This is my first grill. I was trying to limit myself to [$] on the grill( not including taxes, LP tank, or other accessories ). There are lots of grills that fall into this category. Many of them have 3-4 burners, a lot of stainless steel, and other popular features. What made me buy the Broil-Mate was the quality and the confidence they put into it with the long warranty. The Broil-Mate is made in Canada, as opposed to China like most grills in this range. It has a two piece very solid cast aluminum oven. Also, it is extremely easy to assemble. It may not look impressive, but I believe this grill is one of the best, if not the best, grill priced under $200.

I had read all the wonderful comments three years ago and looked everywhere until I found this grill. BIG MISTAKE! Took forever to assemble; the flame is weak; I have had to replace the regulator and burner; and the built in thermometer is only about 150 degrees off. Onward has sent me three thermometers with no luck. They replaced the burner and that has helped the weak flame some...I can now get over 600 degrees in less than 30 min. I have added an after market thermo. I guess I got the only bad one they made.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
I primarily cook with charcoal but I still need a good gas grill. After much research I found this Canadian made gem. Good, heavy cast iron cooking grids. Cast aluminum top and bottom oven will not rust away like most modern steel grills. Heavy stainless steel flame tamer is better than porcelain coated steel. Burners are positioned far below the cooking grids. Most Chinese grills put the burners too close to the cooking grids which also creates hot spots.
Handle can get too hot to touch so I wrapped it with paracord. Side burner is severely underpowered, but I did not buy this model for its side burner.
This grill is a throw back to the first gas grills which had tall, cast aluminum ovens.. It does not have the sexy look of newer designs or the BIG dollar brand name but does the job well. You won't find any other grill with its performance, made in North America close to the price of this one.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
I read numerous reviews as most us do before making a decision. This grill caught my eye. I liked the comments about the durability and the different concept on how the burners were positioned. I'm sure I made the right decision. Assembly was easy. The components look like they should last longer than a year or two. (This BBQ is made in Canada and the quality shows.) I've only had the grill for two weeks and have used it 6 times. The heat is even front to back. (The best grill I've had for searing steaks.) This is the first grill I've owned where the front wasn't cooler in the front than back. The burners going right to left and not front to back is probably the reason. The large holding rack on top is very useful. I've already recommended this grill to a couple of friends.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
Seemed to get what I payed for. Reviews say this is the best grill for the money. I still believe it.
The only reasons I took away a star was:
1. Setup was a pain. I had to bend some pieces to get them into place. Not drastic, but still a little annoying. Having a second person helped. Not all of the holes lined up, so bending and "non-straight" bolts were necessary. I also had to hammer through a few because the hole simply wasn't big enough.
2. When I put in my Flav-R-whatever, it had grease spots and food residue on it. My wife said the same thing when she came in and saw it. There was dried specks of food and spots. Personally, I said to myself, "there is going to be food on it all the time." So I played it off, but a less forgiving consumer might freak out. I am hoping the employees just threw a few dogs on there when they were testing it...I thought about adding an image as proof, but there was no way to get it to show up in a picture on the stainless steel surface.
Other than that, I got what I wanted and everyone is happy.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
We purchased this grill last summer at our local Ace. They did not have it in the store, but were able to ship it from their warehouse and we picked it up in less than 24 hrs. My husband and I had no problem assembling it. It's a nice grill and is well made. It's way better than the cheapster Charbroil gas grill we had (junk). The cooking grids are heavy duty. This grill can really bring the heat. It's fantastic for cooking steaks and chops. The flare guards are a big plus. This grill is made in Canada and not [*].

Even though it took me some time to assemble the grill, it is well worth it! I have grilled most nights since I got the grill, and it has not had a problem and the food tastes delicious. The cook time on most things is very short, and who could complain about such easy clean up after you cook. The grates the grill comes with are fantastic and provide a good non-stick surface (although it is always good practice to paste on some olive oil before you start grilling to keep the food from sticking). I LOVE MY NEW GRILL.

I love my new grill.
I cook and bake in it and use the side burner often.
The grill is light enough to move around when needed.
I had a problem with the side burner shelf having the coating bubble and peal; I logged a warranty claim with the manufacturer and was quickly notified a replacement part will be mailed to me.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
We bought this in March, 2010, and I still LOVE my grill. The best feature is the flare-guard that really helps prevent serious flames, even on marinated meats (which is most of ours). We grill everything: steak, burgers, fish, veggies - even whole chickens. The variability of the heat is impressive, and the only issue we ever have grilling is the wind, which can't be helped. This grill also starts easily and immediately every time (unless it's really windy). The biggest problem we face is running out of gas! We use it so much we've gone to having two tanks so we don't run out unexpectedly. Time for a gauge I suppose...
Our grill even tipped over in some very high wind, and the most that happened was the ignition wire dislodged. Once plugged back in it lit up like a champ. So after about 120 uses (in 10 months) it's still our "new" grill and my favorite way to cook. I use it more than I thought I would, and can't recommend it highly enough, even at a much higher price.
We use our grill 2-4 times a week (less in the winter, more in the hottest weeks), and we are diligent in covering this grill because we want it to last. Maybe that's what makes these grills durable? Their owners love them so much they take better care of them!
The "flare guard" lets you grill at very hot temps without the burnt-black char. You get a nice black "sear", but not the crunchy, bitter burnt parts. Another nice surprise is the warmer grate... often this is in the way of the primary cooking surface (so we've always removed them) but this one swings way back when you open the lid, so we haven't felt the need to remove it. And it IS handy for buns or already-cooked-enough food.
You can't find a better grill for the money out there, and I believe you'd be hard-pressed to find a better grill period. Thank you Onward for figuring out how to make this product cost-effectively in North America.

Looked around to replace our old grill (which we loved) that was destroyed in a storm - it also had a cast aluminum body like this one. Was going through withdraw this summer without one. Spent a lot of time researching grills and just didn't want to spend what they wanted for a Weber - and others looked and felt cheap. Actually bought one from [...]that developed rust spots one day after I put it together - didn't even use it! All I can say about this grill is that it's AWESOME! Gets really hot really fast! Great for searing steaks. Heats evenly. I'm probably making my family sick of grilling - I've cooked on it about 4 times a week since I put it together a month ago. In that time we've cooked just about everything steaks, burgers, chicken, brats, italian sausage, baked potatoes, veggies and even a pork roast. All have come off the grill delicious and fast! Big upper rack is great for indirect cooking and keeping things warm. Bottom line - great grill that is going to last!

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
I bought this grill a couple of months ago from acehardware.com. It took me an hour to assemble. I had no problems with the starter. It lights flawlessly. It gets very hot, rather quickly. You're ready to cook in 15 minutes. I've used it for fish on the grate, fish on planks, steaks, sausages, and even smoked a whole butterflyed chicken this past weekend (maintained a nice 225 deg temp for smoking with one burner off and the other on low). I wanted a grill in this price range that wasn't the size of a mac truck, and didn't look like a chrome plated hummer because i Wanted to pay for quality and not size. Frankly, the weber 2 and 3 burner models are overpriced, and made in china to boot. Plus they don't come with cast iron grates, which was one of my requirements. The broil-mate was the solution! Best [$] I've spent in years!P.S. I bought the model without the sideburner.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
The short version, excellent grill so far-I am impressed. Definetly would recommend this but have only used once, but I am very happy. Great even heat, great grates, 5yr burner warranty, adjustable from low to high on side burner.Long version follows;I have only owned inexpensive grills and have always bought them on sale, and never did any home work or research.End result really not great grills with uneven cooking temp, flare ups, and have replaced the grill burners and grates several times in their lives.I did not have the money for a Webber or Equivalent so I opted for the cheaper route.I saw some grills in the $200.00 range at[@] and some $50- 75 0ff as [@].Those reviews had these grills with even temp for cooking but poor control and burner quality. So I decided on taking a chance with this grill. [...].Assembly was not bad, directions ok, but I am mechanically inclinded-took one hour going slow. (the side burner goes in the same side as the tank, the large screw are for the rotissery-not always included with certain models or I did not get mine)Fired it up, no issues started easy, broke it in and cooked about 1 1/2 pounds of 1 1/2" thick black angus on sale 2.99 london broil on med high-about 14 min cooking time. Flipped it 4 times as stated in cooking directions and everything cooked very evenSlight flare ups since I did not trim the london broil, but only the fat got singed.Absolutely an incredible delicious juicy steak-no burns spots from the flame jumping through brickets- with the only slight burnt area again was where the fat was.I will update this when I do more cooking. The stainless steel that covers the flame-does an excellent job at dispersing the heat evenly. The grates are nice and heavy-one side weighed more than my whole grate on the old grill.GripesThe grill handle does get a little hot though, they should have made it a little longer. The frame is a little on the cheaper side, but I rather they put the money into the grates and burner and controls any day, how many time do you roll your grill all over the place?for an inexpensive grill in this price range It can't be beat.

You can't beat the quality for this price. I suspect the frame is the weak link. I didn't enjoy the assembly, but everything went well and it was worth the hassle. Everything else is top shelf and you would have to lay out $500 in other brands and get features you may not need. Basically another $300 gets you a sharp looking grill, not a better one. I love great quality at a fair price and this grill has it.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
This grill is greatly undervalued for its price. It heats up quickly and the heat is evenly distributed. It gets so hot that the lid handle also gets really hot which may be problem when opening up the lid. This is really great for searing those 1 inch steaks. When grilling, an oven mitt is required! Even the side burner really puts out great heat! The construction is actually robust compared to other grill in this price range. The aluminum cast oven is really nice since it's very light unlike cast iron and you also don't have to worry about rusting. One thing I notice is that Ace Hardware is advertising the main burners has heat output of 50K btu but actually, it's 44k btu according to the manufacturers website. But then again, 44k btu is more than enough for that greatly seared steak. For reference, a $700 Weber E310 has 42k btu main burner!

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
The BroilMate LP Gas Grill is a BTU powerhouse for the money. They are somewhat hard to find, but I bought mine at Ace Hardware and ordered the one without the side arm gas burner which I didn't want, so the price was even less (a bargain). The unit is built by Onward Manufacturing Co. in Canada. The grill is designed to quickly heat up and cook on those cold, rugged, windy Canadian winter days.
I have always been annoyed by many grills (some quite expensive) that just couldn't deliver the necessary BTU's to sear and cook steaks properly. With a few minutes warm up time, this grill does just that...with perfection.
A good rule of thumb to determine if a grill is a top notch steak cooker (on high heat) is to determine the BTU output available per square inch of cooking surface. The grill should deliver roughly 100 BTU's per square inch for a hot grilling surface. Make sure the side burner BTU output is NOT included in the grill BTU output information. A lot of grill manufacturers add the numbers together which is a little devious. If you don't need the full BTU heat power, you can always back off to moderate or low heat with the controls.
This is a great grill for the price, although it's not the prettiest thing around. But if you want a grill that will do the job, this is it.
Assembly is a fairly easy job although the instructions can get a little confusing. It takes about an hour to get the thing together.
The high output burner is stainless steel and you can use use just half of the burner for small cooking jobs. The searing plate (no briquettes) is also stainless steel and the cooking surface consists of two very heavy cast iron, porceline coated grates. These should last forever.

Comments about Broilmate® LP Gas Grill (155164):
I wanted an aluminum-box grill (no rust) that minimized flareups, was at least North American-made, had good customer support, and wasn't trying to sell me with premium features and sexy looks. I also wanted fast grilling, a grill that could reach 650 degress, and plenty of space to cook for 8. This grill met all my requirements.
My last grill was under $200 from Fiesta that I've had 11yrs. The only thing it couldn't do was manage flareups very well versus what Weber offered. So, in essence, I wanted my grill with Weber flareup-control and grilling performance. BroilMate fit the bill.
I have this version of the grill without the side-burner. It took me about 50min to assemble. The instructions were clear. Grilling has been a breeze and boy does it manage flareups. No more burnt food for me. As a test I grilled up a batch of super-fatty 1.25in thick Angus burgers in less than 10min. There were massive flames, but the box is so deep and the flames so short-lived, because of the vaporizer bars below, the burger was tender all-around with none of that hockey-puck look. Incredible!
So do your research. This grill's a sleeper. The cooking technology rivals that of anything in the $400 range. It's just not a sexy-looking. Covered during the Spring/Summer/Fall and stored inside in the Winter, this grill should last 10yrs easily.

Just bought this grill and it is exactly what I wanted. Not fancy but at 50,000 btu's, it gives great even heat and that is what grilling is all about - the food. I actually like an occasional flare up for nice outside crunch to a good steak and this grill will do just that with high heat.
