So here it is. I don't write reviews very often but after reading some on Ortho Home Defense here I had to chime in here in defense to Ortho. To those who say mice chewed through the plastic I say, bunk!! To those who say the trap didn't trip, I say that's true. I had some that didn't trip but eventually did. I believe the size of the mouse has a lot to do with that. The ones that didn't trip I set next to another trap. Sorta baiting the mouse. Walks into one to have a meal, thinks yey! and bam get's caught in the other and that worked out nicely. Found that the mouse was quite small. Eventually the traps that didn't spring at first did with larger mice. Some traps were hard to set because the plastic tab on bottom front would barley catch but I got it to catch by using my thumb to pull it over the lip of the floor. It can be tricky but they set. Had two traps like that. So how many did I trap. Well I came across country to take care of my sick mother who used to have cats but couldn't take care of them. So a few years before she gave the cats to other people. When I came home to her old farm house it was frankly infested with mice. I had to get something that would be easy for me or her to set and toss when used and frankly something that worked. The old board traps hardly ever work and for her are impossible to set. Anyone says different has never used them. Over a course of four months we have caught and tossed 25 mice. Yes you read that right 25 mice and they have never escaped or chewed their way out, Not one! So I'm not sure what everyone else here does with their traps but I have bought 14 packs of traps and caught 25 mice and three are still set waiting for mice to arrive which they haven't! That's a 100% catch rate. In the cars I used a different tactic to repel the mice I use a product called Fresh Cab which keeps them out.

The Home Defense Max Kill & Contain is easy to use and does contain the mice. But consider it a single-use live trap. We bought a package of 2 traps. In both cases, the mice were not visibly harmed. Both mice were alive and able to move and walk, so they did not seem to be hurt in any significant way. (We didn't x-ray for any internal injuries.)

Once the mice were caught and disposed of, we were not able to reset the traps.

If you want a live trap, get one that is reusable.
Like they say...build a better mousetrap...

I filled 6 traps with peanut butter last week. No activity- red lever is on set so I looked inside trap and I see that the peanut butter has been eaten and there are mouse droppings inside trap. Last night I refilled traps. Was up late- heard noises in kitchen -tip toed in and actually saw the mouse exiting the trap. I would like to have a refund.

I have used these traps various times over the past 7 years with mixed success. 3 of the 4 killed the mice, the last one caught the mouse, but when I opened the bait door to confirm there was a mouse in the trap and that it hadn't just sprung, I was surprised to see little beady eyes and twitching whiskers looking back at me. EWWW!!! I bought these traps so I wouldn't have to touch the nasty little beasts. I don't know if he will escape from the trap and the trash can before our trash pick up day, but I am not going to try and kill him with another method. I was very happy with the first three that worked exactly as advertised, no mess, no gross out factor to get rid of the mice and the traps are safe to use around pets and small children. I would like to see consistency with the product so I could rely on each one being effective.

Purchased a total of 6 of these at $8 / 2 traps. At $4 each, quality should be high. 2 worked, 2 wouldn't stay set, and 2 stayed set so well the mice went in two times and got the peanut butter (we gave the traps a 2nd chance to work) and the trap never went off. I'd prefer the round spin traps which have pretty much worked every time short of 1.

I have used several of these (10?) with great success. a couple of tips. Chunky peanut butter works best. Also, you need to fill the litte cup and smoosh down the peanut butter so that it cannot be easily snatched out in one piece. I have also had success with smashing down some thread or dental floss down into the peanut butter as this apparently causes the mouse to want to pull out the thread and this makes the trap work better--but once I switched to chunky peanut butter smooshed down well, I have stopped using the thread. I have had no issues with mice escaping out the back.I have tried experimenting with using other types of traps, putting out one of each kind and I have always had the best luck with these traps over the D Con or the old school traps. Other reviewers have suggested that the mice like the little tube to run into? Not sure but Ill keep buying these.

I have been trying to kill the mice for months now. I've tried just about every trap out there. This one however within the first couple days the mouse took some insulation from the wall and made a nest in the opening. I took a picture. I pulled the nesting material out and the next day it had made a new nest inside the trap. I tried all kinds of bait. I'm getting frustrated. Would like my money back, but can't find how to contact the company.

My indoor/outdoor cat aka my personal rodent control specialist passed away this summer and for the first time in 11 years, I have mice in my garage and basement. I set up 2 of the traps with peanut butter and and a raisin in the bait compartment, returned 2 hours later and both had caught a mouse. I set up 2 more that night and the following morning both of those had caught mice. I'm heading out to buy more today. I love that I don't have to see the dead mouse to dispose of it, and that it's safe around my dogs and other cats. I did read through all fo the reviews before I bought it and a couple of people indicated that peanut butter was not effective as a bait, but a few people recommended raisins, so I did both and it worked like a charm. Highly recommended!

I went back to using traditional wire spring mouse traps and got 'em. These traps look nice, but they don't work!

The price was quite steep at $8.99 for a two pack but I figured if it kills the mouse and I don't have to see it and just throw the trap in the trash then it was worth it . . . except that didn't happen! I placed two traps in my cupboard on 2 separate occasions after we noticed there were some mouse droppings, and waited until the next morning to check them. When I did I noticed the lever had flipped to "mouse caught" however, there was no mouse in it. The mouse wasn't killed and it chewed its way out of the trap, both of them!!

A little peanut butter on the red door, pull leaver down and you are ready. It doesn't take long before one gets caught.

I cannot speak to the effectiveness of this product, ie. whether or not it will actually kill a mouse, because neither trap in the two pack will stay set.

The price was quite steep at $8.99 for a two pack but I figured if it kills the mouse and I don't have to see it and just throw the trap in the trash then it was worth it . . . except that didn't happen! I placed two traps in my finished basement, after we noticed there were some mouse droppings, and waited until the next morning to check them. When I did I noticed the lever had flipped to "mouse caught" however, there was no mouse in it. The mouse wasn't killed and it chewed its way out of the trap, both of them!!

For the price, you'd expect it to last more than once

I sincerely wish I would've read reviews of this product before purchasing. In fact, the poor performance/misleading information from Ortho is what caused me to register so I could spread the word. In other reviews, an Ortho representative points out these traps are only supposed to be used once. Which, if it is labeled as such on the packaging, has got to be in the world's smallest font. If this product was, say, $1.50 I'd *maybe* understand single usage, but this piece of junk is nothing short of a swindle. You can't tell me the technology doesn't exist for a trap like this to be used repeatedly, which leads me to believe the parts Ortho uses for this trap are subpar at best. Definitely left a bad feeling, which is arguably worse than the mouse problem itself.

purchased 4 traps placed them in areas mice are known to roam. placed peanut butter in bait trap only to find the mice go in eat the peanut butter and leaving behind mouse droppings in and around trap. Thinking I was doing something wrong I tryed this numerous times they never worked. So I went and purchased old fashion 50 cent traps caught mice with in 1/2 hour and mouse problem has gone away.

I purchased 2 packs (or 4 traps) and placed them strategically where the mice are hiding. In the morning, I awake to partially consumed peanut butter and mouse droppings IN and around the trap. Not one has been caught. In fact, I had to call in a professional exterminator. There is an expression, "You need to build a better mouse trap." Your research and design needs to take this advice literally. Traps are ineffective.

I was willing to pay the extra money over just a plain traditional or sticky trap. In the past couple of months I bought these traps again after seeing a couple mice after the weather turned cold. I finally caught a couple mice and left a couple more traps around in the area where I had caught the other mice. Upon seeing mouse droppings by the traps, I noticed the traps had not been sprung. I checked the traps and found the peanut butter bait had been eaten, but the trap failed to catch the mice. I now have four of these traps which have failed to operate. I've re-baited and left the traps out, but all I'm doing is feeding the mice. These are too expensive for them not to work. I can no longer recommend this product.

Do not squeeze it in anyway when you set it. Mine killed fast and I did NOT use bait. I Simply knew their trail , by the droppings they left, snugged it close to the wall so their was no where else to go.. Whapppp another dead mouse. Perfect for small house mice (grey & white)& very small rats. Wish they didn't cost so much, but, the damage mice do is worth the costs to just dispose of them. Simply wrap up in a plastic bag & dispose trap & all. I am not out to save the animal, they multiply very quickly, and damage everything fast, Mice & Rats bring Real Bacterial sickness to you & your home.

So frustrating! Had another pack in case there were additional critters, and I will be returning them!

First off, I have to say that the Ortho Kill and Contain trap is VERY effective at catching the mice and the easiest trap to set EVER! Having said that, I won't be buying them again...

Each winter when the weather gets cold I get the same type of mouse infestation in the same place in my house, and so far haven't been able to tell how they get in. So I have annual experience with this. The last several years I have used the DCon Ultra mouse trap very successfully. Unlike most traps on the market now days it has a strong spring that kills the mouse quickly and humanely, and a cover so you can empty and clean easily. This year I couldn't find that brand in 3 stores that I went to, and settled on this Ortho Kill and Contain trap - primarily because of the cover.

Unfortunately the spring must not be strong enough, because the mice are caught, but not killed quickly, and that is my primary criteria - don't want them in my house, but don't want the little guys to suffer either. I'm going to keep trying to find the DCon Ultra, or will probably go to a live trap to prevent the suffering.

Easy to use and convenient, but needs a little tweaking...

Even though only 1 of the 2 traps in the package will work most times, when they do work, they work well. I'm disappointed that the manufacturer can't better quality control the product, though, because a 50% defect rate is unacceptable. The high price for the one working trap is too much. I will start buying the old fashioned kind even though I don't like to see the mice.

The ONLY downside to them is the fact that they can be somewhat difficult to clean. (meaning it is not the simplest task to remove the mouse from the trap)

We had 2 of these in our house for about 2 weeks and not one mouse caught (instead we had to keep filling the trap with food). When we tested it, we had to push pretty hard to get the trap to go off - and trust me that would have been a very big mouse!! We went to a traditional messy trap and caught 3 mice in one night. Very disappointed!!
