I found some mouse droppings on my counter this morning, headed out to the hardware store and picked up two of these traps. I set one up and placed it under the sink with peanut butter as the bait, this was done around 2PM. I checked it at 8PM and nothing. I tossed a brick of mouse bait/poison about 1 foot away. Not sure if this is what brought the little guy out but 10min later I heard the trap snap. I thought that this trap would kill the mouse but it didn't... No worries though I just set him free at a park near by (far enough where he won't come back) Anyway, I have never delt with mice before and this was very easy to use and actually worked! Give it a try.

The Home Defense Max Kill & Contain is easy to use and does contain the mice. But consider it a single-use live trap. We bought a package of 2 traps. In both cases, the mice were not visibly harmed. Both mice were alive and able to move and walk, so they did not seem to be hurt in any significant way. (We didn't x-ray for any internal injuries.)
Once the mice were caught and disposed of, we were not able to reset the traps.
If you want a live trap, get one that is reusable.
Like they say...build a better mousetrap...

Love this trap! This trap is easy enough to set. Clearly see when its done its job. Not reusable - Save your energy. Do not squeeze it in anyway when you set it. Mine killed fast and I did NOT use bait. I Simply knew their trail , by the droppings they left, snugged it close to the wall so their was no where else to go.. Whapppp another dead mouse. Perfect for small house mice (grey & white)& very small rats. Wish they didn't cost so much, but, the damage mice do is worth the costs to just dispose of them. Simply wrap up in a plastic bag & dispose trap & all. I am not out to save the animal, they multiply very quickly, and damage everything fast, Mice & Rats bring Real Bacterial sickness to you & your home.

I put both traps out 4 nights in a row. The mouse took the bait out of both, each night, without the trap going off. So frustrating! Had another pack in case there were additional critters, and I will be returning them!

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
First off, I have to say that the Ortho Kill and Contain trap is VERY effective at catching the mice and the easiest trap to set EVER! Having said that, I won't be buying them again...
Each winter when the weather gets cold I get the same type of mouse infestation in the same place in my house, and so far haven't been able to tell how they get in. So I have annual experience with this. The last several years I have used the DCon Ultra mouse trap very successfully. Unlike most traps on the market now days it has a strong spring that kills the mouse quickly and humanely, and a cover so you can empty and clean easily. This year I couldn't find that brand in 3 stores that I went to, and settled on this Ortho Kill and Contain trap - primarily because of the cover.
Unfortunately the spring must not be strong enough, because the mice are caught, but not killed quickly, and that is my primary criteria - don't want them in my house, but don't want the little guys to suffer either. I'm going to keep trying to find the DCon Ultra, or will probably go to a live trap to prevent the suffering.
Easy to use and convenient, but needs a little tweaking...

Bought two (2) packs last night. Took them home, baited them and this morning ALL FOUR had mice in them. So far, this is far and away the best trap that I have ever used.
The ONLY downside to them is the fact that they can be somewhat difficult to clean. (meaning it is not the simplest task to remove the mouse from the trap)

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
Great product and very effective! Just put a small pc. of cheese in the bait side and set. It's million dollar idea...It's just the reverse effect of a conventional mouse trap. It snaps up and contains the rodent while killing it. It can't get out...
The only down fall is you have to slide and hold down the setting button and shake the trap to remove the rodent. Just seems like a more effective way could be achieved, but beggars can't be choosers...
All and all it works well.

the product was easy to use, and very effective. However, it took the mouse close to 2 hours to die, it wasn't an instant death for the mouse. I will look for another product that is safe and easy to use, but I would want it to kill the mouse instantly.

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
First of all, the reason this didn't work when I first brought this home, was my fault!! I didn't read all of the instructions or really looked at the thing before I put peanut butter in it. I only read "put your bait in the mouse well".. so I put peanut butter in the front of the trap, underneath where they walk into the trap.. instead of opening up that little red "bait door". So, once I figured out why are they licking the peanut butter clean, and the door is sticking and not snapping shut, did I really sit down and read the instructions and saw the video online. (For a college grad, I'm totally embarrassed, to say the least!!) Laid in bed last night and heard 2 of them snap, but no mice were caught... so I checked the thing and figured it out that the peanut butter made the door stick the way I had set it... so now I'm hoping to go home today and get that little critter(s).. probably more than 1. Doing it this wrong way, I was still able to catch me 2 mice, so I know it works! And I'm sure that it will work even better now that I'm putting the peanut butter in the back of the thing instead of at the door and under the door. Well worth the money so I don't have to look at them when they're dead. Ugh...

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
I bought a pack of these and they worked fine the first time. When I bought a second pack, the mice would go in and eat the peanut butter. So I wrote a letter complaing that they didn't work. I was told that I should not reuse them and that was probably the problem. So I told Ortho that I had just opened the pack and baited the traps and they didn't work. I sent Ortho a copy of my receipt and they refunded my money. So I bought a third pack and use bacon as bait. I sat one trap down and before I could bait the second one, the first one had caught a mouse. I sat the second down in the same area and threw the first trap out, and when I got back, the second trap had caught a mouse. So I bought a third pack of traps, and they do not work. I have seen mice go in and eat the bait and then leave. So I am going to try the traditional mouse traps. And yes, mice do LOVE BACON. It works better than peanut butter.

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
I tried this product and it did not work well. The snapping was not powerful enough to kill the mouse and it didn't go down all the way. It left enough room for the mouse to live just enough to suffer. It was still alive when I checked it. Luckily I found it quickly and was able to let it go before it suffered too long. It still most likely injured it without killing it, which is not ok. I either want a live trap or a highly effective quick kill trap which seems non existent. Next, I will try a live trap, because I have not been able to find a kill trap that isn't cruel.

I used this product to get rid of some mice that have recently entered my home. It did it's job, in one night it caught and killed a mouse. I didn't attempt to reuse the trap i just threw the entire thing out.
The only con about this product is that I don't believe it is built very well. I brought a pack of two and one of them took forever to set because the trigger on the side didn't want to activate.
Next time I will get some of the other higher rated products.

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
First, I'd like to say this product *is* reusable. I bought the 2-pack and have successfully re-used the product to capture a few mice in my house. For those who believe this trap is inhumane--it doesn't have to be. The trap's intent is not to kill, simply to trap/hold down. Once a mouse is trapped, I take it outside and release the little rodent (I use a broomstick handle to slowly lower the lever--careful or you will spring it back up and hurt the rodent needlessly)--this is an entirely humane way to use the product. Like many others I have a pet in the house so poison is not an option nor would I opt for it if there were no pet--this option is inhumane and messy. This product probably doesn't work for very small mice that might fit through the little food-window but I've managed to catch some pretty small and slender mice that weren't smart enough to use the hole--guess it depends on the rodent's savvy.

I put 3 traps in an empty drawer where I found mouse dirt. Opened drawer this morning to see the mouse looking at me. It looks as though it went through the trap and came out the back bait door. It is alive and sitting on the opened back trap door and seems alert. Now I am faced with what to do now! I am hoping maybe one of the other two traps will work. Certainly not what I expected to find!

i just bought these traps and i'm going to set them up in my attic tomorrow. i need something that is easy to set, and i'm not interested in anything that is reusable from which i need to eject the mouse. i've seen a number of postings which designate that this trap is inhumane. sorry that it doesn't kill the pest (i suppose you could insert some bait that would take care of this), but i'm also GRATEFUL that they aren't left to infest my home or chew my electrical wires and cause a fire. i can live with the fact that the mouse is "inconvenienced" after he was caught. i remain hopeful that this is the solution to my occasional problem!

I bought the two pack and set them both using peanut butter. The bait was licked clean from one of the traps twice (small mouse?). The other trap was sprung but didn't kill the mouse. Since it was still alive, the mouse crawled about half way out the bait door on the back.

Works Great. We have used this product in a motorhome at least 5 - 8 times over a 2-year period and have never had it fail to work. The most recent: last night. Found droppings yesterday afternoon. Love, love, love this trap. Easy to set. Only set once and caught the mouse. Bonus that we don't have to see it. Have little kids and this box stops the curiosity and risk of them seeing what happens with an open trigger. Easily blends in with stuff under kitchen sink. Plus better than the poison so no risk of them dying and laying in the house. Great job Ortho!

We found droppings in our garage so we deployed the old school wood and wire traps. They were licked clean with no catch so we went to Ace for a better mousetrap. We got a pair of these and a pair of glue boards as well as resetting the wood and wire traps with peanut butter *underneath* the trigger. So far we have had two catches, both of which went through a glue board to get to one of the wood and wire traps. These traps do not attract the mice at all...no sign that the peanut butter has even been looked at. Very disappointed in these.

To all of you that think this is inhumane, just think if you had a child that this mouse bit or caused a disease to you or someone in your family, because they can you know. I purchased a package of the Ortho Home Defense traps today. I found evidence of having mice in the house and they typically come in thru the attic. I set the traps and within an hour both traps indicated that they had mice in them. I THINK one of the mice is dead but I'm pretty sure the other one is still alive. There is no way I'm going to pick that thing up and have a mouse jump out at me. I'll have to con a neighbor to come over remove the traps.

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
I bought three packages of these mouse traps and absolutely love them! They are very easy to bait and set. With a normal mouse trap, it would go off at least half a dozen times before I actually got it set. These traps are so easy to set too. You just push down the lever and place it where you want it. Then when the mouse is caught, you don't even have to see it. I had read some reviews that the mouse was not dead inside the trap but all three of the mice we have caught were killed. I love this trap and will never go back to a normal trap. Highly recommended!

Product does not kill mice - just traps them. Had to kill the mouse myself. The reason they say they don't recommend them for reuse is they don't want you to see that the mouse isn't dead. It's just trapped. Just as inhumane as glue strips except the mouse can't move to chew its limbs off.

Comments about Ortho® Home Defense® Max Kill and Contain Mouse Trap (0320110):
Not nearly enough force to be effective. I bought the Ortho Home Defense Max Kill and Contain trap because A) I thought it would be safe to use around my pets (large dogs, small [toy-sized] dogs and cats), and B) I thought it would be a cleaner and more humane way to rid our area of mice.
Unfortunately, the trap does not have nearly enough force to kill the mice... it merely traps them. The first time I tried to release the trapped (I assumed DEAD) mouse, the varmint jumped out of the trap onto my shoulder and escaped down my arm.
The second time, the mouse got stuck but was most definitely alive, and I couldn't shake it out of the trap. Certainly a horribly inhumane method of pest control.
I will be requesting a refund for this and seeking another brand.
