I use the solvent based in my acoustic drum building. I can drill through it, sets fast and dries very hard. I keep acetone on hand to keep it pliable and for clean up. By far the best product on the market. Takes stain well and sands very nicely. Extremely volatile, so keep it well ventilated or use a good mask

Today I bought a tube of this to use to fill some cracks in my deck. As I squeezed the tube, it basically blew up in my hand. It was of no use. I bought the same product about a month ago and it was fine. A year or so ago, I tried the same product in a can. It was dry off the shelf. Years ago, this was a reliable product. Not so much so now it seems.

You also used to be able to get, if I recall correctly, a decent sized tube of the product. All I can find now is around 2 oz tubes.

Wood filler in can dried out easily, even when can was stored upside down. Is there any way to add something like acetone to it to bring it back to a workable paste?

DAP...if the tube is not working for so many of us, you have a packaging problem. If you think it is b/c is old product, put a "use by" date on the packaging. I just bought some at Ace, used a tiny bit one day, then the next day, the bottom of tube broke open...a mess.

If you want your customers to buy your product with a good degree of satisfaction, you need to figure out how to perform right in their homes/business...not make a mess and waste our time.

Comments about Plasticwood 4 Oz. Pine Wood Filler (21404):

The product works well if you follow the directions carefully. Have some acetone, for thinning, on hand. Use the tube only once; there's no way to thin the product in the tube. The product dries out fast and works best if the consistency is close to that of peanut butter. Keep in mind: a thin coat dries in an hour or less, but a coat too thick, greater than a quarter inch, takes a very long time, sometimes days. When applied carefully, the product is strong, finishes nicely, blends nicely, and takes paint well.

Others hate the tube, but I thought it was fine. The directions say to knead it prior to use, which is a must. Before cutting the tip, I threw it in the microwave for 10 seconds -- probably not recommended, but it worked perfectly for me!

Before using the tube, I read the previous reviews on how bad the tube was. I had my $5 invested in it already, so I learned from your experiences. I wrapped the tube in a plastic bag and taped around the top of it, but didn't need to do this since the tube never leaked. I punctured the tube with the cap and then used a ten-penny nail to widen the opening. I pushed the nail through the crusty 1/3 of the tube to the softer middle. Then I applied the product, squeezing (hard) from the bottom of the tube, to force the semi-dry compound into the hole. After a while, some liquid came out with the compound, and I pressed the liquid into the compound with a putty knife, to moisten it. Too much work to fill a little break-away in the wood. But the product is drying satisfactorily now, and I expect to be able to drill the screw-holes in tomorrow, and finish the project. -- My advice: The product is great, but the tube is too difficult to use. Avoid the aggravation by buying the little can and applying the product with a putty knife.

I have used Plastic wood for the last few years and have had great success with it. I typically buy the small metal container but this time I chose to purchase the squeeze tube. BAD IDEA. I have had the same experience as other posters below. The product at the top of the tube was really gritty and half dry. I squeezed about 1/2" of product out of the tube and "POP" the entire bottom of the tube blew out. I had a giant glob of plastic wood sitting on my hardwood floors (wiped right up, so not a big deal, but if I had been on the carpet portion of the floor it would have been a mess). I ended up squeezing the entire tube worth of product out through the bottom into a plastic dish and completing my project, but there was no saving what was left and my project timeline got extremely condensed.

Great product but DAP needs to do some serious work on the squeeze tube packaging.

Opened the container straight from the store and on second squeeze bottom blew out and now I have plastic wood all over my carpet.

The small tube is a joke. When I opened it, it was a bit dry and barely squeezable. As I squeezed more, the crimped end blew up. Initially it was liquid but started drying up. What I could use of it, it was more usable out of the burst end. Not a good product or container.

simple patching of nail gun holes. While squeezing the product from the tube , as others have noted, the crimped end burst open. After using probably 2% of the product, the rest is useless. Expect way better from DAP. Apparently this is a common problem. Will warn off friends.

This piece i used it on is 1950's and shabby chic'd no need for it to absolutely flawless (justifying)....however i was able to build the bottom and fill in this cavity ...the big chunk of wood missing that made this piece ugly is now in the past...just need to do a little more sanding, chalk painting and its as good as the rest of the original wood....smooth as a babys butt :)

I am using this to repair missing laminate on dorm room doors. I did add some acetone to make it more pliable and easier to spread, I am applying it in thin layers, sand smooth and reapply to get desired thickness. So far I am very content with this product, it also helps to apply it to a clean dry surface, after all it is meant to bond to wood.

I filled the gaps with your plastic wood and some of the filling came out after a few days and what was left crumbled. Very unhappy with the results.

I keep acetone on hand to keep it pliable and for clean up. By far the best product on the market. Takes stain well and sands very nicely. Extremely volatile, so keep it well ventilated or use a good mask

This is my second tube. The first was a liquid, or so I thought. I used it to fill in hardware holes, but as I got half way down the tube, the product was really dry. It appears as though the liquid was supposed to be mixed in with the dry material, however, it must have separated while in the store shelf. I kneaded the product before use too, but I guess that didn't work. I just purchased a second tube this morning. Began working on my project, kneaded the tube, pressed the product into the nail hole, and it burst open from the top, aiming for my forehead and hair. I'm just glad it didn't get in my eyes. It's too bad because this product is exactly what I need! Stainable, durable and can be screwed again after it dries. I will give it one more try, but first I will return it back to the store.

installed crown molding that was already stained and lacquered to cabinets. Used the walnut Plastic Wood to fill the nail holes and what a mess. This stuff sticks to lacquer like crazy. Impossible to wipe off. My intent was to fill the holes, lightly sand and then hit with stain and buff so as to not have to re-lacquer.

Now, I have to wet sand with 400 grit just to get the excess filler off and will have to touch-up spray after finishing to get the sheen back.

Any tips on how to avoid such a mess next time? Is there a solvent or something that will take this stuff of lacquer instead of elbow grease?

Today I bought a tube of this to use to fill some cracks in my deck. As I squeezed the tube, it basically blew up in my hand. It was of no use. I bought the same product about a month ago and it was fine. A year or so ago, I tried the same product in a can. It was dry off the shelf. Years ago, this was a reliable product. Not so much so now it seems.

You also used to be able to get, if I recall correctly, a decent sized tube of the product. All I can find now is around 2 oz tubes.
