My brother-in-law recommended a similar product which was not available in our area, so I went to the local hardware store. The deck I needed to fix was a mess, with mildew, and no treatment for several years. I followed the directions, and used the recommended deck wash--(just spray, wait and brush off!), then followed with a wood brightener--those gave me almost a new surface to work on. We let the deck dry for several days just to make sure we had a clean, dry surface and then yesterday we applied 2 coats of Deck Correct. I am a single mom and my teens and I redid the deck in an afternoon...Cannot believe the difference--it looks NEW! I used the Deck Correct on the floor and steps, and had Cabot stain matched for the railing. (Just a word to the wise--plan to keep going once you start, as this stuff dries very quickly and it was a windy day here in Mn.)

I was highly skeptical of this product and rightly so since there are a lot of reviews saying this stuff peels off in ~1yr or less. Idk since I put this stuff on my deck 3 months ago. I bought this product on sale and it was the cheapest "stain" I trusted to put on my deck. There are a lot of bad products out there. So I should note that if you are going to put this product on your deck you have to clean, strip, and treat your deck for mold. A lot of vids I watched online skipped these steps. Use the Problem Solver Stripper and Wood brightener it kind of works but you will have do a lot of scrubbing to get the deck surface completely clean. If there is any water repelling material on the surface, Deck Correct will fail almost immediately. I had a few troublesome spots that the stripper didn't work on. I used another brand for the deck cleaner. Deck Correct isn't a stain it is more like a very thick, durable paint. The grit in the product will cause problems if it isn't mixed right. So mix this stuff up with a drill mixer, buy a cheap brush, and buy at least 3, 3/8" nap rollers. The oddest thing about Deck Correct is that it changes colors as it is exposed to moisture even after it is dry. The first time it rained on my deck it turned bright green (I used the color thicket) but returned to its original color once it dried. This continued to occur several times after application but then stopped.

Great Product

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

I have had Deck Correct on my deck for two years. I've had no chipping or pealing. Even after two years all stains are easily removed. I use a solution of M-12/bleach/water equal parts. Spray on then brush for three minutes and rinse. My wife has gardened on the deck for the past two years and regularly grinds potting soil into the deck surface. The deck was built in 2000 and I first used Deck Correct in 2015. Here is how I prepared my deck for Deck Correct. I used two epoxies one watery and the other pasty. I brushed the thinner epoxy in any crack bigger than 1/8 of an inch. This embedded deep in the crack. Then I filled the crack with the putty epoxy to the surface of the board. After the epoxy cured, I cleaned the deck with the solution mentioned above and pressure washed it off. Then it dried for three days. Then I hand sanded the rails with a large sanding sponge. I rented a square pad buffer from a big box store and sanded all the horizontal surfaces. It took longer to rent it than it did to sand the deck. After sanding I rinsed the dust off with a hose. Then it dried for four days. I stained the rails and used Deck Correct on horizontal surfaces only. I've attached one before and a few after photos. Hope this will help someone. I want to thank Cabot Stains for this excellent product.

Problematic

By WTLG

from Los Angeles, CA, United States

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

We should have been told that summer in LA is not the time to apply DeckCorrect (or any kind of paint). Our deck is fully exposed to the sun from 11am to 6pm, and overnight heavy dew soaks the deck and doesn't burn off till 11. We shaded the deck with tarp to cool it down and put on the paint from 6:30pm to 8pm. The next morning the deck was very wet, but thinking it had dried before the dew set in, I walked on it - leaving footprints that went down to the original surface. It was as wet as when it was applied. Now it looks mottled and stained, white and yellow patches have developed - and we still have another coat to apply. If we'd known this was a bad time of year to paint the deck, we would have waited.

My cedar deck is 13 years old and hadn't seen a drop of stain since. Some of the boards were starting to rot (I had to replace a couple of them).

Two coats of this stuff worked wonders. I looks great and so far is very durable.

I'm very happy with this product!

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

First in any painting job preparation prior to painting is key. If you don't prep properly don't expect a good finish. Follow the directions that they recommend. Clean the deck surface thoroughly. sand down any large raised fibers or uplifted areas. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on exceptionally hot (above 90 degree ) days. Do not apply if rain is expected with in 8 hours or so.

Prepare to do two coats. The first coat will bond to the wood and start to fill in the cracks. The second coat will do fill in most of the cracks. When I finished my deck neighbors thought I had either a put down composite boards instead or b just replaced with new boards.

They say the coverage is about 75 sq feet per gallon. That is if you have the worst wood in the world or brand new boards. I was able to do a 15x17 deck with right around three gallons for the floor and steps.

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

At first, I was pleased with the results, but the product makes the deck surface very hot to walk on in bare feet, and after a couple of weeks, and without having put any other substance on the deck surface, white stains started appearing in various places on the deck. I washed them off with water, which temporarily removed the white stains, but then they would reappear in other areas of the deck.

I used the product this weekend and when my wife looked at it, she said "it's orange!" Cedar should not look orange. I need to apply another coat, so any suggestions on choosing a color that is closer to brown (Cedar)? Otherwise, so far I'm pretty impressed with the coverage, look and feel.

I posted 10 months ago about liking deckcorrect and hoping it would hold up after a Minnesota winter and rainy spring. It has exceeded my expectations. It remains a solid surface coating, has held its color, and has sealed the 20 year old green treated deck so that it can last another 20 years. Really nice product.

Bought the paint after prepping deck. Got home and mixed the paint again. The can says to mix often. I mixed the paint every time I poured paint into the pan. That was Saturday this is Monday and it has not dried. It will rain today. Also the morning dew has made a ring around the deck were water dripped from the rails.

Very disappointed that this stain did not last for more than a month. Spent a lot of money on the product and paid someone a lot of money for the labor to stain two decks. It will now have to be stripped and stained again. I would not recommend this product.

      Tough Stuff

      By Honest Abe

      from Arkansas, United States

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

We bought a house with a huge 4 level deck. There was over 400 feet of top railing alone, which was patched and cracked and rotten in places. Nothing had been done to this deck in over 10 years. I replaced all the top rail and half the decking. What decking remained was death valley dry and cracked, but otherwise in good condition. I flipped these cedar boards where they seemed they would be difficult to correct with a paint. I then pressure washed everything and scrapped and sanded all the loose paint. I first painted all the top rail. Since it was late fall when I finished, it sat all winter through one of the worse winters in recent Arkansas history. It has since weathered one of the wettest springs in recent history and the hottest summer (3 months of 95-100 temps). Even where it was applied over old paint that was very well adhered, there is not one spot where it shows signs of flaking. Over one level of decking (8 feet off the ground) I have a 12 foot raised bed garden that drains onto the deck (something I will correct soon with a length of gutter) at least several times a week. I hose that off with minimum pressure on my pressure washer and it comes clean and the paint doesn't budge. If you prepare right; cut in the deck spaces; put it on thick as instructed, and let it dry a few days before heavy traffic, it works like a champ. With any latex paint, you should always wait 1-2 weeks for it to fully cure before putting anything like furniture or plants on the paint.

So Far Pleased with Deck Correct

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

I saw it advertised in Menards flyer and thought I'd give it a try. It does cover well for most part and applies easily. I picked Brick Red as color and did find it is lighter than I would have really liked. Aunt wanted Redwood, glad I didn't pick that. I should have gone even darker to get the real desired color . If it wears for 3 years I'll be pleased.

The Best Product I have Used for Large Deck

      By elminnesota

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

I have a 1,500 sf 20 year old green treated deck that was cracked and never held a stain for more than a year. I just put DeckCorrect on, and so far it looks great, filled in all the cracks and surface after 2+ coats, matched the color chart just fine, and is holding up just fine. I will review next year to see if it has held up, but for now, I would recommend this to to anyone wanting to preserve their older deck without the frustration and failure of stains.

      By TommyMak

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

Our deck is 30 years old and has been sealed every few years. Living in the Midwest winters take their toll on everything. We are planning on selling and knew we had to do something to restore it. This was a wonderful solution to the problem without replacing the deck. We did take a different approach to finishing. We picked a color we hoped would match the 30 year old fence. The solid color of the driftwood grey was to light for our taste. We took Spanish Moss and with a towel went over with a light touch. It brought out the grain in the wood again and turned out to be a closer match to the fence. Love this product and would use it again.

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

My deck was in good shape, foundation wise, but for 15 years, I only stained it every year.I heard mixed reviews on this product. But other products were much more expensive. The cracks in the flooring of my deck were getting large, and had some splinter areas. Some of the spindles of railing that was exposed a lot were also cracking. The other problem I had, were the stairs were really slippery when wet. The sandy texture also solved that problem. People complained in some of the reviews that the texture of the deck correct was like putting on mud. Well, they were right. But that is the point when a product claims it will fill up to a quarter inch cracks. It it did even better than that. I power washed my deck. Then applied two coats, making sure to fill any bad spots. I also used it in areas of my railing where the cracks were large. I covered about 400 sq. ft , with a double coat, with less than four gallons. ( better than the can said it would cover) I wish I had taken before and after photos. But the photos I have provided, will be able to show where the cracks were, but are now closed. I have just put on this product on three decks and a porch. So, I dont have any long range performance of the product. Also, I would recommend, not to use ANYTHING you want to keep, to apply this product. The adheasion of this product makes any pan, brush, roller impossible to clean. I think that is a good sign actually. Also, dont be shocked when you apply. I chose the "Frontier" color, and when wet, It looks like brown mustard. I though OMGosh. But when it dried, the color was more "cedar" brown. ( The first three, lighter photos are the most accurate of the finished color )

      Good news and bad news

      By JSS1

      from Oregon

Comments about Cabot 5 Gallon Deck Correct (05-25200):

We applied this to our deck last summer, following all directions. It went on like a dream. It totally renewed the weathered deck. That's the good news. Now the bad news. After one winter, the finish is lifting in a few places. Not bad: I can fill those. The problem is that the finish is a magnet for moss and weather stain here in Oregon's wet winters. There are green and black stains everywhere. We selected a gray color and it pulls dirt off your shoes bottoms. After less than a year, the deck is functional with a reasonable protective cover but the finish looks like it is 10 years old.
