I concur with two reviewers: The instructions for this item are almost non-existent. I did manage to figure out the assembly and installation sequence, and when properly installed, this door-seal ROCKS ... and offers the only real solution to the problem of weathersealing for in-swinging exterior doors. I have not found it particularly beneficial for out-swinging door applications, and would not probably use it there unless a customer demanded it.
QUALITY: I don't believe the manufacturer (Macklenberg-Duncan, for Ace Hardware) has good quality control. About 50 percent of these that I get are defective or break almost as soon as they're installed. The other half, though, are awesome -- and Ace is wonderful to stand behind even its products.
If you have an in-swinging door and can't find a weathersealing solution, try this one!

The only directions are on the package itself, and the only pictures are of a door and a side-view of the installed door sweep. I haven't figured out exactly how to get it to "automatically" flip up when the door is opened. Aside from the door sweep, it comes with five short screws, one longer screw, and one little nylon cylinder. I could use more directions than "Position nylon stop roller on face of latch side door stop...attach with screws provided."

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
The seal was easy to install but did not do the flip thing to seal the threshold when it closed. It was not worth the time or $. It ended up in the trash.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
I just finished installing this sweep and it turned out to be a waste of money (and time). In order for this to be useful, it needs a much stronger spring to fully flip it up when the door is opened. This one will flip up a bit as the door opens, but when you go to close it the bottom weatherstripping drags on the concrete floor and actually pulls it back down. The weatherstripping on the bottom then pulls backwards under the door. You might think I have it mounted too low, but when the door is fully closed the weatherstripping just contacts the floor. If it doesn't at least touch the floor, then why use it, right? I removed it and made several adjustments and nothing helped, so I'm off looking for a real solution.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
I found installation to be intuitive, encountering no problems installing on three doors. In fact, I removed the door sweep from a door being replaced and installed on a neighbor's front door 5 years ago and we remain good friends. Anyone with a modicum of common sense could easily install one of these door sweeps. I fail to understand how anyone would have difficulty. And after nearly ten years of constant use, I have yet to experience a failure of any sort.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
The bent-wire "hinge" others referred to prevents the top of the sweep, the part that attaches to the door, from sealing to the door properly. Even if the bottom prevents air from going in that way it will now go over the top (where the hinge prevents a flush fit) and into the home that way.
Unlike others I thought the instructions were actually fine, but providing instructions how to install something that doesn't actually work, even when installed properly, are useless.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
No instructions. Hinge, which is not a real hinge, binds rather than operating smoothly. Spring is a kinked piece of spring wire that pops out easily and won't reinstall properly, rather than a coil spring that might have cost a few pennies more to manufacture. Totally flimsy piece of junk. Avoid this product!!!

This sweep or at least the one I got will not flip all of the way up and drags on the floor which in turn will push it up alittle. Needs better spring or springs.

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
I use these on north facing condo entry doors with very little overhang protection. Wind driven rains have always been a problem. This device has been a real answer to my troubles. It may take some visualization to figure it out, but to most it will be self-explanatory. The directions could be better, as could the vinyl and spring. I get about 2 years out of these (under severe conditions) and the replacements line right up with my original holes. The cost of replacement is nothing compared to the interior damage I used to repair.
Pros
- Good Insulation
Cons
- Vinyl eventually shrinks

Comments about ACE HARDWARE Ace® Flip Seal Automatic Door Sweep:
Apparently another reviewer had trouble installing this. I use this more than any other sweep design, because (1) it seals better, and (2) as the door is opened, the sweep swings up to provide clearance for rugs, threshold, whatever is in the way.
I would give it a five if the vinyl didn't shrink in length over the years, decreasing the effectiveness of the seal.
