Ace Foundation

At Ace, we pride ourselves on being the helpful place. And what better way to help than to give back to our local communities and those in need? The Ace Foundation has raised over $64 million since 1991 to help sick and injured kids through our partnership with Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. We also support the American Red Cross Natural Disaster Relief Fund through volunteer hours and donations of products needed when a disaster strikes.

There are many ways that our Ace stores support CMN Hospitals. Whether your local Ace store participates in the icon and/or bucket promotion, has a change canister at the register, or hosts a fundraising event, 100 percent of the money raised at that store will stay in that specific community, benefiting the closest CMN Hospital. So stop in your local store or donate online by clicking on the "Donate Now" button.

As part of Ace's fundraising efforts, each year an official national Ace All-Star is chosen to serve as ambassador for Ace's fundraising programs across the country. The 2015 Ace All-Star is Parker Grelecki, a lifelong patient at his local CMN Hospital, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Look for photos of Parker in your local store this year.

Meet Parker, our 2015 Ace All-Star

Parker Grelecki was born on September 9, 2008, with hydrocephalus, or excess fluid on the brain. Parker's parents received the diagnosis at 20 weeks in the pregnancy that there was a blockage between the third and fourth ventricles of Parker's brain, which was preventing the cerebrospinal fluid from draining into the body. As a result, the fluid would build up and compress Parker's brain matter against his skull, making it almost non-existent, threatening to severely hinder Parker's early neurological development. At birth, the average baby has 90-95% brain matter and 5-10% fluid within the cranial cavity; Parker had over 98% fluid and less than 2% brain matter, amounting to a mere 8 millimeters of brain matter at birth.

At two days old, a shunt was placed in Parker's brain, allowing the fluid to drain, releasing the pressure on the brain, allowing the brain matter to expand and develop. Over the next several months, Parker underwent a series of shunt revision and craniofacial surgeries to ensure the proper draining of the excess fluid and to reshape his skull, in order to make room for his brain to hopefully grow to appropriate size and develop properly. Parker began therapy at four weeks old and continues to undergo both physical and occupational therapy to-date. Based on positive annual CT scans (which he calls his "brain scans"), Parker has remained surgery-free since June 6, 2009. He attends a special-needs kindergarten class, where he continues to thrive and demonstrate an inexplicable intellect and remarkable social skills.

Parker is truly a miracle — the child who once was thought may never walk or talk now plays, dances, sings, never stops talking (having never met a stranger) and hopes to one day become a sportscaster. Parker has far exceeded every expectation of his doctors, and now adds being named the 2015 Ace All-Star to his long list of remarkable achievements.

The Ace Foundation, through the generosity of P&G and Duracell, made a $10,000 donation to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Parker's name when he was crowned the 2015 Ace All-Star on January 8, 2015.

At the Ace Hardware Corporate/Ace Foundation office located in Oak Brook, IL, team members get involved with fundraising activities for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in a variety of ways.

Fleece Blanket Club
For the past three years, nearly 50 employees gather in groups or work individually making "no sew" fleece blankets for the patients at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago – the CMN hospital closest to the corporate office. To date, over 400 blankets have been delivered to bring a sense of caring and warmth to kids enduring hospital stays.

Miracle Jeans Weeks
When business casual is the everyday attire, Ace team members get excited to wear jeans for an entire week during the company's five designated Miracle Jeans Weeks each year. With a cost of $1 per day and nearly 900 people on campus, it's no doubt that thousands are raised annually from this one initiative.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Radiothon
Each September, The MIX radio DJs, Eric and Kathy, spend 36 hours at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago sharing stories about patients as well as the good work of the hospital and their dedicated staff. Ace team members are always eager to volunteer at the event by answering phones and taking pledges from callers who are listening in.

As a national company with members in more than 4,200 domestic locations, it's no surprise that members of our own Ace family have experienced the often-devastating effects of a natural disaster. The Ace Hardware Foundation is proud to partner with the American Red Cross to support our neighbors in times of need.

Ready When the Time Comes
Currently, there are 25 Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace team members trained by the Red Cross to handle shelter work in the event of disaster. Their responsibilities range from setting up cots and registering people, to mass feeding and just lending an ear to those who need comfort. Certain disasters, such as fires, floods and blizzards, can happen locally, while others can take place far away, like the earthquake in Haiti. In any of the cases, American Red Cross shelters provide housing and food for thousands of people annually.
