This is my first experience owning a Hoover vacuum cleaner. For my comprehensive review, I will compare the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450 head to head with the current one I own which is a Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner. The Dyson DC25 has great suction power and the cyclonic technology maintains its no-loss suction. Upon opening the box, the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max needed minimal assembly, the 2-in-one crevice tool attachments goes into the slot and the handle bar/extension wand goes into a slot in the main vacuum unit and you are ready to use it. The vacuum unit is accented with green on mainly dark gray color and the turbo cleaning tool comes standard with the attachments. My thoughts (as compared to the Dyson DC25 All Floors): DESIGN: the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450 sports a similar modern design just like the Dyson DC25 All Floors MINUS the ball. In place of the ball is a pivoting hinge where all the twisting and turning is performed in the unit. Both vacuum cleaners are based on the Cyclonic Technology which was pioneered by Dyson and this technology is suppose to maintain a no-loss of suction in your vacuum cleaner. It is both bagless with a dirt cup/dust bin but Hoover's has a much larger capacity, around 25 percent larger than Dyson's. A larger capacity dirt cup translates to less emptying and provides longer cleaning time. Both have a clear, transparent nozzle/cleaning head where you can see the rolling of the brushes. This is very useful where you can visually inspect if the brush has a lot of debris entanglements without turning the unit over. The Hoover which weighs less than 15.6 lbs is a tad lighter than the Dyson DC25 which weighs just over 16 lbs. MANEUVERABILITY/STEERABILITY: this is where things start taking off for the Hoover. Although Dyson "invented" the ball design where the vacuum's directional path can be changed with a simple twist of your wrist, Hoover created a smooth pivoting hinge where swiveling and turning is SIGNIFICANTLY easier and smoother compared to Dyson's ball concept. There is more fluidity in motion with the Hoover in going over your vacuuming path. And Hoover's weight-to-steering ratio compensates for any kind of over-steering as you twist and turn, push and pull the vacuum cleaner. Since the Hoover doesn't have a ball, it is able to reach deeper in tight places with no interference. Hoover has a no brainer advantage when it comes to the vacuum's reach and maneuverability. SUCTION POWER: this is where the WOW factor kicks in. The Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450 provides a lot of power despite being light. My rough estimates conclude that the Hoover has at least 30-40 percent more suction power compared to the Dyson. I can attest to this fact when vacuuming, the Hoover sometimes SUCKS THE CARPET IN! And I am talking about permanently placed carpets just like the ones in your living room or bedroom. Despite its light weight and this particular Hoover vacuum is geared towards ordinary household use, it gives out industrial strength suction power. Hands down, the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450 beats the Dyson DC25 All Floors in the suction department. And just like the Dyson, it is totally sealed, no dust coming out from the unit. You can tell just by sniffing: there are no "dust-smell" that lingers in the air right after using the Hoover. FUNCTIONALITY: there is an air valve dial in the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450 where you can toggle or re-direct suction power from floor to hose. This is a new feature I have seen in a vacuum cleaner and once this feature is engaged, it gives you the ability to concentrate suction strength to the hose, giving an extra kick for those tight in-between cleanings. MAINTENANCE: both the Hoover and the Dyson are bagless, equipped with a dirt cup/dust bin. After your vacuuming chore, simply detach the dirt cup/dust bin and press a button to release all the accumulated dirt. Hoover's dirt cup is larger than the Dyson's. Both has a lifetime washable HEPA filter in it and a pre-motor filter. Though the claims of "lifetime" are a bit of an overkill, most of us know that filters degrade over time and replacing it would be more of a necessity to keep the vacuum cleaner running at its optimum efficiency. Hoover's owner's manual makes a light reference to cleaning the dirt cup by brushing it down with the dusting tool. This is basically the same with the Dyson. But as with the Dyson, Hoover's dirt cup assembly, including the cyclones inside it are made of high-impact plastic materials. After carefully examining it and since Hoover already makes mention in the owner's manual that this can be disassembled, cleaning it under running water totally dislodges any kind of debris accumulation in the dirt cup assembly. All that needs to be done is to let it drip and totally dry it before attaching it back to the main unit. Now, you have a totally clean dirt cup/dust bin, ready to tackle another vacuuming chore. Both units has a nozzle/cleaning head that is transparent, you can visually inspect the roll brush for debris entanglements without turning the vacuum cleaner over. If the roll brush does have a lot of debris entanglements, both Hoover and Dyson made it easy for the consumer to clean it out. Just turn over the vacuum unit on its underside, loosen a few screws, take the roll brush out and clean it, insert it back, tighten the screws and you have clean roll brush. It is easier to take out Dyson's roll brush compared to Hoover's. Dyson's roll brush can be taken out by just loosening one screw and taking the whole roll brush out while in the Hoover, you have to loosen six screws and the roll brush is attached to a belt that makes the brush rotate. You have to detach the belt before you can take the brush out for any kind of cleaning and put it back in the same manner you took it out. It may be complicated at first glance with all the screws and the belt detachment but you get the hang of it fairly quickly. Many vacuum unit nowadays are manufactured to enable owners do their basic maintenance work to keep the unit functioning properly. Not including motor problems which needs to be serviced by a certified technician, being able to do your own basic maintenance work is cost-saving in the long run. CONCLUSION: before getting the chance of owning the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450, I was very much impressed with my Dyson DC25's suction power. I've owned a couple of vacuum cleaners before and they never got close to Dyson's performance of maneuverability and suction power. This particular Hoover vacuum cleaner just changed that belief. I love how easily you can maneuver the Hoover and the suction power just gives you that deep cleaning with an extra kick. In this head-to-head comparison, the Dyson DC25 just doesn't cut it if we solely base this review on maneuverability and suction power alone. Although Dyson pioneered the ball, the twist steering concept and the Cyclonic Technology, I just can't help but be awed by the suction power and steerability of the Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450. Hoover got that specific aspect of this comparison right down to pat. Hoover's hose is light, bendable and very easy to manage while Dyson's hose is very stiff. Comparing the hoses between these two brands is like night and day. This is one area where the convenience part of the vacuum was well thought out by Hoover. Another thing worth noting is Hoover's power cord is longer than the Dyson's by 5 feet and the Turbo Tool comes standard with the Hoover where it is an option in the Dyson DC25. Warranty is the same for a new unit which is 5 years. If price is a major consideration, a brand new Hoover Wind Tunnel Max Steerable Upright Vacuum UH72450 is 50 percent less expensive than a brand new Dyson DC25 All Floors. WISHFUL THINKING (if the folks at Hoover are reading this): In my opinion (and this is strictly my opinion ONLY), this would have been the best vacuum cleaner ever if they had put headlights on it. After everything's been said, I am now a proud owner of a Hoover!

I just purchased this vacuum with high expectations.  It work great on my dining room area rug which has a short loose pile.  Then I tried it on my living room area rug, which as a dense low pile.  Now, you would think I would be thrilled with the strength of the suction, but the suction was so strong, it clung to the carpet.  I had to put my full strength against it to get it to move.  I was wrestling with the vacuum to get it to move.  There is no rug height adjustment, & the call I placed to Hoover was no help.  I told the customer service rep. that it looks like it will have to go back. She agreed.  I bought this vacuum, because the ads made it looks so easy.  It isn't.  Also, there is no light on the front.

Agitator gear melted

By Mike RD

from Maryland, United States

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

The vacuum does a great job with suction. The detachable extension rod is nice to clean stairs with, although the hose keeps pulling the vacuum body over. The plastic gearing for the agitator brush literally melted into a solid blob. I cleared the jam, but had to chisel out the bearing race and rig up a bushing to keep the vacuum functional until parts can be ordered.

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

There was no paperwork with this model in the sealed box. I went online and just figure out how to register it, but it was a pain! I like the vacuum so far, it was a replacement for one very similar that was only 6 mo's old and had quit. Taking a chance on this one. I hope it works better than the last one.

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

Great suction on this vacuum and I love the way it looks; however, the second I turned it on, it blew out really hot air. I'm not sure if that's normal, but when it's already hot outside, it doesn't make for a pleasant vacuuming experience.

Love it!

By Savannah53

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

I seriously love this vacuum. It is so versatile and does its job extremely well. As a college student, life can get messy, but the various attachment options like the short handle and longer wand allow me to clean harder to get to areas with ease and comfort. I'm no longer stuck using a long wand to clean a shelve or chair that is right in front of me. The short handle allows for up close cleaning that doesn't feel as awkward. Also, the suction on this vacuum is really nice. After vacuuming with the Air, I feel so satisfied knowing that all the tiny dust and dirt particles are off the floor and trapped away.

Disappointed

By Laurielu

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

Pros: -Lightweight -Swivel bottom makes turning corners around furniture a breeze -Attachments on unit -Hose attachment doesn't let particles out -Easy to maintain/clean different parts -Washable filter (not the HEPA filter) -Style Cons: -Price for quality/poor suction for floors (Better suction than my Eureaka for attachments because the seal for the hose seems airtight) -No upholstery attachment (has only one attachment a crevice tool with a bush that can be used or slide out the way) -No automatic cord storage I bought this model more than a month ago. I had been looking at the Air models over 3 years now. I was a newlywed and couldn't afford it so I got a Eureaka instead. The SUCTION was great! It literally would suck up our 3x2 area rug deep into the unit and lift it off the floor. So when I was finally able to afford the Hoover Air I thought the suction would be insane and loved the idea of having a model with a HEPA filter. The suction isn't great, actually it's mediocre. It didn't even match the Eureka and was more than double the price! Unfortunately I prematurely gave away my Eureka so I'm stuck with this since I can't return it to the store because I lost my receipt. I'm so bummed. From the moment I used it I knew I made a mistake. A very expensive one.

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

Loss of suction, Burning smell

By KimberlyW

from Fort Collins, CO, United States

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

Lost suction, burning smell I have had this vacuum for less than a year, and have keep up on regular maintenance... i.e. emptying the canister, cleaning the rinsable filter, clearing any debris out of the spin brush, etc. About a month ago we lost suction on the entire vacuum, and have wasted time and money replacing the belt and both the hepa filter and the rinsable one. Still little to no suction and now it has a burning smell. Very disappointed that we spent all this time and money on a vacuum we were confident would last us at the very least a couple years just to have it break within the first 12 months. Won't be making this mistake again :(

Excellent product. Seriously flawed Owner's Guide.

By adr8

from Ann Arbor, MI, United States

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

I have never seen such a fundamental mistake in a user's guide. The assembly instructions show four parts: 1. Handle, 2. Wand, 3. Vacuum Base, and 4. Tool. The assembly instructions are quite clear, but wrong. According to the guide, step one is to insert handle into the base. No. It seems to almost fit -- but rotates and does not lock. The correct procedure is to insert the wand into the base first and to then attach the wand to the handle. I was ready to return the product until I finally figured out the correct sequence.

Feel the power!!

By AnglWngs16

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

My (other brand) vacuum started shorting out all of a sudden which gave me the perfect reason to replace it. After much time researching & comparing I decided this one suited my needs & preferences best. Great choice! I tend to be a bit OCD when it comes to a clean house, and this vacuum satisfies my OCD tendencies. :) Nice smooth transition from bare floors to carpet, and back again. My only recommendations to those designing this model are: A headlight would be nice AND, a light on the button used to engage the brush to indicate whether its on or off. Other than that, no complaints!

Poor Performance

By Deanne

from Lacey, WA, United States

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

I bought this vacuum about four months ago. I have owned several Hoover Vacuums over the years. I do have pets and keep my home clean. I spend more time cleaning and unclogging this vacuum cleaner! The suction is not impressing me. I have to go over areas three and four times. Even small debris still sits on the carpet after I'm done. Usually, I love Hoover Vacuums, but not this time. My vacuum cleaning job now takes three times the amount of time. Buyer beware.

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

Bought this unit Nov 2015. great suction, learning curve with power brush switch (thought it was broke but accidentally turned it off). Overall satisfied but I notice there's a lot of heat coming from the motor which seems excessive. Will replace HEPA to see if it helps.

I used this Hoover a few days after using my old trusty Kenmore Elite and was astonished by how much dirt was picked up that my old cleaner didn't manage to pick up! Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

I really liked my Hoover vacuum that I bought a year ago. It was a slightly different model, but I loved the design. Unfortunately, it suddenly stopped working, and I never registered the product. Therefore, I purchased a second one feeling a bit apprehensive. I like this product very much and made sure to register it because it has a 5 year warranty. Some of the features I appreciate is how easy it is to switch from the brush rotating to turning it off so that I don't scratch the hard wood floors. I also like the design of the cleaning tool. With a simple click of a button, you're ready to go. I have dogs, so I vacuum a lot. It is fairly lightweight, so it is easy to carry up the stairs. It has a strong suction and thoroughly picks up that dog hair. I would recommend it. I just hope it last longer. Also, I wish it was manufactured in the U.S.. It is made in China.

Same Hoover quality vacuum pick up!

By Sally44

from Elgin, IL, United States

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

My old Hoover broke yesterday so ran right out and purchased another Hoover. I love how easy the Air steerable (model 2400) moves and picks up dirt, however it does not hug the carpet at the baseboards like my old one with the brushes on the side. This required me to use the attachment at the edge of the carpet. The attachments are really not very easy to use either. I was not able to reach the tops of my drapes and had to hold on to the unit because it kept falling over when using the hose.

By Rde1977

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

At first this thing worked great I was very pleased. After about 6 months it's making a lot of noise doesn't seem to clean the floors like it used to when looking on this site for some parts they're out of stock and seem to be high priced. At almost $200 it's not a super high priced vacuum but I don't feel like I should be replacing things so soon. My last vacuum was a Hoover lasted me 10 years and was still working pretty good when I replaced it. At this point I need to decide if I want to spend 50-60 bucks to get it up and running good or just toss it and buy a new one.

Comments about Hoover Windtunnel Air Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH72400):

At first it did a great job. Good suction. Then the 2nd battery went totally dead. The motor head just died and that is key to the suction. For light weight jobs and needs to be cleaned often. Not worth the money.
