Comments about Craftsman 4 Drawer Tool Chest (00912728):
I bought this as a set along with item #2297265 in November 2014 because I'd expanded the tool collection in my shop and all of my other chests were full. Since then, I've moved it to my home garage because I purchased another "industrial" set for the shop. This review is pretty much a repeat of that one with one exception.
That exception is, you'll note that in my pros/cons I said that it's BOTH durable AND flimsy. The main body and drawers of this chest seem strong enough. However, the lid has no reinforcement at all on the underside. That allows for a whole lot of flexing when you open it on a corner-there is no handle. I noticed this immediately while looking at the floor model in the store. A quick stroll down the isle with cabinet drawer pulls netted me a 4" long nickle plated handle. I also grabbed 4 small machine screws and 4 lock nuts. When I got the set back to the shop, a few minutes with a drill and some hand tools solved that issue. I centered the drawer handle above the lock and it looks like it was meant to be there.
As for the other stuff...it IS NOT aluminum. I think that describes the main color, which is gray (aluminum ?) powder coated steel with black drawers.
The drawer slides are the friction type, not ball bearing. That isn't a problem for me. My high dollar boxes have them too. Just lube them with light oil a few times each year and they work fine.
The finish is still very nice after over a year of use. I take care of all my equipment though, including my tool boxes! I wipe them down every few weeks with Murphy's Oil Soap.
The only possible negative about this chest is the "external lock bar". The key only locks the lid. If that little piece of stamped steel isn't there, or, if someone bends it out of the way, the drawers will still open. In my one man shop and home garage, that's not a problem. On the other hand, If you work in a shop or factory maintenance department with multiple employees eyeing your tools, it isn't the best security option!
I also added a non-matching 26" middle box for even more storage space. I couldn't find a matching one-even at that big Craftsman tool store. 26" is a standard size but measure before you buy one just to be sure.
All in all, I highly recommend this box to anyone that needs decent tool storage for their home or small shop, at a very reasonable price.
