The Dyson Small Ball (SB)l is the latest model in Dyson's line of compact upright vacuum cleaners, replacing the DC50 (aka Dyson Ball Compact), which was introduced back in 2012 as a follow-on to the DC24. . The idea of the SB is to have the performance of a full-size vacuum but in a compact size. Make no mistake, the emphasis is on compact: the SB weighs only 12 lbs., and has a collapsing handle so it can fit in small storage spaces. The size and weight make it easy to maneuver the SB, letting it get into tight spaces with ease. It would be a perfect choice for a small apartment or dorm room. Or you could keep it on one floor of the house so you don't have to lug your full size vacuum around. . The new SB shares the same overall design with the preceding DC50: it has similar weight and dimensions, with the same size ball and collection bin. It uses the same 2 tier Radial Cyclone as the DC50, with 19 smaller cones that were claimed to "capture more microscopic dust". But that prize would now go to the models with Cinetic Science, which use even smaller cyclones to capture dust so small that no filter maintenance is needed. . The SB does not have Cinetic Science, which means you'll still need to clean the two lifetime, washable filters periodically. The overall machine is HEPA certified, however. . The SB also has the same 11" wide edge-to-edge brush head, with an inline direct-drive motor (no belts to break) and anti-static carbon fiber bristles to improve picking up fine dust on floors. I believe this is the only model with the inline motor and carbon fiber bristles. . The brush head has an active, self-adjusting base plate that floats on the surface, which means that it doesn't require any adjustments to go from floors to rugs and back. The brush motor may be disabled for vacuuming light carpets. . . The SB does improve on some of the DC50's weaker points: . - The SB's cord is over 6' longer, and the hose and wand extend about 2' longer. Together they extend the SB "cleaning reach" to 42', about 25% longer than the DC50. (If you see a claim of 45% longer cleaning reach, I believe that is an error, calculated based on an incorrect DC50 measurement.) . - While the SB's ball appears the same as the DC50, it does have a different filter design, and a claimed 23% increase in suction. The SB claims to have the "most powerful suction of any lightweight vacuum", and while it is less than the full size vacuums, it is certainly adequate to suck up a frightening amount of dirt. . You can really tell the difference in suction power: not only does it capture a lot more dirt and dust than the DC50, it is actually harder to push around on short pile rugs, because the suction pulls the head firmly to the carpet. . The new ball isn't any louder than before, and there are rumors that it is actually 30% quieter. . - The brush head has a mysterious new feature, which may even be new to the US model: a slider that is only vaguely described as a "suction control", which when pushed to MAX, causes a squeegee-like rubber curtain to descend in front. There is no explanation of what this is for or how it would help. . - The final change addresses the number one issue of the DC50: the design of the wand. . The DC50 had an "instant release wand", which meant that you could just detach it from the base, and it came away already extended and attached to the hose, ready for use. (Putting it back was not so easy, however). The problem was that it would pull away locked in the extended position, and at that point there was no way to collapse it. Also, the handle remained attached to the vacuum, which made it top-heavy. All this made the wand and hose awkward to use, especially when trying to clean something closer than 32", or shelves where the long wand got in the way. . The SB has a completely reengineered, reversible wand design. Now the wand IS the handle, and when detached you can easily collapse or extend it. It is a little more work to get it ready, as now you need to connect it to the hose, but this more than makes up for the improvements in ease of use. . PROS of the Small Ball: - Compact size, light to carry, easy to maneuver, stores compactly - Amazing cleaning performance, especially for such a compact vacuum - Latest ball technology with all the parts inside the ball, to lower center of gravity - Advanced brush bar with auto-height adjustment, full edge-to-edge coverage, inline direct drive motor and carbon fiber bristles - Re-engineered wand compared to the DC50 - Longer cleaning reach compared to the DC50 - More suction compared to the DC50 - Compatible with Dyson's wide variety of cleaning tools - 5 year warranty . CONS of the Small Ball: - Small bin size. At 38% of the size of a full-size vacuum, you may need to empty it multiple times during a cleaning session. Fortunately, it is easy to empty. - While the Small Ball does have the 2-tier radial cyclone, it doesn't have the more advanced Cinetic Science. This means you will have to wash the filters periodically to maintain the cleaning performance. - The brush head is only 11" wide, which means it is more work to cover a given area - There is no lamp to illuminate what you're vacuuming . RATING: I give the SB 4.5 stars out of 5. The debits are the lack of the Cinetic Science cyclone and the small bin size.

It is okay. It takes longer than "24" hours for the filters to dry - more like 48 or 72 hours - at least 3 days even if I've wrung them out. Another thing I don't like about it is it will not stay upright - it will click when I place it in the upright position but it won't stay there, it just unclicks itself and falls back down like I was still sweeping with it - very annoying. I have to stand it up several times until it finally clicks and actually stays standing upright for more than 3 seconds. I also don't much care for the stiff pole that is hooked into the hose. It is not really user friendly and very unwieldy to use even when the hose has been stretched out and relaxed. I usually just take the "pole" off and use whatever attachment I need with just the hose and the attachment - no pole. It is too hard to use with the pole attached and unfortunately the hose just doesn't stretch far enough without the pole to reach very far. I do like the addition of being able to take the head off and check for clogs. I just wish there was a way to clean the head and the brush but I have yet to find a way to do that. The suction and cleaning power is very good and am pleased with it. The brush attachment leaves much to be desired - the bristles themselves are extremely flimsy and having the brush attached to the crevice cleaner is a horrible idea! The brush will not stay at the end of the crevice cleaner as it should when in use and it doesn't work well when it keeps sliding up the crevice cleaner. I try to click it to make it stay at the end but it doesn't so I just don't use it - it is a waste. The bristles need to be stronger and it needs to be a separate attachment, not connected to the crevice cleaner. Overall, I am okay with the sweeper - I will not buy another one of this model and wish I had bought the same model I had previously, but live and learn. It cleans well and that's what I bought it for - but just wish the other things mentioned worked well.

I have had Dyson vacuums for about 10 years. I needed to upgrade because my last one just stopped working. Bought this one because it stated that the suction was the best and sure enough, it is. It picks up dog hair like no other. I have 3 German shepherds and this is the best vacuum by far. Hope this will last for awhile.

Comments about Dyson Ball Multi-Floor Carpet and Hardwood Floor Cleaner (206900-01):

I have an older model at home. I've had it maybe seven years. It's an animal but not a ball version. It's been thru a lot and it still works well enough. I will say that the old one seems sturdier then this one. The hose handle doesn't twist when detached like this one. And it's much easier to attach again. And I find the ball motion is a bit hard to get used to. And for some reason my back hurts when using this new one. But to be fair I've only had it for one day. It definitely reaches into corners and under things a lot better than the old one does.

Overall a good decision

Comments about Dyson Ball Multi-Floor Carpet and Hardwood Floor Cleaner (206900-01):

I have one of the original Dyson uprights, which is still working without service, after 12 years. My only reason to replace it was because of the weight. I believe this unit will be as good and probably better technically. My only complaint at this time was that, although I was picking up a large amount of dust and dirt from the hardwood floors and a low pile large area rug, when I switched to the wall to wall carpet in the bedroom area the unit would not budge. Fortunately I called the dyson site immediately and a service representative suggested I take it to the service center in my area. The technician made a slight modification to the brush section to allow more air to mix with the suction and it is now working well. A friend mentioned that she had the same issue and returned the unit. I would suggest that anyone else who might have the same problem, to check with the support team for a local evaluation. It was well worth the trip to the other side of my city.

replacing my old Dyson was a difficult process

Comments about Dyson Ball Multi-Floor Carpet and Hardwood Floor Cleaner (206900-01):

I had the Dyson DC07 which I loved! it could easily handle my 2 large, shedding dogs and a household of boys. I used it everyday. The ease of the had tools lead me to use those everyday, too. I used them for the baseboards, fans, couch crevices. everything. After 9 years of wear and tear a piece cracked off the base which caused only the hand held tools to work. I could no longer use the main vacuum. I searched many reviews on multiple websites on multiple machines. I was back on a Dyson. I wanted one with similar features as the original. With all that being said, Overall I am pleased with my new DC65, but there are a few things I wish it had compared to the old one. 1. the dirt canister is not as big, with one of my dogs being a husky, a bigger canister way key. 2 the cord is much shorter. before only had to change outlets twice, now I have to change in almost every room. 3. It does not lock in to place as easily as the DC07. I have to be more gentle and click it carefully and precisely into place. On a positive note, I have noticed that the suction seems to be much stronger. It is also much easier to switch from bare floor to carpet as the switch is right next to the power button instead of on the base. The ball seems to push around just as easy as the old basic model I have only had my new one for about a week, so there may be things that I adjust to but so far using the attachments seems to be just as easy as the old model. This was a major concern as I use those daily as well. Overall, I would recommend this machine. But I wish the older model was still available.

Powerful and compact

By Anonymous

Comments about Dyson Ball Multi-Floor Carpet and Hardwood Floor Cleaner (206900-01):

This is a great little vacuum, a good compromise between the handheld compact and a full sized Dyson. (I've had a DC14 for 9 years- still works perfectly btw- and I purchased the handheld Mattress edition last year). Before purchase I compared this to the older style compact ball, and I prefer this hose/handle design. For anyone with an older Dyson upright you'll already be familiar with the hose/handle operation. The unit is pleasantly stable when using the hose with attachments. The bin is about half as big as my full sized Dyson, so I have to empty it more frequently obviously but it is so much easier to store, transport and maneuver that I don't mind. Overall, I really like it! What I don't like- this machine ships with a lousy set of attachments. The "combination tool" tries to be both a stiff brush and a crevice tool, and it does both badly- the brush isn't stiff and the crevice tool isn't narrow enough to get in to areas where it's really needed because the nozzle has to double as the intake for the brush. Lame. The separate attachments for the DC14 are far superior. The "stair tool" is small and odd, almost like an upholstery tool but very small. My unit came with three "bonus" attachments that I could select, which is fortunate because without that I wouldn't have *any* kind of floor attachment to use with the hose- the only way you can use this machine to vacuum under furniture or in tight spaces. That is kind of ridiculous, no?! Even with the three bonus attachments I'll probably end up purchasing at least one additional tool to have a kit equivalent to what came with my old DC14. That's pretty lame. I'll also add that it would be nice if there was better on-board tool storage options, as the machine offers two pegs for storage but it can be awkward to use the machine while there are tools attached to the bottom sides, where maneuverability in small spaces is the whole point. Additionally, since the hose extension reverses for storage rather than just folding in on itself, the end that becomes the handle has a wider connector than the end that the attachments are used from- and this means that no attachments can be stored atop the handle like on the DC14. No design is perfect. I offer this feedback mainly so engineering can see it. In general Dyson does a really good job of engineering their products- just remember that when it comes to storage the vac itself is quite compact, but you'll have to allow for storage of most of its tools separately.

This new Dyson replaced my older than 15 year Dyson and not because it died but my original was given to my daughter and it is still going strong. My motto is, "once you go Dyson you never go back." This model is much lighter than my first and I absolutely love the movement and the attachment upgrades. Everything is snap, snap and snap while not missing a beat. The ease of usage in tighter areas is incredible. At the age of 62 I doubt that I will need to buy another in my life time because I am sure this will outlast me! Good job Dyson.

I am more than pleased with the Dyson Ball Animal! Dyson exchanged my previous Dyson product for this vacuum. I am a first time owner of a Dyson product and I can honestly say that at first I was really disappointed. But after speaking to customer service, I am extremely glad that I stuck it out! Customer service was phenomenal! And I got a vacuum that does everything I wanted it to do. It is a little hard to push on my one carpet because it is a very plush carpet, but other than that, I couldn't be more pleased with my vacuum and my experience with Dyson!

This is the first time I have owned a Dyson--I love it! The suction is incredible! My carpet is 15 years old and it has made it look so much better. It is especially good at cleaning the edges of the carpet by the walls. I love the ease of the turns with the Dyson. I also enjoy seeing how much I have suctioned up when I empty the container! I have to admit, there was a learning curve with using the hose--it works great, it is just different they way it lifts off the handle. I am very pleased and am so glad I purchased a Dyson! I am looking forward to many years of great service from my new machine.

I actually enjoy running the sweeper with my new Dyson Ball Animal. My husband & I have 2 teenage daughters at home, and including myself, that makes 3 thick & long haired ladies in the house. Oh , we also have 2 German Shepherds inside and they are also a bit hairy, haha. I am truly amazed at the amount of hair & dirt I get off of my floors. I always dump my canister every time I use it so I can start fresh each time I vacuum . I love the way Dyson stands behind their product.

This is the second, exact same Dyson I have owned. The reason? It's tough, durable and handles any type of floor surface well. This is much better for those wanting to pick up PET HAIR, as it's suction is superior to the pet hair model. My floors have never been so clean, the dirt it brings up out of carpet makes this a dream. My only suggestion? Make the cord about three feet longer. Well worth the $$$$ you pay! Dynamite, great bang for the buck!

From start to finish this has the most complete and easy to assemble of any of the many vacuums I've purchased. 4 Steps and it goes together in 5 minutes. The extension tube that aloes you to do stairs and drapes very long and flexible like none I have ever seen. It comes with a long electrical cord and plug, I never have to stop and re plug in the cord. The power of the vacuum is very strong and that makes the job fast and easy. the Dyson is very easy to handle and very easy to get into tough spots. No bag to empty, it does hard wood floors and carpet at the touch of the switch. Picks up cat hair with one sweep. We are older and have never had a vacuum as easy to use.

Good: maneuverability, weight, direct drive beater bar, and incredible suction. Not so good: difficulty getting sweeper into upright locked position and the hose attachment set up may be an engineering marvel but it's pretty much unusable due to having to have the hard tube extended and the suction is so strong, one can hardly extend the flexible part of the hose.

#14 or 15 Dyson I've bought, not sure!

Comments about Dyson Ball Multi-Floor Carpet and Hardwood Floor Cleaner (206900-01):

We have 2 homes that are multi-level and used to also have a motorhome, so I have Dyson, as we call them at our house, of some sort on every level in both homes. I just bought this vacuum for my sewing room, retiring the DC24 I had in our motorhome for my sewing room as a dust collector for my dust producing woodworking machines. Bringing the grand total of Dysons I've bought in the last 10 yrs to 14 or 15 , not sure, They just keep getting better and only one has needed to be serviced. My housekeeper says she's having a love affair with the one she uses and my 12 yr old son likes to vacuum while riding his hover board, we call it hover-hoovering! I sent the video to Dyson, thought they might be looking for new commercial material. I mean how could you go wrong on that one, kids seeing a kid on tv advertising a vacuum cleaner by vacuuming while riding a hover board? Moms would have to think it was genius, all they'd have to do is buy a Dyson and a hover board then sit back and do nothing more than lift their legs so they could be vacuumed under. Anyway, great vacuums. Lots of $$$ upfront, but pays off in the long run.
