts because the residue gets on the shirt and doesn't come off. The iron seems to always stick to clothes as well. We have to clean the iron several times during each use, and scrap off the residue that builds up. Very disappointed in this product as I have several other Black and Decker products that work great.

RIP-OFF

By Ed T

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

As someone working in the fashion industry, I was recommended to purchase a BnD iron....last year. This iron hasn't even lasted that long, Anti-leak my foot! - the iron practically streams water when tilted face-down!!!, not to mention no longer heating among other faults. I will NOT be recommending this iron to any of my students or co-workers, hope Black and Decker can live with that!

Frustrated

By LaurieL

from Louisville, KY

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I've had this iron for awhile, and I've had issues that I've found ways to work around-like when I first turn it on, I'd have to push the steam button a few times to clear these pieces of what feels like sand before I iron. I always use steam and starch for my husband's shirts, do I assumed it had something to do with the starch. Many times I have to keep a stain remover and white cloth with me because suddenly the iron would scorch while I'm ironing so I have to "spot clean" as I go. But this morning, the last straw. I went to iron my husband's shirt for work and the iron doesn't heat up, although the light Is on, and its dripping water all over the place. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get him a pressed shirt at 6:30am before he leaves for work.

I bought this Express Steam ICR30X about 6 months ago. It worked fine until last week when the plate stopped heating up, even though the "on" light is lit. Even without using starch, the stainless steel plate has build-up. And the self-cleaning feature...doesn't do anything as far as I can tell.

The auto-shut off broke, making the iron useless

By Danny P

from San Francisco, CA, United States

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I bought this iron about a year ago and it was working fine until a couple of weeks ago. After a few moments of the iron turning on, the auto shut off function suddenly turns on, the light starts blinking, and the iron turns off, without ever have reaching a hot enough temperature to remove any wrinkles. I have to keep plugging the iron in and out for it to even get warm, and by the time it gets warm, it shuts off again. This process wastes several minutes out of of my morning and is also very frustrating. I refuse to repurchase an iron after only having it for a year. I Googled and tried to find a solution for over an hour which proved unsuccessful. Very frustrating.
