How Often to Change Lawn Mower Oil

Your lawn mower’s oil should be changed about once a year, or every 50 hours of use, and can be done easily at home. Learning how to do some basic maintenance on your lawn mower can save some money and keep your equipment starting smoothly. How to Change Oil in Your Lawn Mower

Step 1 Run Engine

Begin by running the engine until it’s warm to help drain more oil. Then, turn off the mower.

Step 2 Disconnect Spark Plug

Before you begin any gas mower maintenance, always disconnect the spark plug and secure it off to the side so it won’t start accidentally.

Step 3 Remove Cap

Clean around the oil cap so debris won’t get into the crankcase before you remove the cap.

Step 4 Drain Oil

Tilt the mower on its side and drain the oil into a pan. Tilt the mower with the oil side down and the air filter up. If your mower has a drain plug on the mower deck, you can drain the oil out the bottom. Then, replace the drain plug.

Step 5 Refill Oil

Re-fill the engine with the type of oil the manufacturer recommends. Stop when it reaches the FULL mark on the dipstick. Don’t overfill it.

Step 6 Replace Cap

Replace the oil cap to finish the job!
