I use this generator for camping mostly but also use it for power outages. It always starts on the first or second pull, even after sitting 3 or 4 months. As far as the comment about it locking up after 4yrs. First off you should read the manual it states not to use 40w oil below 40 degrees. It suggests 30 or 10w30. Also you got 4yrs out of a [$] machine. At that price you can but 4 of them to last you 16yrs for the price you would pay for a Honda or Yamaha.

Let's just say the generac recommended repair facility was not surprised when I brought it in with a leak between the carborator and engine. A common trend regardless of maintenance performed. Have had for 9 months and it is strong and powered 2 fridges, a portable AC unit, sat TV and LED TV, and a fan with no trouble. Ran it for 12 hours and then rested for 2 hours. Fuel tank worked great for sustaining the endurance of 12 hours under the load once the fridges caught up to maintaining temps vice cooling. I ran once a month and it failed this June after testing it again. Started with no problems on one pull every time. Just started it to check before fully filling gas and upon return and filling to capacity on fuel it leaked at a cup every 60 seconds. UNSAT. Being fixed now. Don't know any other generators out there but satisfied that it is a good system that my wife can operate since it starts with one pull of the string. Critical on east coast. Total of 10 days without power during the summer months makes like interesting. Best of luck.

This generator was easy to assemble, even during a power outage.

By Bob

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

I had to assemble my unit during a power outage and it went together easily. It seems to be well built and very sturdy. I bought a generac because it had a good reputation, the price is a little high but I expect to have trouble free usage for years to come.

GP5500 Comes through during multiple rounds of storms

By jpk6269sdk

from Indianapolis

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

We have been meaning to purchase a backup generator for sometime now, even doing a lot of research, mostly online, but also asked friends and neighbors too. From the research we did about backup generators, it was always stressed to buy one with a minimum of 5000 watts. We were leaning toward Generac, but we just never made the purchase. Mostly because, when we did lose power, it was short lived. So we thought, do we really need it? Well, that was last year. This year, just after we lost power during one of the nastiest storms to pass through Indianapolis, Indiana in a very long time, we made the decision to get a Generac 5500. We are so glad we did. This month, July of 2015, we were out of power for 2.5 days. Granted the GP5500 has the capability to power our entire home, at this time we needed it to power our Sump pump, freezer, fridge, and a few other electrical devices. Since we had received many inches of rain in June, and now in July, ground water was seeping into our sump pump pit and tripping the pump about every 5-7 minutes. So, we knew we couldn't keep up with hauling multiple 5 gallon buckets of water up the stairs of our basement and out the garage for more than just a few hours. Fortunately for us the assembly and quick start of the GP5500(unit) took less than 35 minutes! What made it even nicer was the power cord that came with the unit. Once plugged it into the unit, and after we had the unit up and running, we could add up to four additional electronic appliances. This is in addition to the four other outlets on the unit itself. Sweet! The GP5500 performed exceptionally in our emergency situation. We had it running our sump pump, freezer, refrigerator, a couple small fans, and a lamp, while able to charge our cell phones overnight. Of course we had to stop the unit to fill the gas tank. We also decided to rest the unit for around 20-30 minutes prior to refueling, and and checked the oil. Over the course of the 2.5 days, we averaged over 9 hours of uninterrupted power! On the last day, when the sump pump was running about every 15 minutes, I determined the GP5500 could have ran 11 hours easy! We have been very pleased by the performance of the GP5500. Although it was a little more money than we really wanted to pay, it was worth the investment. I should also mention, our unit did not have the electronic start, but it was no more difficult than starting a regular lawn mower. So I would recommend the GP5500 for anyone that is on the fence of taking that step toward purchasing a backup generator. Easy setup. Easy operation.

The Generac 5500 was purchased because I live in Oklahoma. Weather and storms can cause power issue to come up year round. I find peace of mind knowing what ever my power situation is I can plan to have a least some degree of a normal household operation.

Power outage

By bt214

from Fort Wayne

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

We had a major storm come thru on June 27, 2015 and knocked out all the power. I was told we would not get power until Tuesday June 30, 2015 at 11:59 pm and I needed to save my freezer food and other medicine so I had to get something quick. There was nothing to be had in the area of Fort Wayne, I had to go to Indianapolis, In to get it. I think the cost is a bit high for the machine. I again lost power on Tuesday June 30, at 346 pm I had the machine running for about 2 hours and it worked good.

We lost power for six days and I was very happy with the job the generator did. It kept my refridge running, TV and DVR player and a couple of lamps. I will be adding a manual transfer switch so if loss power again I will be able to run gas boiler to have heat if needed and hot water.

Excellent product

By DebbyL

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

I purchased this generator during a mass storm in June 2015. We were without power for 4 days - which was lucky compared to others in our area. We used to to power 2 refrigerators & 1 freezer, and one night we used it for our oven & tv. It was easy to set up & begin operating quickly. We were mainly concerned with saving our food, as the weather was cool & we didn't need air conditioning or heat. It worked great - ran over 10 hours on 5 gallons of gas! We ran extension cords to neighbors, and eventually they ran out and bought their own generator. It is easily portable, easy to use, and easy to store for the next time. We now have peace of mind to "weather any storm" in the future.

Outstanding Purchase

By Mike

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

the generator was very simple to set up. Just add oil and gasoline and you're ready to go. I needed this generator in an emergency hail storm situation. Torrential downpours and strong winds knocked the power out, so the sump pumps couldn't run. I had this generator up and running in about 5 minutes. Strongly recommend a Generac.

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

Great machine. Starts fast and does what it is designed to do. One little issue- the pull starter could be moved a little so it's not so close to the handle when starting. Haven't needed it in an emergency yet, but expecting it to provide the power I need when I need it!

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

This product has more than enough power to run our main electrical items (fridge, freezer, water pump, lights, etc.) in our house. We purchased as a back-up system during power outages. The best feature is the peace-of-mind it brings my wife.....she no longer 'worries' about what to do without hydro.

We've have had to use Genny a few times now. Always starts & other than a tight choke lever it's done everything it's supposed to do. Bumbed out that shortly after I got my generator Generac updated my model with weather proof outlet covers, a better handle design and electric start

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

Living out in a rural area, when we lose power in storms or fallen trees/limbs, it does take a while to get it restored. Now with the Generac generator we are ready to protect food in the freezer and fridge. We also have well water and will now be able to connect the well pump to keep water running in the house. With our electric chain saw we can now take the generator to the problem and deal with it instead of having to wait for power to return and hope we have a long enough cord to get out on the property. The purchase of this product has taken a big load off our shoulders and now do not dread the loss of power. We are ready to deal with situation. Thanks Generac!!!

This generator is well worth the money!

By Tina

from etna

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

This generator starts the first time every time I try to start it. I am a small frame woman and I find this generator also very easy to pull around versus other generators we have had and I don't have to depend on my husband to help me move it or to get it started. This generator is such a good generator and very appealing that someone cut a steel cable and stole my first one right out of the back of my truck in a restaurant parking lot and that is why I went back and bought another one to replace the one that the thief found irrestable. So not only do honest people appreciate the value of this generator so do dishonest people.

Lots of power at a great price.

By Seth1978

from Fort Smith

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

I purchased the GP5500 to serve as a source of backup power primarily to keep my mother's O2 concentrater running instead of only having a limited amount of O2 tanks on reserve. It has enough power to run her unit, their fridge, TV and satellite as well as some lights. We will be looking into a transfer switch to make it a little easier to get everything running soon. Well almost everything. Also this will allow me to run my table saw in my shop instead of having to run a longer extention cord out to the shop I can just set it up outside it and I'm good to go. It'll run the saw, shop vac and a shop light.

By oldman

from Maryville

Comments about Generac® 5500 Watt GP Series Commercial/Residential Portable Generator (5736-0):

We purchased this unit because the power in the south goes out and can stay out for over a week at a time easy. we bought the Generac GP5500 Generator because of the durability and the price. This model is the least you should buy for the house( for the watts). This unit came with the 25' cord that has four outlets and that's all we need and that's all it will run. I unpacked the unit, some small assembly required (easy enough) filled the oil and gas pulled the cord about 8 inches and it started with ease. " Now that's a Generac generator " it ran quit and smooth. Thank goodness the power came back on. the unit went to the shed for use later. well spent money on a insurance that we can keep the house going during a outage. (now the power will never go out)
