What You'll Need:

  • Clark+Kensington® Paint and Primer; 1 gallon for the base coat/1 quart each for the remaining 3 colors (select 4 different colors ranging from a light tone to a dark tone)
  • Angled paintbrushes
  • Roller covers and frames (a mix of both 9-inch and mini rollers recommended)
  • Paint trays and liners
  • Drop cloth
  • Painter's tape
  • Stir stick
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Step stool
  • Spackle or joint compound
  • Putty knife
  • Sandpaper

First and foremost, proper prep work is key to making your project a success. Start by patching any imperfections in your wall and sanding them smooth. Next, tape wood trim, ceiling and other exposed areas to protect from drips and spatter. Then apply your base coat Before the Storm EXTCC-53, cutting in the area to be painted with a brush and then rolling on the rest. Don't forget to let it dry thoroughly before you start laying out the pattern.

To make your patchwork pattern, mark each side of the wall in 12-inch increments, starting at the top and working your way down, then tape horizontal lines from edge to edge.

Helpful Tip:

A laser level makes this task nice and easy - just lay the tape down along the red line, set the seam with a swipe from a wet rag and you're ready to paint the first set of stripes.

Now take your second darkest color Charcoal Cashmere N-C14, cut into the sides of the stripes with an angled paintbrush and then roll in between, using two coats. Don't forget to only paint every other stripe and leave the others the base color. You want to remove the tape before the paint dries so that you don't take off any of the paint. It is cleaner if you remove before it dries. Once the tape is off, let paint dry overnight.

Next come the vertical stripes. Use the laser level to lay down nice straight tape lines, measuring 12 inches between each. Then take your third darkest color Black Chiffon N-C15 and, like before, cut in the edges with a brush, fill in the space between with the roller and pull the tape off before the paint starts to dry.

Last but not least, block off the intersections of the lines with tape to make a nice square, making sure you slightly overlap the lighter colors. Roll on the darkest color Midnight Stroll N-C16 to fill the space, and you're done!

Now all that's left is to remove the last of the tape, step back and admire your work. You'll be amazed by how great it looks - all it takes is the right paint and some expert advice from Ace... the helpful place!
