Which Handle is Right for Your Axe?

Wood Axe Handles. With a solid construction created with naturally strong and shock-resistant hickory, your new handle won't warp even after extended use in harsh outdoor conditions.

  • Single Bit Handles:Choose single bit handles for axe heads with a single cutting edge.
  • Double Bit Handles:Choose double bit handles for axe heads with two blades. Typically, these axes have a sharp cutting edge on one side with a blunt edge on the other side for maximum force.

Fiberglass Axe Handles.Industrial fiberglass makes the ideal handle for pickaxes, splitting mauls and sledgehammers. This durable yet lightweight material acts as a shock absorber between the metal tool head and handle so you can swing and pound hard surfaces without feeling the harsh reverberations. A molded jacket covering the fiberglass core creates a comfortable grip for extended use.

How to Replace an Axe Handle

As with any big home project, it's crucial to take precautionary safety measures. Wear heavy-duty gloves and eye goggles to protect yourself from any accidental cuts.

If your blade is still attached to the old handle, follow these easy steps:

  • Saw off the hold handle.
  • Use a hammer to apply force and pressure until the small part of the handle falls out of the blade.
  • Clean the eye of the axe with sandpaper to remove all dirt, debris and any excess particles from the old blade.

To insert your new handle into the blade, follow these easy steps:

  • Use the provided wood wedges or apply urethane adhesive to secure your new handle to the blade. Additional epoxy kits are also available to make installation easy.
  • In order to ensure the handle is properly fitted, you'll need to use force. Hit the other edge of the handle with a piece of blunt wood until the blade is pushed in tightly and securely.

Helpful Hint:Add another layer of protection by adding metal wedges into the eye of the axe. Hammer them in diagonally to improve stability and secure the handle even more.

You don't need to replace your favorite axe just because the handle has broken. Simply shop the wide selection of sturdy, reliable and durable replacement handles from Ace Hardware to find the most comfortable option for your grip style. With easy-to-install options that last through many uses, our array of axe handles can handle even the toughest jobs. Find your favorite today.
