This base is a great addition/companion for the offset umbrella. We have had both for a couple of years and are thrilled with both. While it does take up space, it is quite evident from the base of the umbrella that whatever is used to stabilize it will take up a decent amount of space, otherwise it would just topple over. We tried using very heavy pavers (as opposed to bolting it into our patio) but the edges were sharp and really hurt if you ran into them and were very potentially dangerous if a child were to fall into them. This base can be filled with water or rocks and makes the umbrella more stable and i gentler on potentially stubbed toes!

There will always be someone in the crowd that will be unhappy with any product. This base does exactly what it is supposed to do. Sure ... it is expensive here[...] They probably should tell everyone that you need to get the base when you buy the related umbrella ... but just looking at the stand on that umbrella would make you think that it would probably need one in windy areas. If you don't have wind ... you won't need it.

This is a special weight that rolls overtop of the strange base at the bottom of the offset-umbrella shown in the 'Related Items'. Most people buy that offset-umbrella for around [$] at their local Ace only to learn they have to fork out another [$] for this weight, or bolt into their deck/concrete or lay bags of sand/rocks. It reminds me of my Dad who survived The Great Depression in 1930s Detroit doing his immitation of a used car salesman with an accent half-way between PT Barnum and WC Fields saying "So, you want some tires to go with that their car you just signed for? You did see the sign when you came in that said tires not included, right?"
