Comments about Rutland Refractory Cement (610):
This product is called "Refractory Cement," but it's actually a fiber reinforced 2000 degree fireclay product, at a consistency a little wetter than potter's clay. If you want actual cement, you probably want Rutland's CASTABLE Refractory Cement. Once applied, the instructions are to fire it (it is clay after all) at 500 degrees for an hour AFTER it has dried completely. The Castable mix cement does not need fire curing.
I used the product to repair hundred year old curved fire brick in a coal stove, and it worked wonderfully, except that I fired it at too high a temperature BEFORE it had dried completely. The water that was still in the clay turned to steam and created bubbles like a badly rolled pizza crust will do. Just be careful to get all air pockets out of it, and fire it at under 200 degrees to bake all the water out before full firing at 500.
