Comments about PETSAFE 1016228 Petsafe Stubborn Dog Remote Trainer (HDT11-13910):
I have a very stubborn terrier with a mind of his own. He hates to be left home always wants to be with his people. I solved the dashing out the door problem with the wireless fence collar but the next issue was pulling me all over the street when walking him. I inherited this dog from a friend who couldn't keep him. Love the dog but he wasn't taught any manners as a puppy apparently. A friend who breeds these dogs tells me he doesn't respect me because he knows I'm female and because my voice is too high pitched. He loves me I can tell, but when I try to get some obedience it's like the doggy version of "up yours" most of the time. The first walk this unit made a world of difference, one or two zaps got him to understand that the tone meant he was going to get a zap and the zap comes when he pulls on the leash too hard. This dog doesn't respond to less than level five but this unit can go up to level 8. The fence collar also has to be set to high to get him to understand and back out of the zone. It breaks my heart to hear the yelp when he gets it but he is learning that momma is not taking it no more. The zaps don't hurt them, compare the shock you get when somebody walks across the carpet on a cold dry day and touches you. It gets your attention sort of like a slap with a switch would but it doesn't really hurt for more than a second. I like the concept of the collars because he doesn't associate pain with a hand or an object...it just sort of comes out of the air. I like this unit because batteries are rechargeable and it comes with a dual head charger so both charge at once. The collar has an off switch but the remote doesn't. There are a couple of different modes that change the buttons around and you can add a second collar to this unit if you have two dogs. It is designed to teach commands but right now NO is the big one we're working on, and it's doing the job. The range is around 1200 feet. This guy is such a fast runner that will be crossed in seconds so when I have him outside the remote is always ready. He's been known to slip out of most harnesses, I hate collars because it pulls on their throats, I think I finally found a harness he can't twist out of but all the same I don't trust this wiley little stinker not to figure it out. The unit is great, I've seen a few reports that it quits after a year, I hope that isn't my experience (warranty is one year). The box includes extra rubber charging port doors and screws for the collar and the remote, the units are waterproof without the covers, but it keeps dirt out of the charging ports and that's a good thing. Satisfied, maybe next time I'll look at the mile unit which costs a lot more but you get a lot more range too and that means higher power transmitters/receivers etc.
