Comments about Black & Decker(r) Leaf Hog Blower / Vacuum (BV3800):
The unit worked well at first and then broke down after only one season. Upon inspection I found the motor brushes unevenly worn to a sliver of a nub.
It is impossible to find a replacement for them on the web.
I noted similar comments from others as I searched for a solution. The brushes are considered an OBSOLETE part and therefore non-orderable. What do I do now? Trash it?

My biggest issue with this blower is that there is not a good place to hold it with your second hand. I wish there was a handle somewhere on the back or bottom to stabilize.

Comments about Black & Decker(r) Leaf Hog Blower / Vacuum (BV3800):
Bought the LH4500 with the trash-bin adapter to replace a gas blower/vacuum that finally quit after years of use. The LH4500's primary function is to mulch the fall leaves out of my typical suburban-sized yard. Rarely do I need to use it as a blower (e.g. clean out the garage). This past weekend, I got my first chance to put it to real use.
While it does not have quite the same power as the old gas blower/vac (no surprise), it did not clog or jam like the old one did either. The metal impeller is definitely a plus, and the nozzle that swivels back & forth on the blower tube is a great idea.
One thing I don't like about the unit is that it is not balanced, which makes the unit feel heavier than it actually is. This can become an issue when using the unit for prolonged periods.
Had the thing not died on me, I would have given it 4 stars. However, I had almost filled my second trash bin when the unit abruptly quit. It didn't make any unusual noises, nor did I let the magic smoke out. One minute it was on and the next it was off, never to turn back on again. At first I thought I pulled the cord out of the wall, but that was not the case. Blown fuse perhaps? I didn't see any sign of a replaceable fuse so I called the 1-800 number listed in the manual and took it to a local repair center per their instructions. The repair center replaced the unit on the spot, no questions asked.
I'll try the unit again this weekend, but until I am convinced the unit is reliable, I cannot recommend this.

Comments about Black & Decker(r) Leaf Hog Blower / Vacuum (BV3800):
I needed something strong enough to blow out palm tree junk out of my rock yard as the stuff gets hung up under the rock making it hard to remove - this blower did an excellent job - I am 76 yrs old female so not only needed something strong enough to do the job but easy enough for me to be able to maneuver/handle. I also use the Black & Decker Cordless blower for quick clean up on entry/patio areas - love them both. Highly recommend.

Comments about Black & Decker(r) Leaf Hog Blower / Vacuum (BV3800):
Overall this is a great tool. It has the most powerful motor for a non-professional tool I've ever purchased. My good friend swears by it but he has a smaller lawn with just a few deciduous trees. I have, however, two oaks, two tulip trees and one large beech just in the back yard. That's a lot of leaves to manage, but the Leaf Hog blows them easily and quickly into piles. Its moveable end piece is great for blowing leaves out of bushes and ground cover. It's also very easy to change the attachments. The Leaf Hog mulches very adequately but it takes more time than expected because of the diameter of the tube. It also does not create as fine a mulch for what's needed around bushes and trees. A few tips: 1. Make sure you have a container to keep all the attachments together. Otherwise you could temporarily lose them in the leaves when you're switching between blowing and mulching. 2. If you are vacuuming up stray leaves, be sure to lift up the end of the tube, just enough to pick them up. If you stay too near the ground you will pick up too much dirt and mud, which will fill up the cavity near the fan blade. 3. For finer mulching I combine this product with a Flow-Tron Leaf Eater and Mulcher.
All in all, this is a big step up from any older blower and mulcher. I don't see myself buying another one. It is also a "greener" product in that it is electrical and not fuel dependent. You are not giving up that much in terms of effective blowing and vacuuming and you'll feel a whole lot less guilty, especially if you are purchasing wind-generated power from your electrical utility company.
