Spreading super turf builder with weed control on wet grass (as instructed) causes the spreader bar to get wet and then the drop holes clog with the product. I walked 16,000 sq. ft. Of lawn with the spreader set to 5 1/2 as on the product label and my Scott's spreader was still over 1/2 full should have been empty. Wheels need to be larger to raise spreader higher off ground to prevent this problem.

Comments about Scotts® Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader (76565):

Remember to calibrate your spreader. A little pricey but still does the job. Too bad it doesn't come with a ratio chart to tell you how product to use on each setting. Overall descent product.

Comments about Scotts® Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader (76565):

I do not like condemning things, but please note that in my experience you will be lucky if this drop spreader works for longer than two years, assuming that the materials used have not improved since I purchased mine in 2002 having used it 3 times a year. The reason rusting steel. The first failure is the steel bar running through the plastic agitator, rust swells this steel bar up and it stiffens and eventually freezes the drive wheel up, the other wheel is just free running. So for the past 11 years annually I have cleaned the rust of this bar. Don’t waste your time rust treating or painting it as it will wear away very quickly where it passes through the hoppers plastic side, this is a friction bearing and it will rust up again. Finally I think from when it was 3 to 4 years old the plastic regulator shut off bar started sticking. This also has a steel bar fitted in it, corrosion causes this to fail. Rust expanding deforming and cracking it open, causing the regulator bar to stick open. Aggressive reshaping with sandpaper on the unique plastic profile of this bar is a short term fix before it goes to land fill. Very sad. Please tell me you now use just plastic or stainless steel tubing.

Comments about Scotts® Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader (76565):

There was a day when the agitator (toothed rod that churns the material), and the Flow and Shut Off Bars were steel. This was problematic with corrosion. However, plastic (which the Scotts Drop Spreader uses for these parts), has its own problems. The Shut Off Bar deforms under the pressure of the material, and this results in more material dropping onto the lawn, and it results in the spreader staying open when the handle is released, so that product continues to drop. This is particularly a problem with pelletized products. The market needs a well engineered drop spreader for serious homeowners. The shut off should be a separate device from the spreader calibration plate, The spreader adjustment needs to be a positive mechanical setting. All of these parts need to be Stainless Steel. The drop swath should be 24". The hopper can still be a good grade of plastic.

        wheels "gritty" after a while

Comments about Scotts® Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader (76565):

not a bad spreader.... not the best. the wheels "grit up" after a while and oiling doesn't help. this is an issue because the wheels drive the churning mechanism which allows the loaded product to drop when the chute is opened. i can deal with this but one of the wheels on mine is getting quite hard to push...

Comments about Scotts® Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader (76565):

calibration is off as every one of these reviews shows. Even Scotts knows it, they now suggest setting the dial to 8 to check if bar is lined up. Also I find the plastic spreaders hard to follow when putting fertilizer on dry lawn like step 1. also grass has to be short during step 2-4 or else wet lawn clogs up spreader holes. I don't think they want us using spreader but rather their lawn service

Sure wish that I had read the reviews of this drop spreader prior to applying Scott's fertilizer. Like so many of the reviewers I went through a 5000sqft bag in about 900sqft. Calibration is spot on, but product flows through way too fast. Hope to heck my nice new lawn doesn't burn.

Comments about Scotts® Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader (76565):

I have owned the previous version of this drop spreader and loved it. A big selling point of the Scotts lawn products and the drop spreader is you should be able to trust the recommended amount of fertilizer and trust the setting on the drop spreader to deliver it. I read the reviews that stated the poor match of the setting on the spreader to the actual delivered fertilizer. My results today were the same with my new spreader. For Bonus S weed and feed a setting of 5 1/2 was recommended. It is very noticeable that is way too much. I tested for a while and ended up with a setting of 3 to deliver the recommended amount. That is quite a ways off. I rate the "set it and trust it" as poor as a result. However, the spreader is good and does the job. I still recommend it. The calibration nub was was on the mark as described by Scotts, so that wasn't the problem. Now that I know the rate for that product I used, I wrote it on a card and will keep it on the spreader. I will do the same checks on the next product and write it down. If Scotts sorts out the problem I won't worry about it any more. If you want to adjust the calibration to match the numbers on the products you wouldn't have to worry about it. I chose not to do that yet as I do not know if it is a change in granule size that may be causing the problem and that may not be the same with all products.

Bought this spreader after my previous Scott's spreader rusted through. Since this was all plastic figured would never have to worry about rust, however, this spreader spreads at a rate that is over twice the amount suggested by the Scott's settings on the bag. This is very helpful for Scott's bottom line by dumping twice as much product on the ground but it isn't good for the lawn or my wallet.

Love the spreader but trying to figure out the application rates is a little work. I was applying the Scotts Winter weed and feed....the suggested setting on the spreader is 6. However at that rate my bag of weed and feed ( which should cover 5,000 sq. feet) covered only 1,000 sq feet!!!! I had planned to use the one bag for my front and backyard but because I went by the recommended settings I had to buy another bag. So..... reading the application rate on the bag it suggests an application rate of nearly 3 lbs of product per 1000 sq feet....so with that information I set my spreader to setting #2 and got the appropriate amount dispensed from the spreader. A little confusing.....but still love the spreader and Scotts products!

This spreader constantly needs me to bounce it or move it around so that the stuff inside leave to container and get on to the ground. It is a pain to use and whatever is inside does not spread evenly and the grade of descent is not steep enough to have all the product get to the ground evenly. Takes me much longer than it should to use the product as I have to make sure the stuff comes out and does not get caught. Bad design, hard to use and overall very poor.

I purchased the Classic Drop Spreader to replace my Scotts Accu Green 1000 spreader. I wanted to replace the Accu Green 1000 because it doesn't work with grass seed. The Classic Drop Spreader spreads grass seed and fertilizer, is bettero made than the Accu Green 1000, and the larger wheels handle the bumps very well. In addition the Classic Drop Spreader has a padded handle, adding luxury to lawn care!

Since it's all plastic, it shouldn't rust like the old ones did.

The first thing I noticed was the setting adjustment (pretty sorry design) but there is a way in the instructions for calibration. I checked the calibration per the instructions, it was right on. Seems to work just fine

Good accuracy: because it is a drop spreader, I can tell exactly where to begin my next row. Also, I never have to question what spread setting to use because this information is stated on the bag of Scotts lawn fertilizer. Therefore, I never waste the product by using too little or too much. Good time efficiency: because this spreader holds 10,000 sq ft of fertilizer, I never have to stop and refill to finish my lawn. Thanks Scotts!

Since I bought the drop spreader, I have used it four times without any problem. The calibration seems to be right on the money and it easy very efficient for spreading Scotts products. It has performed as advertised and is very accurate on our small lot.

I have used Scotts products and spreaders over 40 years. When the fertilizer formulations changed several years ago, the spreader settings never work for the desired fertilizer distribution. Normally the product goes about half of what it should cover if the spreader is set at the recommended opening as specified on the Scott's product. So, I purchased a broadcast spreader and had the same problems. I have never used any other spreader as it is hard to correlate the Scotts fertilizer bag settings to other spreaders. The only solution I have been able to do is to adjust the spreader settings on the run measuring the spread rate by how fast the product disappears out of the spreader box. I have recalibrated it several times using the instructions on the literature that came with the unit.

Needs a better dispense design to include dumping. Also wheel hubs are too fragile for the application. Release mechanism will eventually rust out before a useful lifetime is realized.

If you are a lawnaholic like me you must know the classic drop spreader is a must for your lawn care arsenal. I live in the city and have a double lot. The classic drop spreader is perfect for the small grass subway area between my sidewalk, and the curb. I use the drop spreader for this area because it goes directly onto the grass, and not onto my sidewalk or street. Using the drop spreader in this area I save more fertilizer for other areas of my lawn, and save time by not having to clean up the excess fertilizer that got onto the sidewalk and street if I used my broadcast spreader. Of course I use the broadcast spreader with edge guard for my large areas. I also use the drop spreader for the small areas around my raised garden, and raspberry bushes. This way I do not get any fertilizer in my garden, or on my plants. This ensures my lawn is green, and weed free around the garden. If you love your lawn, and take great pride and care like I do you MUST have the classic drop spreader to use in conjunction with your broadcast spreader with edge guard.

Two weeks ago I bought a replacement drop spreader and a bag of weed and feed which has a setting of 5 3/4 for the spreader. After about 50 feet I realized it was dropping far too fast and I would run out in less than 1000 sq ft. I took it down to 4 3/4 and it was still dropping far too fast; dropped it 4 - still a problem. Finally took it to 3 3/4 and was through the bag in less than 2000 sq ft. I call the support number and the young lady was gracious enough to refund my cost of the fertilizer, but was no help on why I was having a problem. Then I went on line and found this discussion - who knew that the spreader has a calculation mark! The lady at the support desk never mentioned it. I checked and it lines up perfectly at 6; my mark is in the center, not at one of the edges. I bought another bag of Weed and Feed and set the drop at 3 - it does still seem to be a little fast, but was acceptable. I will make the opening a little smaller next time. There are a number of things that need to be checked to figure out what the real problem is 1. is the calibrated setting at 6 incorrect and the opening should be much smaller than it is at 6 2. is the 5 3/4 opening incorrect for the Weed and Feed product and should be more like 2 3/4? 3. Is the Weed and Feed product manufactured incorrectly and it is too granular I have an unopened bag of Step 3 and the directions on the bag read that the setting should be 5 3/4 - I do not know if the product is more or less granular than Weed and Feed. I think Scotts needs to do some quick research here and find out what the root cause (cute - initially unintended, still cleaver) of the problem is. Then they need to let us know how to fix the problem Until then I will have to use the drop spreader at a very low setting. I am not yet ready to give up on the spreader - and for the amount of money I am not about to throw it away. Scotts response here will determine if I continue with the Scott products.

You have to use a trial-and-error method that could result in significantly over- or under-applying the seed. Make sure that if you buy the spreader, you buy seed that has a recommended setting for the spreader.

The one thing you MUST do is checked the calibration. To do this scroll through the reviews until you find the one with a customer rep. response. This will walk you through the steps to make sure your spreader is calibrated. Otherwise you may dump a bag meant for 15,000 square feet on less than 5000 square feet. Not good. Scotts please make this easier!! I would have preferred to research and find out if this was the best spreader for the money but we live in a small town far away any big box stores so we just made do with what appeared to be the best one at our local Ace hardware store.

After my trusty Scotts spreader finally succumbed to this AZ sun after many years, I purchased a Classic Drop Spreader on 05 April 2014. I wanted another Scotts AccuGreen 2000 because it can get into tight spots but couldn't find one. Went straight home and dumped a full bag on just my front lawn. Burnt the green right out of my grass, it is still trying to recover, lots of water helps. I found the calibration instructions and it was an easy 2 minute fix. My bar was off over 1/4". Now it seems to work fine. I still plan on buying and using Scotts products as I always have.
