I had spent a week reviewing many different replacement grills for my old Weber. I was thinking of getting a Weber Genesis, but the Broil King Baron seemed like a better value. Over all the materials and build quality seem on par or better than the Weber and the cost was nearly $300 less. I decided to get the Broil King Baron 440. I purchased the grill at Lowes for $499 and decided to assemble it myself. While unpacking the pieces I was disappointed to find that one of the front doors was damaged. I called the customer support number but unfortunately they weren't available on Sunday. I assembled the grill in about 2 hours. It came together easily, and I was happy with the overall build quality, fit and finish. I started up the grill and it fired up on first try. You need to run the grill on high for about 15-20 minutes after assembly to burn off any residue from the factory. Then comes the realization that I had inadvertently turned on the side burner at the same time of turning on the main burners. Unfortunately since the cover to the side burner was down, I didn't notice it until I saw it smoking. There is a sticker on the cover and a warning under the knob telling you to open the cover before lighting the side burner. Common sense, but having the side burner knob on the same control panel as the other burners is going to take time to get accustomed to. Fast forward a few hours later, seasoned the grates and we were ready to grill dinner. My wife starts up the grill and walks away to let it warm up as she gets the steaks ready. We smell burning and realize that she made the same mistake and had inadvertently fired the grill along with the side burner with the cover still down. The stainless steel burner cover is now discolored and brown, and the plastic tabs that lock it into the side table have melted. All this damage on the very first day of ownership. Extremely disappointed in our bone head mistakes but I feel this is a MAJOR design flaw. Its just not an intuitive design. I'm going to contact support this morning and ask to have the damaged front door replaced along with a replacement side burner cover. I'll post an update on my customer service experience, and another update after owning the grill for a year. THe Broil King seems to be a solid grill, and its made in North America. I'm hoping this Grill lasts

I have now owned my grill after spending $500 on it at Lowes (the most I've ever spent on a grill in my life). And slow over the past 4 months of owning it -- each the main burner knobs in turn have melted the centers out. So now I have a grill I have to use Needle Nose pliers to turn on and turn off. Why make the knobs out of cheap plastic? I like to really pre-heat my grill for instant grill marks on the steaks once placed on the grilling surface.

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

I have owned several grills and this is the first grill that has stood the test as when I grill it's for a group or for me to have lunch for the week. I have not had any problems with anything I've cooked. Anything from the basic hot dog & hamburgs to filet mignon. The only thing I have negative is I settled for the Stores floor model and it did not have a drip tray and the bottom pan is bent.

Extremely frustrating to assemble

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

After purchasing this product from a local business we had it delivered to our door. We attempted the very first steps in the instructions and realized none of the holes lined up to attach the wheels. So after a very frustrating and annoying time we got them in well enough and continued on thinking that was the last of it. Nope. We had to buy new hardware for it because all of the other ones were too soft and would shred. Just such a painful experience. It's been sitting half finished for 4 days now because I don't know what to do with it. I just want to bbq some dinner!

flares up easily and grills rusted quickly

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

I bought this bbq last summer and oiled and seasoned the cast iron grills as instructed and before every use but they still rust. I also finds that the burner is quite close to the grill so there are quite a few flare ups that my meat often gets charred. I also purchased a Weber Summit last summer for the cottage and don't have the same rust issues with the grills and also have much fewer flare ups.

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

I grille most nights, and I am very pleased with this grille. It heats up very fast, and it is easy to control the temp. It's easy to clean and the perfect size. I did a lot of research, talked to many people, and really took my time choosing a new grille. I was so pleased with our old one that I did not want to be disappointed . . .and I am not! I am very pleased that I took the time to find the right grille!

I grill 2-3 times a week. I decided to spend a little more because this is my 3rd grill in 6 years. The Broil King has a much better warranty and is just built better. It was a great decision to make the upgrade. It cooks so much better. It is also much easier to clean.

Broil King 440

By Paa1024

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

I bought this grill about two weeks ago and have had an opportunity to use 4 times. I am impressed with the even cooking surface and there are no flame ups. I also purchased the griddle and love it for cooking bacon and fish. My only issue with the grill has to do with the Broil King cover I purchased. It cost 65 dollars and the three days it has rained, when I remove the cover, the top of the grill is wet. It doesn't do a very good protecting against moisture.

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

Had this two summers. Would say only 75% of grill gets real hot. Also we are right on pacific ocean. No rust but...... way too many holes in sides and back. Just dont need that many so this thing does struggle in any sort of breeze. I put sides down everytime to combat this and will rivet sheetmetal to help so i can use the sides. A+ on grilling steaks, just dont try use outer 4 inches of grill like most bbqs.

Awesome Grill

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

Purchased this Beauty a week ago and I am loving it. It looks great! I have grilled on it a few times, Burgers, Wings, Steaks and Veggies. I'm not a handy person but I was able to put this grill together with little trouble, I followed the directions and watched the video which was very helpful. (A suggestion I have would be to add a couple of extra screws. I stripped a couple of them as they were in awkward places and made it a bit difficult to screw in). This baby heats up fast, we had a cold snap last week and I was grilling in the 3 degree weather and the grill stayed hot (I am hoping to fire this baby up in the winter). I am still getting a handle on how to manage the heat, but this q is powerful. I feel that the back of the grill is hotter than the front, so a bit uneven. I have yet to make ribs, so I can't comment on cooking with indirect heat over a long period of time on this grill. Also, I don't understand what the Power zone is on the Dials. Anyone know what they are for? My only issue with this grill is the flare ups but I have yet to cook on a grill that can eliminate them completely. Especially with wings and burgers. I am going to double check to see if I installed the flavour waves correctly. Overall, I am really happy with my purchase. I would like to give it a 4.5 star rating but it will only allow me to choose between 4 and 5. I can't wait to grill again

Painful experience to get it work

By Taju

from Espoo, Finland

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

Assembling and lighting up the grill was a painful experience :( During the purchase at local dealer, sales guy provided some extra screws (for side tables) to us because they have had claims from customers saying that screws out of the box were wrong size. This turned out to be OK for us. However, assembly of the whole frame etc. was so painful. The screw holes were made so tight that I feel like I am cutting new threads to the grills metal frame! I am an engineer and do a lot of handwork, but still this simple assembly took me more than 2 hours. As it was finally assembled ready, I connected it to the propane tank, but it didn't light up. Checking all possible parts and troubleshooting, which took 3-4 hours, it turned out to be the PROPANE REGULATOR that had QUALITY ISSUES. I took it to the local dealer and we tested several same model parts and they were ALL NOT WORKING! To solve this, a substitute propane regulator was given to us. Then it was OK. All in all, after investing two days and driving at least 100km back and force to the local dealer, the grill was finally working. We had several BBQs and feel that the grill itself works OK. It's just all the unnecessary hustle of assembling and changing non-working parts, etc. took all the fun and good experience from the whole thing :(

Delicious steaks

By jbailey13

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

I've used my Baron 420 about a half dozen times since purchase. The manual was a bit out of date. It showed a cross brace inside the cabinet to the right of the tank that wasn't there. I called the store and they told me it's no longer used and the manual was out of date. Having trouble cooking baked potato and steak together. The steaks keep sticking. I tried seasoning the grill before putting the potatoes on but it burned off before putting the steaks on. I guess I'll have to turn the grill off when the potatoes are almost done and let it cool down enough to to oil the grill then put the steaks on. Still a learning curve. Otherwise love it. Got the black version which looks really nice on the deck.

Built well, performance poor

By Monkster70

from Pittsburgh, PA, United States

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

I have owned the grill now for one year and continuously have trouble with flare ups and fires while cooking. The stainless drip guards over the burners seem to hold everything that drips from the cooking meat and finally catches on fire. I literally need to clean these plate every time I use the grill to avoid ruining what I'm cooking. I am very satisfied with how well the grill is built, which is the main reason for purchasing the product. However after the performance of the grill the after the first year I wish I would have chose otherwise.

Great grill, great decision to purchase

By Rob C

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

The grill is the best grill I've owned to-date. Some great features: 1. The grill cooks evenly which is the most important feature. 2. The reversible cooking grates add flexibility and additional cooking surfaces to perfect your cooking style and allow the food to come out great. 3. The push-button lighting system works flawlessly. 4. The overall manufacturing quality is very high. The box is high quality materials, the lid is heavy and well made, and the propane tank cabinet is fantastic. I'm very happy with the grill and hope the burners last as advertised.

Great Features - Terrible Assembly Instructions

By JimmytheGreek

from Sacramento, CA, United States

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

Just bought the grill yesterday and spent over 4 1/2 plus hours getting it assembled. I also had to find new screws to lock down the side shelf and burner shelf because the ones provided were too short and would not work. I had to fasten the shelves in the locked mode, because in the movable mode they were unstable and wobbly. But the worst was the instruction book. Who ever wrote it was not an English speaker - not that there was much in the way of direction or dialogue anyway. I won't buy another of your products without first looking at and evaluating the assembly instructions. This was a very pricey Grill and I am very dissatisfied with the effort of its assembly. I am hopeful that it grills better and lasts longer than how it went together. So far not a fan!

Still trying to assemble.

By TimC

from Union City, CA, United States

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

The assembly instructions were written by the Devil himself. Even the store where I purchased it (not showing in the dealer directory) said that I would be cursing the entire time. They are right. They also said that the tools showing in the book as necessary for putting the thing together are also wrong. Again correct. The book says a #3 Phillips is needed but the screws are square drive. The only thing that worked is a #3 square drive bit (extra cost) in my drill/driver which was also omitted as being necessary. The instructions given are for several models and have no words, just very detailed and confusing shop drawings. The store I went to said assembly on their display took their BBQ guy "several hours" and he had "plenty of help." I have about 4 hours in it so far.

Fit, Finish, and Assembly Are Problems

By Bkhuna

from Merritt Island, FL, United States

Comments about Broil King Baron S320 Propane Gas Grill (921554):

Putting this together is a mess. Holes don't line up well and the cheap pan head screws that are provided will strip out quickly. Why can't companies provide hex head screws? As someone else mentioned, the holes for the castors are very poorly placed. Attaching the cross bar at the front top was the most difficult. I finally gave up and used some stainless steel, self tapping hex heads to complete the build. Instructions should have written directions and photographs because a couple of the drawings are poor. I was a technician on the Space Shuttle, I think I'm pretty good with reading diagrams and spec sheets. When I opened the box and removed the parts, there was surface rust present is several places. There were also places on the lid edges where the coating was chipped and the base metal was showing. Additionally, the finish on the inside of the lid was pretty poorly done with what appears to be the grinding marks not fully covered in the interior coating. The box was intact with no visible signs of shipping damage. Once assembled though, the grill works like a champ. I grill 3 or 4 nights during the week. No problems with performance. I fell for the swan song of saving $300 dollars over it's nearest competitor. My last grill lasted 20 years outdoors in Florida . The Baron may be a bargain, but I doubt it will last five.
