I bought this iron a year ago to replace an old Black and Decker that had served me well for a long time. On the old iron you could manually turn the steam on or off. With the steam on it would create a nice even flow of steam. The new iron is incredibly frustrating to use. I believe the box advertised it as having smart steam. It does not. You could not make the steam on this thing worse if you tried. In fact, the only way I can imagine the steam being this bad is if Black and Decker hired the world's best and foremost steam engineers to calculate the proper amount of steam and then did exactly the opposite. Here's how it goes: I fill up the reservoir and turn on the iron. A minute later it begins to steam just sitting on my ironing board so I begin to press a shirt. Front panel - good steam. Flip to the back and halfway through ironing the steam is just pouring out. So much steam that little drops of water are splattering on the fabric. Slide to a new section and the steam cuts off completely. No steam. I sit and wait for 20-30 seconds and it starts steaming again. Maybe it's a lot of steam, maybe a little, no way to know. Aha! you're thinking that maybe the steam cooled it down too much and now you need to wait for more heat? Nope. If you hit the manual puff-of-steam button you get steam all day. That's right folks, the iron decides how much steam you get and it's a little drunk. Do you want to iron on a patch or anything else that requires high heat and no steam? You get to open up the fill spout and try to shake all the water out. You see, the heat and steam control is one knob. You can't have one without the other. I'm going to throw it away and buy something else. I will not give it away because there is no one I hate that much.

Great features with lots of heat!

By Dee Dee

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I've had this iron for over a year. Now, I have burned on starch, I guess, that I can't get off with any type of product. On all of my other irons I was able to get it off by dragging the plate on the edge of the ironing board while hot. Now, this plate is no,longer flat. The edges go up & I can't get the burned part on the edge of the ironing board to clean it off because it is not flat. I hate to have to buy another iron because the stuck stuff keeps coming off on my clothes. Not sure what to do at this point.

Can't dry iron with this

By happyape

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I was given this as a gift and absolutely hate using it. You can't turn the temp on max without having the steam on full too and there is no option to turn the steam off.

Cord issues

By Kathryn

from Undisclosed

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I bought the iron about 3 months ago and actually do very little ironing. The retractable cord will not release and extend to an outlet so the iron is now not usable. Anyone else had this problem?

Painful to use!!

By BD fan

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

Bought this iron when my current B&D iron (LOVE!) started having issues. It lasted another year (Woohoo!) but finally died and I brought this one out. I wasn't 5 minutes into ironing a dress when the ridges on the "Comfort Grip" handle were digging into my hand! Finally wrapped a cloth around the handle to finish the dress. See photo. Probably can't return it with a year old receipt so I guess it goes to the thrift shop. Too bad. It performed wonderfully and I will get another B&D to replace. Whoever designed this handle obviously never used it.

Great features

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I bought this iron to replace my former Black and Decker Digital Advantage which I had used over 9 years. But on the first use, the cord did not retract properly. Otherwise the iron works nicely.

Worst iron ever

By Bflies

from Harrisburg, PA, United States

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

Bought this iron last year and am so disappointed. Drags, leaves black gunk on clothes and never fully gets wrinkles out. I have spent more time cleaning off the iron to try and salvage my clothes from black gunk than anything.

What a disappointment!

By lesliej

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I've always thought Black and Decker made good appliances, but this is a terrible iron -- for all the reasons other people have stated. I will hesitate to purchase any more of their products based on the shoddy quality of this iron.

Cord does not retract. Did not remove wrinkles on jeans and leaked. All on first and only use. Now I need to buy another iron! Very disappointed in this product.

poor quality

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

I purchased the Cord Reel Steam Iron approximately 3 months ago. The coating on the bottom of the iron is already coming off! The cover of the water receptacle broke off! I have used this maybe 3-4 times. I cannot recommend this iron to anyone! My previous iron lasted 30 years!

Junk

By martay

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

The not-stick stuff condensed on the iron and now all it does is stick. It does not slide but deposits black junk on my clothes and I iron IN wrinkles.

Cord is too short

By TP235

from The Pas, MB, Canada

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

While the features of the Model ICR06X we bought are suitable, after we opened the box at home we were surprized to see that the cord was only 4 feet long (compared to 7 feet for our earlier iron). After plugging into a wall socket and reaching the surface on a typical ironing board, there is little length left to actually iron anything, necessitating the use of an extension cord to operate the iron properly.

Iron drags

By Penney

from Hendersonville, TN, USA

Comments about BLACK & DECKER B&D Steam Iron With Cord Reel (ICR05X):

Is there something I should know about this iron? I have never had an iron that drags- will not glide smoothly across fabric. I cannot figure it out but if the company knows something I do not, I would love to find out. Otherwise, I cannot recommend this iron- at all. I am tossing it and buying something else. Wish I had kept the box so I could return it.
