I just purchased the Briggs and Stratton 7000 watt generator (30470) so this review is specifically about getting the generator home and setting up the generator for initial operation. Will provide another review on operation once I have had more experience actually using the generator. The purchase, pick-up, and setup went extremely well.I ordered the generator on-line through the Ace Hardware web site with no problems and had it delivered to my local Ace Hardware store which is the only option [...] Picked up the generator at Ace and they loaded it into the back of my pickup truck with a fork lift. The dimenstions of the box are 35"L x 23"W x 27"W which should help you in determing whether it will fit in your vehicle. The box weighs about 200 lbs so will need to plan on how you will get it out of your vehicle once you get it home (if you pick it up). In my case, my neighbor and I were able to move it from the back gate of my Ram 1500 to the ground with no problem (both in our mid 50s). Upon opening the box, a Quick Start guide was right on top and provided clear and concise instructions on how to set up the generator for use. The generator purchase includes the battery, wheels (both extra on many generators), a battery trickle charger, and two quarts of 10W30 oil. The only assembly is putting on the wheels and a support leg which went on with no difficulty. You'll need metric sockets or wrenches to do the work (8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 16mm). Opening the box and putting on the wheels and support leg was completed within 30 minutes. Once assembled, was able to move the generator around with ease. It has a swing up and locking handle for this purpose and I had no problem moving and positioning the generator where I needed it. With respect to storing your generator, the final assembled dimensions, including the wheels and with handle stored, are 29"L x 30"W x 29"H. The instructions recommended that the battery trickle charger be plugged in all the time so you will want to consider proximity to an electrical outlet (or extension cord). The battery cannot be over-charged with the trickle charger. The generator comes with the two quarts of Briggs and Stratton 10W30 oil which is a good basic oil for most locations. The better option is to use Briggs and Stratton 5W30 synthetic oil (or other comparable synthetic brands).[...]Lastly, if you will be using the generator infrequently as I am (emergency power), then the instructions recommend using a fuel additive to keep the fuel fresh. I picked up the Briggs and Stratton Fresh Start fuel stablizer while at the dealer. My purchase, pickup, and initial setup could not have gone smoother. Will post another review on starting the engine, operation, etc. once I have gone through the process a few times. Ace was great to deal with. Would definitely recommend this route if you are looking to buy.

Brought home the first one... It worked fine, except for a loud rattling that developed after a couple of hours (I think it was the pull starter mechanism).. Since I was in the aftermath of Sandy, and it was working, I put up with the rattling and used it for about 5 days until my power was restored... When the store got more in stock, I exchanged it for another one.. When I brought home the second one, there was no rattling sound, but it wouldn't run smoothly... I gave it time, but it never stabilized.. And thanks to a non- adjustable carburetor, I had no choice but to bring this one back as well... Couple of days later, I unbox unit number three... It runs great with no rattles, but there is a part missing and the air cleaner housing is deformed so it doesn't sit straight.. The crooked air cleaner is just a cosmetic issue, and I can live with it.. But the missing part is the front support leg which is necessary... By this time, the store was out of stock and I was tired of hauling these around... Therefore I bolted a piece of wood in place of the support and called customer service.. They offered to send me the part... Three days later the wrong thing is delivered.. Now, several weeks, phone calls, and two promised delivery dates later, its still propped up on the wooden block.. Most recently I'm told that the piece is on back order with no estimated delivery date in sight.. All the service reps have been polite, but have given me conflicting info regarding delivery and description of the part itself.. I don't blame them for this.. Though it does make me rethink the company .. This generator, in my opinion, a product of great design and engineering but a victim of poor quality control, cost cutting, and cheap Chinese construction.. The features and price there, it just needs to be screwed together better.. Throughout the years I've bought and still own many Briggs related pieces of equipment.. Until now I've been nothing but happy with their products and hope that they come through for me... I will update this review upon resolution of this issue..

Easy to use

Comments about Briggs & Stratton® 7000 Watt Electric Start Generator (030470):

Bought the Briggs and Stratton Elite 7000 Watt a few months ago. Only took about 45 minutes from box to start. Very easy to understand assembly instructions and operation of unit. Tested the unit hooking up to refrig, two portable heaters, three lamps, 32 inch tv and electric chain saw. Handled everything without a glitch, even when the refrig cycled. I am sure that it could handle more devices. The only con to this generator (maybe all B&S) is the noisey muffler. As recommended by Consumer Reports, wear ear protection while working in the vicinity of operation.

So far, so good

Comments about Briggs & Stratton® 7000 Watt Electric Start Generator (030470):

I have had this generator a couple weeks, and I have only run this generator long enough to check it out and to check out my installation. I have it installed through an outside plug and a six-circuit transfer switch into my house power panel. It has started right up the three times I ran it, and it powered up the lights and small appliances just fine.

They call it Elite for a good reason

By KA1ZZS

Comments about Briggs & Stratton® 7000 Watt Electric Start Generator (030470):

I bought this generator about a year ago {May 2013} In late October 2012 we got hit with Hurricane Sandy we had lost power for a few days. Then it seemed like just a few months later we go hit by Blizzard Nemo in February 2013, and we lost power for a six days, luckily a friend of mine bought a Briggs & Stratton 5,000-Watt Generator after Sandy, when he too lost power. He only lost power for a day and a half by the blizzard so he let me borrow it. His Briggs & Stratton 5,000-Watt was able to run my house plus my mother in-laws house which was a blessing because she heats with oil, plus the fact she was 84 years old at the time. I ran his generator for 6 days straight, only giving it a rest for a few hours daily. We ran 2 refrigerators, 2 TVs, a few lights, furnace, and every so often the well pump when needed. After borrowing his Briggs & Stratton 5,000-Watt I knew exactly which generator I was going to buy. After the blizzard I swore I'd never be without power again and bought the Briggs & Stratton 7000 Watt Elite. It has more bell and whistles than the one I borrowed, 7 gal tank - Electric key start - Low oil shut off - bigger engine and of course higher wattage. We haven't had to use this generator {knock on wood} yet, but I have tested it for the 5 hours just to change the oil as per the manual prescribes, and used the Synthetic oil. I feel much at ease now knowing I'm prepared for what mother nature will throw at us next.

Feature Rich 7000 Watt Portable Generator

By Gizmo

from Branchburg, NJ, United States

Comments about Briggs & Stratton® 7000 Watt Electric Start Generator (030470):

I purchased this generator after Hurricane Sandy and a subsequent Nor' Easter left us without power. I was able to power the sump pump, forced hot air furnace, two refrigerators, several lights, computer and printer, bathroom lights and fans, and television for 24 hours per day for 9 days. My wife even did some wash. The biggest problem I encountered was finding a gas station that had both gasoline and electric and could pump gasoline. What I like about this generator is: - Easy electric starting or alternative pull start (I've used both and it starts right up) - Fuel gauge eliminates guessing how much gas is remaining in the tank - Moderate fuel consumption (I was getting over 10 hours per 7 gallon tank of gas) - Hour meter (I could easily determine when the oil needed changing and how long the generator was used in total) - 4 20 Amp convenience outlets - 30 Amp twist lock connection (I have now installed a transfer panel which will make powering the home in the next power outage a snap) - Ubiquitous support, there are a significant number of Briggs & Stratton dealers in my area This is a great investment!

Comments about Briggs & Stratton® 7000 Watt Electric Start Generator (030470):

Since I bought it, we've never had a power outage. I run it once a week for 10 minutes as recommended, and have changed the oil too. It runs very well, but I haven't had to hook it up to the house yet. A qualified electrician should be hired to install the emergency panel in the house, and the hookup outside the house.

Fully Met Expectations

By IanMac

from St. John's, NL, Canada

Comments about Briggs & Stratton® 7000 Watt Electric Start Generator (030470):

I bought the 7000 watt generator as a backup during power outages. Briggs & Stratton have a great reputation...and there are several dealers in my community. The generator was a breeze to set up and, of course, started instantly. I opted for the 7000 watt model to have the electric start. A pleasant surprise was the 24/7/365 trickle charge feature which ensures a fully charged battery at all times. Another positive is the gas tank cut off switch which allows for running the carburetor dry for longer term storage. I mention these two features as they weren't addressed in the promotional literature I had read! Really happy with the purchase!
