The shaft is press board wrapped in fibre glass. I have broken 2 after only a couple of uses each time. The first one sheared inside the fork connection; The second rotates and can't be used. The store doesn't offer a fork with solid wood handle so I'm stuck in limbo returning after only a couple of uses.

I am an avid experienced gardener and have used many garden tools. I bought the spading fork to till my garden and to overturn soil to losen and destroy weeds. I write this upon returning 2 to the store that I bought them and now I am on my 3rd fork. My first problem was that the fiberglass handle cracked at the seam between the fork and the fiberglass shaft. The head of the fork rotates around the shaft. The twisting motion of the head probably caused the fiberglass to receive added stress causing the rake to crack. I returned it. Upon getting the second one, the head immediatly rotated around the shaft with extremely light use (about 15 degrees of rotation-enough to be annoying when picking up dirt) (I used it for aerating my lawn 4 inches deep in very soft soil, not one rock or root.) I returned it to the store saying that this head rotates and does not work. The guy gave me a hard time and begrudgingly gave me the last one on the shelf. There is no pin keeping the shaft from rotating- It is only glue. Do not buy, go with a differnt fork with pins.
