When applied to an outdoor surface, exterior primer penetrates the surface to seal openings that make it vulnerable to the outdoor elements. And while exterior paint on its own can begin to crack and peel on rough surfaces, exterior primer adds a bonding layer helping paint adhere better and last longer.
When selecting an exterior primer, there are typically two types to choose from – oil based primer and latex primer. Oil based primers tend to penetrate porous surfaces more effectively and therefore are often the preferred option for wood exteriors. Latex primers can also be applied to wood surfaces but can interact with the grain leaving behind areas that are slightly warped. Latex primer is better suited for brick, metal and drywall applications.
When priming the exterior of your home, or another structure, laying the best foundation leads to long-lasting results. Visit your neighborhood Ace for exterior paint primer and all of your paint supplies and some helpful advice before getting started.
