Ok here's my review: Just got the unit today from my local Ace hardware which was a smooth process overall. Got it home unpackaged the unit, put six bolts on for the handle, tightened two screws for the throttle, filled it up with about a half quarter of 10w 30 motor oil (which is not included) and filled it up with fresh gas. First pull and off she went. Checked the depth setting to my preference and completed my yard with no problems. Also, this edger has a bevel feature which tapers the top of your grass giving you a fresh look that no one on your block can compete with. I replaced my 25+ year old Mclane with this newer one and wow it put my old unit to shame. So my overall opinion, spend the extra $100 over the stick edgers and wanna be's because this Mclane edger packs the power and will not disappoint.

Unit is easily assembled. Controls on engine for CHOKE, FUEL, THROTTLE, and ELECTRICAL ON & OFF are not marked or marked very well. Had extreme difficulty getting unit to start and run. McLane's Customer service, via phone, provided no help McLane has refused to answer any of my 4 written inquires. Likewise engine manufacture, refused to accept that their product was not well marked and could not/would not give me proper settings for operation. McLane was informed each time I communicated with the engine people, but chose not to enter the discussion. I have one remaining, on going technical issue with McLane.

Comments about Mclane® 3.5 HP Gas Edger & Trimmer (801-3.5RP-CA):
I have had my McClane edger probably ten years and have never had a problem with it. Starts easily with normally one pull, blade changing is easy, controls are easy to use. The only problem is the right rear tire virtually melted for no reason, the rest of the tires look almost new.

Comments about Mclane® 3.5 HP Gas Edger & Trimmer (801-3.5RP-CA):
This edger looks like it will "last forever". Well built, has a belt guard and metal throttle plate now. Engine is OHV - nice touch and has a gas-shutoff. The kill switch is easy to mix up when starting - uses o and -. Edges quickly, but if the ground is unevevn you may miss a little - not its fault. Free shipping to my local Ace was nice. I'm very pleased with it.

Got approximately 350 ft. of edging. This edger with the B/S 550 Series engine does a very good job. Got to pull a few times to crank, but I blame the 10% corn in the gasoling for this. A small engine repairman friend advised me to try fuel stablizer.

this machine is one of the best you will find. I use it to edge my concrete drive & cut flower beds.Craftmanship is second to none.Assembly was a breeze, bolt on handle, bolt on throttle cable, add oil & gas & you are done. The problems with the throttle cable is gone.Stay away from the 475 series engine, its all aluminum,go with 550 series, its got a cast iron cylinder, much better engine.Buy it from Ace,you will have no regrets.Super good people!

In a day and age of cheap foreign made imports McLane still builds a quality edger. This is the power edger you need that you will not find in the box stores. It is well made and operates with ease. I wish they would make the curb attachment standard.

Comments about Mclane® 3.5 HP Gas Edger & Trimmer (801-3.5RP-CA):
I have had trouble with this unit since day one. With minimum help from McLane or Briggs & Stratton I have solved most of these issues. The unit now performs well. Two days ago I attempted to change the blade. I discovered that to do so one needs to use a 3/4 inch box wrench for the bolt at the end of the shaft and a 5/16 inch Allen wrench inserted into a socket in the shaft on the other end. My assortment of Allen wrenches did not fit the socket. I marched off to the store and purchased a new set. I tried the 5/16 inch wrench and it would not fit the socket. I called McLane. They indicated I was the only one with this problem. I was told to press the used blade to the ground to keep if from turning and then use the 3/4 inch wrench to do the job. What I did - I lightly filed the six surfaces of the Allen wrench until it fit McLane's version of a 5/16 inch socket. Another work-around required to make the machine work! Not a good record!
