20 years experience with this product

By PDN2

from Massachusetts, United States

Comments about Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain, Smooth Pine, white (01-0801):

Located: New England. Overall Recommendation: highly recommend Detail: Built house in 1987. It has red cedar siding. Original paint used lasted approx. 5 years. Then used different product via professional painter which lasted approx 6 years. Since then I have spray painted my home three times using cabot solid. (Approx. Every 8-10 year!) It weather's very well. Especially north side. North-west and east Gable sides not as well and south facing front well. I wash the house and did the little spot scraping needed before painting. Comparing the Cabot to the previous two major brands used, I highly recommend Cabot and would use nothing else. Also, this last time made decision to change color and was able to have Cabot tinted using the color formular of another brand.

Needed to replace the deck...

By JustDecky

from Gloucester, MA, United States

Comments about Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain, Smooth Pine, white (01-0801):

Our paint store recommended that we use Cabot solid stain on our pressure treated deck. We used Bluestone and had good results for the first 8-10 years with semi-annual re coat needed. After that, the stain bubbled up and peeled off in strips in many places within weeks. We tried stripping, priced out sanding and decided to replace the entire 500 square foot deck surface this year. The railing need to be redone, but it's been about 7-8 years. All horizontal surfaces are a mess. Where it stuck, it really stuck. Baffled with regards for how to proceed. We are considering staining the rails white this time, but what stain to use? Cabot doesn't get much love from me or the internet these days. Which is really a shame - it is a venerable brand.

A DISASTER

By jmeisenz

from Western Springs, IL, United States

Comments about Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain, Smooth Pine, white (01-0801):

Installed new fence late 2011 let it weather over the winter. We insisted the painter wait in the spring 2012 until the fence had dried after rains and it was warm enough, then he used this product. By the next spring, it was peeling and flaking- and since then we have watched it deteriorate to a complete eyesore. Having it restained is now unavoidable- except that we can't just "restain" it- because it is flaking off in giant chunks like paint. The painter who came for an estimate cannot believe we used a "stain" product, much less this one! We are now faced with the enormous expense of stripping the fence and staining it- not to mention replacing all of our mulch (plus the neighbors!) bc it will be next to impossible to spare it in the process of stripping the "stain" that should never look like this. We are beyond upset at the cost of product lost/labor along with the expense of now fixing this issue- and it sounds like we are not the only ones to have this issue with this "stain".

Two coats or one?

By Old House

from Arizona

Comments about Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain, Smooth Pine, white (01-0801):

I was thrilled to get clarity about putting on one or two coats of the Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain over previously stained wood after visiting the Cabot website. It is unclear on the can directions. On the can, in two places in bold type it says "requires a 2-coat application" and is unclear if it means new wood AND previously stained wood. According to the website, the product is a one-coat application. Suggestion to Cabot to make it clear on the can directions.

Easy to apply and really durable

By DanW

from northern Michigan

Comments about Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain, Smooth Pine, white (01-0801):

We used this on our cedar-sided home in Northern Michigan to excellent results. We also used this stain on three small out-buildings we built, sided with T-111 in a fake board-and-batten style. The stain rolls on uniformly and is easy to back-brush. The house is going on 10 years now and still looks great!

This Product Does Not Last

By BrianAF

from Chesapeake Beach, MD, United States

Comments about Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain, Smooth Pine, white (01-0801):

Bought this product in July 2014 when doing maintenance on existing deck. Replaced a few boards, sanded all wood, and used deck cleaner to prepare surface. This product went on great and looked good. Fast forward to May 2015 and the wood has peeled off all over the place on the flat surfaces of old and new boards alike. The vertical faces of railings still looks good, but most of deck looks terrible and people get peeled off latex on their feet if they walk on it.
