My washing machine is broken so I have been doing a lot of "spot" cleaning on soiled areas before taking clothes into the laundry mat (their machines don't get the clothes as clean as mine). This little washboard works great. Sure saves my hands.

This board can be used even on delicate undies, but is also good on very tough stains. Small size is nice for everything except large items. I liked the fact that you can't rack your knuckles like some boards. A delight to use.

Now, why would someone want one of those? Well, for a number of reasons: in case the gas or electricity is out for the washing machine, or if it's broken; to remove grit and stains that require special attention; to wash a few items without having to turn on the big machine; to wash something late at night when you're traveling, or to clean something without waking someone; to celebrate pioneer days; or personal preference. I bought one because I got tired of all the price raises at the laundromat. I've had it for a couple years or so, and I've no complaints. I even like the rhythm of the work.
The washboard itself is made of a single piece of corrugated steel sandwiched into a wooden frame with two legs extending at the bottom to keep the working area clear from the clothes in the sink. On one side the rough ridges are on the top, and on the other side the bottom. The instruction says USE EITHER SIDE ACCORDING TO FABRIC. The rough side is for heavy duty clothes, the smooth side for delicate. The wood on the frame is fitted together with grooves, some finishing nails holding the pieces in place and pounded down below the surface to prevent sharp points sticking up. Seems like solid construction to me, and I have worked in manufacturing in Ohio where these washboards are made.
It looks good enough to fit in with your tools or utensils, but it is not something for display in the living room unless you are looking for that rustic touch. It's small, though, and easily concealed.
It's easy to use. Just rub the fabric across the ridges in soapy water. Then rinse and dry.

I take this product down to the river and wash my family cloths. It works great on shirts, pants and underwear. It is a little heavy but mind carrying it on my back with my 3 kids.
